It was the deal breaker for me. The end of my 21 year relationship with steam. I don't give a shit that they've let me through because of the account age, the fact that they locked it down briefly and may do so again in the future means they can fuck right off

I think I may have been cleared because I sent them the precursor to a consumer protections complaint because they wouldn't refund a glitchy game. The account is not that old.

Finally, this entire situation has manifested because housing has been permitted to be treated as optional.

housing has been permitted to be treated as a speculative investment asset. FTFY.

In general I agree with your post, but would add: No corporations (including trusts etc. which are mostly tax dodges these days, clean up and formalize the valid use cases and then outlaw the rest) should be allowed to own in the residential housing market, real people only. Same for foreign ownership. Increasingly penalize via taxation (the more properties you own, the more you pay) owning more than a principal residence. We need some (cheap, 25% of income as you say) rental properties for people starting out, moving around etc., but the investment side of ownership has gotten way out of hand. It's a worldwide (western) issue precipitated by neoliberalism (aka rampant greed), but it can be addressed locally, and with the property market topping out at the moment (apparently, the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent), it's a good time to start.

Hot take. It shouldn't matter if your account is old, and it's a good thing that people get frustrated by it, because it shouldn't be a thing and public unpopularity is the only way to make it not a thing. Don't be content with a bad thing just because you're exempt.

Yet again, Australia is the testing ground for anti-privacy authoritarian legislation.

The reply I got when I whinged at them about a similar complaint was:

I understand your concern with this. For now, verification based on credit card ownership is the only path Steam currently offers for age verification under the Age-Restricted Material Online Safety Codes.

We are continuing to gather data on potential pain points for users and will take your feedback back to the team. We are sorry for the inconvenience this requirement is causing for you.

‘Affordable Housing’ should not be a legitimate category. The first 100% of demand for primary residence should be explicitly affordable, with a maximum of 25% of whatever the pension currently is, available to anyone. The current housing market should exclusively be a premium category, available to those who want to choose, and pay for, more.

Charities should only be responsible for temporary issues that arise, their primary goal should be to put themselves out of ‘business’. Charities should absolutely not be responsible for provisioning the perpetual needs of a society, especially core elements of subsistence. Further, no one should ever be expected to engage with a church unless they are legitimately able to choose not to.

Finally, this entire situation has manifested because housing has been permitted to be treated as optional. Luck and camping equipment are structurally loaded bearing elements of local, state, and federal housing policies, and they need to be excised before anything can be meaningfully corrected.

Another proposal is to increase the population of ethical landlords, and by ethical I mean former. Currently the only way to this can happen is by them explicitly selling the properties they’re scalping and hoarding. An alternative could be a mechanism where renting can explicitly contribute to the tenant ownership or other accumulation of equity.
