Like I don't have any particular interest, love or hate for Piker. I haven't ever watched more than a few clips of him. But he does matter, both as a person and a political influencer. And your question is bullshit elitism. Saying "Why does anyone give a shit about [blank]?" and then filling that blank with any type of person you find frivolous, not for the content of their character or their opinions voiced, but for something like their chosen job or hobby, is fucking dumb. Particularly in relation to a politically active person in what is ostensibly a democracy. Everyone matters in a democracy. That is the actual point.

You may as well have said, "Why does anyone give a shit about a janitor?" Well if that janitor has a lot of political influence, good or bad, you should give a shit. What the fuck does it matter if he is a janitor, a twitch streamer, or any other role? If they are talking and people are listening and it is effecting people's political insights and mindset and vote, it doesn't matter what they do for work or how they got their audience. It matters that others are listening. And it also matters that he is the object of political ire from his ideological opponents. No matter how dumb any of it is, these things have real tangible effects on our world. You don't have to pay him any mind or grant his opinions any credence or like him or hate him or feel anything at all about him to acknowledge that he objectively does matter to the political sphere.

A decade ago, people where dismissive of Trump because he was (and is) a fucking caricature of a wealthy womanizing narcissist with a big mouth. "Who gives a shit about some rich real-estate playboy?", one might have asked. But his big mouth runs and millions of voters eat up every word. Do you think Trump's bullshit matters now?

Whenever you are using what someone is "known for' as your criticism, you lose legitimacy to your argument. See, Scott Jennings intentionally tried to make Piker "known for" lynchings. The "known for" something critique is a Trump style attack...." Everybody is talking about how Obama was born in Africa. Sounds like we shouldn't trust that guy.". It's lazy and malicious.

If you want to criticize Piker, do so for demonstrable conduct. All you did instead was signal to me your argument is bs.

So you are using "twitch streamer" as shorthand for "narcissist" then? So stack on a weird prejudice and stereotyping to your elitism. And everything else I said still stands. Even if we granted your prejudice, "since when did narcissism in politics ever effect anyone, right? Who gives a shit about narcissists?" ... 🤨

It is so weird that you are pretending he's just some random nobody, but then seem to get really defensive about his politics and the amount of clout he seems to have with said politics.

Like, you don't have to post here if you don't really care about him. But, the fact that you keep posting seems to imply that you absolutely do care about him. Idk, man, that combined with your stance of how great centrism is, it looks like you want to look nonchalant about him without having to defend why you don't like him (or more likely, his politics.)

I dig Maggoty but yeah, it’s super weird. Extremely Reddit-brained take, like when a beloved rapper or something dies, coming in to say “I don’t know who that is”

Like okay that’s cool, you’re on the internet and can find out easily.

I have no interest in US politics or streamers, but I recognize this is way bigger than “stream guy talk about politic” at this point. Cumfart is being foolish thinking “just a streamer” isn’t a big deal anymore. We’re not far from a president who was a streamer, whether we like it or don’t wanna live on this planet anymore.

I don't care about him personally, but the story is about a bad faith news commentator removing the "he said" nesting from a quote to make it sound like he was claiming precisely the viewpoint that he was criticizing. And that shit shouldn't fly.

Also they're trying to run that story to smear not only him but also a progressive political candidate currently running a tight race. So yeah we should absolutely be calling it out.

Define "celebrity." I certainly would consider many twitch streamers celebrities and public figures, even if I don't care about or watch them. Many of these streams pull more viewers than mainstream media.

Trying to suggest that streamers aren't influential in current year requires you to either live under a rock or be above the age of 60. It's like trying to suggest that YouTubers aren't influential in 2010.

Streamers are influential. Having 40k concurrent viewers is insane, and the actual metrics behind just how insane it is ends up being pretty difficult to parse without having someone else do the analytics for you.

Last time I checked the average time a viewer actually stays in a stream ends up being a few minutes. That also heavily depends on the streamer and what kind of content they produce. Hasan pulling tens of thousands of concurrent viewers is nuts and places him in the upper echelons of the top 1% of streamers on twitch.

It's like trying to say that Assmoldbald isn't influential. You are just wrong, even if you hate having to admit it.

Edit: I should say, I think Hasan is peak dudebro energy and routinely shoves his foot in his mouth. That being said, the man is influential - for better or worse.

Because he's providing real political and moral leadership while the "leadership" internal to the Democratic party are cuckold failures.

Hasan backed candidates have basically wiped the floor throughout both the Democratic primaries and now general elections. As people have recognized the failures of both centrism and bipartisanship, explicitly socialist views expressed through a relatable, non academic, non corporate views have real purchase. Expect them to continue to grow into a household name. You better get comfortable in this new reality.

Which is one reason dear cumfart (this comment can't get removed for using a username right?) is so upset and attempting to deflect from a very important slander lawsuit.

Will be amazing to see Jennings either have to do an apology or see how low he goes to try and get out of it

He actually agrees with you, he's just a twitch streamer who does political commentary and occasional activism when it aligns with his ideology. He would happily stay in his lane. But the democrats and republicans have turned him into a big deal and gone out of their way to slander him.

He's been a political commentator even before he became a streamer. He probably still reacts to content on the account that political commentary largely depends on reacting to interviews, news clips, articles etc. I'm sure he probably does non-political reactions, such as the recent H3H3 implosion, but as with political commentary he adds a lot of commentary ontop the content. There was even a viral clip of casuallyexplained calling out Hasan for constantly pausing videos to add his own commentary.

The idea that he mostly stole content from others is one of the multitude of lies his haters have told over the years. He's a far cry from the react streamers who consume content in its entirety and add only "uh-uh, yeah, right."

He has something like over 20 000 hours streamed. I'm sure you're going to run into that as well, but if that's all you've ever seen... I guess you must be the worlds unluckiest viewer to always find him doing just that.

I mean you can literally open his stream right at this very moment, he's not just sitting there "reacting" like a houseplant. He's not even watching a video others made.

I think a race to the bottom is the only way in the US… shit, anything is better than the opposition they try to throw at the party of evil lawl

I wasn’t saying streamer president immediately, but we’re for sure on track for streamer president by 2040. People love entertainer presidents (I mean…) and “streamer” or “YouTuber” is far more recognized as a parasocial-able figure to latch onto than “traditional media guy” at this point.

Edit: oh! I meant “In CURRENT YEAR we’re not far from a streamer president” rather than “we will have one right now”—I’m sorry for my bad verbiage in my other comment!

I agree with you, but that doesn't change anything. Harris ran a bad campaign and they fucked up running Biden again initially. Everyone soured on them when it was clear Harris was going to continue funding the genocide.

The Democratic party fucked up that election. Now we gotta make sure we hold them to their supposed morals so that they can possibly win moving forward or we elect more progressives who actually listen to their constituents instead of donors.

“Worse” doesn’t mean that Biden didn’t kill a lot of innocent people and children. Also Biden has killed more Palestinians than Trump has. Not sure how he’s been worse.

The problem you’re missing IS that they ran the same campaign… and WHAT happened in between those two elections? What happened, say, early October 2023 and as a result of? I’ll let you figure that one out for yourself.

Harris would have won if she moved left of Biden, woman or not. It was very clear that’s what we needed and it’s very clear they ran away from you (the blue voter) in favor of Trump voters. Why you’d still fall for it years later is beyond me.

Does anyone else remember Tim Walz, governor of my great home state, who is on record saying he loves Isreal btw, told JD Vance in a debate about a “preemptive strike on Iran”? Because I do.

Hell, does anyone even remember during the state of the union Trump said he would invade Iran to “protect its sovereignty a after evil government killed a bajillion protesters” or something dumb like that and fucking ELIZABETH WARREN GAVE HIM A STANDING OVATION?!? because I remember.

People don’t see war and genocide in terms of “bad and worse” because that’s how children think and behave. Genocide is bad and genocidal democrats don’t deserve power because you think they’re a little bit better than the genocidal republicans.

Your view was the standard view in 2024/25, from corporate sources, and I think much of the population simply accepted that view, especially among liberals.

But you've lost. And no one believes you or your sources in corporate media. Its clear that your ideology is bankrupt, so people have abandoned you.

The hollowness and emptiness of your perspective is exactly why Hasan is ascendant, and you and your twins in corporate media are descendant.

The only reason what Hasan said about 9/11 could be considered stupid is because it doesn't paint the full picture. Much like the term 'defund the police' doesn't mean 'completely eradicate police departments across the U.S.', saying 'America deserved 9/11' does not mean 'all the innocent (powerless) people killed in the attack or as a result of the attack deserved it'.

You can accuse him of being tactless, because he is - for someone with a degree in polysci and communications you'd think he'd conjure up a better way to phrase it. Thing is, he's not wrong.
