dont forget to tell it not to make any mistakes
Linus has the reputation of fiercely criticizing and rejecting sub standard code submitted by others, but i wouldn't expect him to be able to impartially evaluate his own product.
Let's hope greg kh and the rest of them aren't afraid to call him out if he deserves it
Yep, I'd hope for good new projects where their founding principles are about being against these things. Some people say if you dont like feature X then compile your own distro, which I dont think is a realistic solution for everyone.
Ive always kept an offline copy of anything I cared about, if anything asks for my ID in the future I am definitely doing without or finding an alternative, mass noncompliance is important.
In this scenario I would hope the community takes development and distribution "underground", but even if such a solution existed it would probably no longer be interoperable with the rest of the worlds locked down garbage.
Linus is the tech bro here https://lore.kernel.org/linux-media/CAHk-=wi4zC+Ze8e+p3tMv8TtG_80KzsZ1syL9anBtmEh5Z40vg@mail.gmail.com/
The BSD's seems a pretty solid option.
if you wanna avoid LLMs then leave
how very tech bro of you
i bet quite a lot of people would leave if it were an option. in fact, isn't that why most of us are here on the Fediverse
Kinda, but not really. It is possible that eventually the slop will take over many great distros and projects, but the anti- or even sane-AI folk will just do their own new projects.
Age limits don't seem like a reall risk with open-source projects, but I have already decided that I will not partake if it goes to that.. I won't post my ID to be able to see memes, I'll just let go. I got my offline games, old consoles, DVDs, books, board games etc.
// Edited for grammar
(openbsd fits in your head if you try hard enough)
not anymore, i have begun reading the openbsd man pages. a schizophrenic man told me to do it fifteen years ago, which puts it at right about the correct time for me to listen to him
I just worry about the future in general
There's bigger things to worry about atm, so no, not really.
The biggest worry I see is laws appearing all over the world that demand ID verification, surveillance features or encryption backdoors that Linux developers and distributors aren't in a position to comply with. If it becomes a legal liability to oversee or contribute to a Linux distro, only those with the deepest pockets to pay lawyers will dare do so, and there will be intense pressure to corporatize its distribution. They won't be able to undo open-source licenses for existing code, but if using or distributing that code still gets you sued it could be a problem for all independent actors.
Okay, I'll leave linux then.
I don't think he's arguing. He doesn't 'want it badly', he has it, the kernel has it, it's not going away.
He couldn't really be much clearer: If you have an issue with it then leave, or do the open source thing and fork the kernel instead of:
"But the solution is not to put your head in the sand and sing "La La La, I can't hear you" at the top of your voice like some people seem to do."
I think most of those issues were overblown. I don’t really want to argue them here, but I do not lose sleep over those issues, as the headlines on them were sensationalized.
I am worried about legal/compliance complications, especially as Linux gets more mainstream and the world leans more “tech bro authoritarian.” Linux is definitely on a path of colliding with corporate interests, which is a dangerous place to be.
Linux is fine.
If you wanna avoid LLM's all up in your kernel then leave, Linus has put his foot down on this months back and the kernel is knee deep in llm's, and powering much of the ecosystem.
If operating systems need verification the linux ecosystem seems well placed to avoid this with LFS, Gentoo, Toybox and many more being kits to build your own.
If Linux does get drowned in twats and turns into some kinda IBM powered Steam machine then the BSD's are waiting.
Linus Torvalds arguing he should be able to let LLMs contribute to the Linux kernal has me worried. I left Microslop because of their slop machines, if Linus wants them that badly I'll have to leave linux too
Pull requests welcome
Nope
I installed Linux on a 2016 iMac Retina 5K 27-inch with the following specs (copy/pasted from the 2016 order email):
- 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
- 8GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - two 4GB
- 1TB Fusion Drive
- AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory
I upgraded the RAM to 24 GB back in 2016.
My daughter uses it to play Minecraft and some lightweight games on Steam and it doesn't break a sweat. I installed Ubuntu 24.04 and it had no trouble finding drivers for everything.
Mint works fine on a 2014 Surface Pro 3 with 4gb of memory and a core i3. I’m sure any distro will work fine on what you’re looking at.
Sigh....
Well then Whonix is what you want, it does guarantee that (without a VM sandbox escape) the workstation cannot access clearnet
Sorry for the late reply. But for the record I must say Tails does not do what I want because Tails gives clearnet access. The UI discourages it, but the possibility is there to open a browser on clearnet.
You may be right about Whonix.. I have yet to tinker with it.
