To be fair, I've only seen it with the two more modern games I have on GOG and neither have multiplayer. All the actually old stuff doesn't need Galaxy for squat. If you're only using GOG for good old games, you may never have encountered it.

Which two? I buy modern games on GOG a lot these past two years.

EDIT: I think this might be a misunderstanding. If you go to your game library and try to download the game, "Download and Install Now" for GOG Galaxy is the first option, and the installer files may be collapsed by default. My understanding from looking through developer docs for GOG is that the DRM-free installer files are created for you automatically, so I don't know how you would make a game require Galaxy.

No; when I try to launch the game from the .exe, it automatically opens Galaxy and only will run through Galaxy. If Galaxy isn't installed, it gives an error saying it needs to be launched through Galaxy. It does this for both Mad Max and Saints Row 4; both were originally installed from the off-line installers downloaded from the website.

I don't have Mad Max in my GOG library, but there are no complaints about DRM in the reviews or on its forums, and usually GOG folks will complain in one or both of those places whenever something's foul, including multiplayer (as they should). It's what got Hitman (2016) pulled from GOG, as while it's technically playable from the start of the story through to the end, it requires online connectivity for its most compelling features beyond that. As for Saints Row IV, I just installed it from the installer executables and launched it with my internet completely disconnected, so if that was a faux pas for that game at one point in time, it has since been corrected. It does require Epic Online Services for multiplayer even though previous versions of the game supported LAN, but I only have Re-Elected in my library. Others, I think, got Re-Elected added to their library if they had the legacy version.

Also, both of those games are stretching the definition of "modern" at over 10 years old.
