It's a great album but I'm gonna be downvoted here for saying this: the screaming in Great Gig in the Sky was so damn awful. The first time hearing the album was an amazing experience that kind of sucks you in to the music but damn, when the screaming started it was like being woken up with a bucket of cold water. It totally ruined that track for me.

All that said Pink Floyd got me to Prog Rock and opened me up to Alan Parsons, Camel, Yes, and so many other great acts. The golden age of that genre was far too short.

Not downvoting you, but you have hurt me πŸ˜…

Great Gig in the Sky has some of the most emotional singing I have heard in any music. And I'm someone who generally doesn't like when singers over-vocalize and show off in songs. It just seems stupid and pointless on run-of-the-mill songs, but in Dark Side of The Moon and this track especially it seems very appropriate to me, someone has literally died and ascended is how I understand the track.

Also this particular performance by Claire Torry is what sells it for me, I've heard live versions where it just doesn't sound so incredibly moving as the album track does.

Of course, it's all down to personal preference.

That's understandable. It gave you an experience you loved and that's ultimately what matters. I just have a thing about wailing voices that hits me like nails to a chalkboard. It's also why I couldn't get into Led Zeppelin even though John Bonham was a master drummer, right up there with the likes of Bruford and Portnoy. Robert Plant's voice just somehow cut through so much of it and takes me out of the experience every time.

    the screaming

She's wordlessly vocalising the entirety of the human condition. From birth to death, from innocence to loss, from love to betrayal, from ecstasy to agony, from profanity to enlightenment. From birth to death. Some of that is bound to suck!
