the game is simplistic and unfinished, but it provided a perfect breeding ground for modders to clean up the unfinished content and populate the universe with creatures and places.

It has a controversial development anyway, from what I remember most of the game art was made by interns who were promised payment and positions and got neither

@Aielman15@lemmy.world I didn't follow the game when it went from beta to 1.0, but having played the beta later (builds are still downloadable on Steam if you know the right IDs to point to Valve's SteamCMD), I can understand the complaints. The game felt to me more adventure-focused previously, but then it shifted into a more general exploration/sandbox game, expanding but simplifying several aspects and ditching a lot of the plot in the process.

Also the developers never officially said the updates were over, and 1.4.x feels like it tries to bring back a bit of that adventure loop. But after 1.0, updates slowed until the game felt abandoned. And at least up to some 3 years ago iirc, the developers would say on the official Discord groups that they were waiting for news on a supposed console release before resuming updates to the PC versions, to make feature parity easier.

However, at least in my opinion, it's still a decent game well worth the time and money spent, and it does feel like a complete game. I'd recommend it, specially with how cheap it goes on sales. And if you want to check out older builds if you get it on Steam, feel free to check this tutorial (amusingly and unironically using Starbound as the example). GOG version iirc is only available from 1.0 onward.

Lastly, there's a community for it here on the fediverse if you'd wish to follow: !starbound@lemmy.ml

I keep hearing of Starbound but public opinion on the game seems to be divided. I've heard the game in beta/early access was better that it is now?

I wasn't particularly interested tbh, so I didn't dig deeper, but this OST slaps and the name's cool, so it piqued my curiosity lol

    How's the game?

Anton is such an incredible developer and human being. He's been so incredibly dedicated and focused on his vision for the game, while also being so open, transparent, and communicative about its development process. And, of course, he's so good at embracing the sillier side of things without it ever feeling fake or forced.

I only learned of the game just last year, but seeing videos on it was the last push I needed to commit to getting a VR headset, and it has captured, by far, the vast majority of my total VR playtime.

    Wonderful.

Seeing clips of that $20 game got me to buy a Vive kit to try out VR. Then I built a second PC just for VR gaming. Upgraded to the Index controllers and headset when they were released. So far I have 753 hours in H3VR and it's still fantastic. Will definitely check out the second one whenever that comes out but my heart will probably always belong to the original.

Alexander Brandon is probably my most listened to artist. I've listened to the Unreal Tournament soundtrack, in full, about once every 1-2 weeks at work, for almost 8 years now.

Xbox emulation is much better than it was but there's still only a small percentage of the library that's perfectly playable.

Luckily JSRF is one of the few lucky titles that works without issue.

I played the shit out of JSRF on Xbox. I remember before the game even released listening obsessively to Fly Like A Butterfly on my Rio One mp3 player that I found on some shit like napster or audiogalaxy or kazaa, after I heard that BANGER of a track in a launch trailer.

Definitely worth trying to emulate! I think I got it to work a year or two ago, prolly still have the iso and bios files somewhere.

But I also highly recommend checking out Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, a much more recent spiritual successor. It's a dogdamn masterpiece and Hideki Naganuma has a few tracks in it too!
