A majority of Canadians want the country to accept fewer immigrants and temporary residents next year, according to a new Nanos Research survey commissioned by CTV News, as the country continues to grapple with immigration levels and their impact on housing, services and the economy.

The survey found that 52.3 per cent of respondents believe Canada should accept fewer immigrants and temporary residents in 2027, compared with 33.5 per cent who want the numbers to remain about the same.

I already did. But you brushed aside almost everything of what I wrote, and picked only one thing, foreign doctors to write about two instances where a foreign doctor in Canada (i.e. someone who already has gone through our long ass accreditation! so basically you're off topic at this point) didn't treat people right.

Not sure what conversation you want to have at this point. Was it acceptable that those doctors fat shamed? No. Is there a causal link between their behaviour and being Iraqi? You got to actually show that, iraqiness is not a proxy for Shitty Person. Plus, like i said, these were already practicing in Canada, so any issues should be taken up with the accreditation process and the accountability processes of the doctors associations. I really fail to see the connection with immigration policy.

Oh, they were definitely taken to the accreditation authority. As for the connection, it's really quite simple. If that behaviour is considered acceptable where you come from, and you refuse to leave that behaviour behind, you should be left behind. It is apparently common in Iraq and other Arab countries to shame people for being fat (particularly women), so this doctor absolutely saw nothing wrong with insisting her patient (not me, but a relative) agree to gastric bypass surgery or be dropped as a patient. The patient didn't need gastric bypass surgery, and that wasn't what she was there for. If her training in Canada didn't include explanations that that behaviour is not appropriate, that's on the accreditation authority. If it did and she chose to ignore it because that's not how they do it back home, then send her back home.

You are pinning everything on these people's origin. That's a huge logic leap, that I just don't accept as the basis of any kind of conversation. There are people who fat shame in Canada who were born here. Shitty attitudes don't only appear here when imported.

And more generally, you're just off topic! Your story is a credentials and professional ethics issue. A decision about immigration policy does not follow from your anecdote.

Does our immigration policy include educating people on Canadian values? Do those Canadian values include not fat shaming? If not, that's a policy failure.

I'm not saying shitty people don't exist in Canada. In fact you probably right now have the opinion that I am one. I'm saying, and have been saying, it is more common and very normalized in the middle-east, including Iraq. And I'm saying that if we're going to let people like that doctor into Canada, it's on us to make sure they understand that. She's old enough to have graduated from Baghdad University in the 80's, so this is not "you should know better". This is "we should have taught you better". Somebody involved in her ending up in Canada failed.

I get it you have an opinion about people from MENA. I don't have the energy to talk you out of it.

What I'm saying however, what I've been trying to say all along and you keep not getting it, is that what you are saying is still not an argument for picking a number of new immigrants, which is what the poll in your original post is about.
