Weirdly I've heard that this is sometimes tied to tbe IPD lock, and some folks have had success in booting it back up after unlocking it. I don't have mine just yet thanks to a shipping delay so I can't exactly confirm or deny, but I've heard that floating around. Trying to mentally prep for any potential RMAs myself 👁️👄👁️

Stock is definitely dwindling but also as the initial hype dies down, so does a site relying completely on user-submitted data. Mine should be coming in today and I totally forgot this site even existed. It's just not a reliable source of info.

Luckily it usually filters itself out after a few days, but still, it really needs to be stricter. The disclaimer being optional and hardly enforced sucks because even if valve were to lock down these events more to exclude anything with the disclaimer, these "devs" would just avoid putting it up at all anyway.

It's legitimately no different than cryptocurrency and NFTs, but this is the techbro scam that finally stuck after flinging shit against the wall over and over.

The training data sources are built destructively, without any consent from the artists, writers, programmers, anyone whose data is pulled into these models. The information these things spit out usually has so many inaccuracies - search engines are fucked, software is built without understanding a damn thing it actually does, poor translations of documentation are made public, the list goes on.

On top of that, data centers are one of the biggest environmental nightmares we've ever seen. Why are we pushing these so hard in the middle of a goddamn climate crisis?

There's genuinely not a single thing it actually does well, and the only reason it genuinely took off is because investors in the same 5 companies are patting each other on the back.

It's also worth mentioning how chatbots built off this stuff are designed to always be extraordinarily friendly and confirming to the user. It's such a massive factor contributing to AI psychosis, to the point that there people who legitimately believe these lines of code are sentient and conscious. Meanwhile we've already seen just how easily these closed source models can be tweaked to spit out pure propaganda, making them an extremely valuable political tool - it's no wonder fascists love this shit so much.

I didn't even think of that but honestly yeah that's kind of insane LMAO

Like I have no problem with appimages for smaller tools, and at least things like Shelly make maintaining them much easier nowadays, but for something like this, what the fuck

I get that AI companies sucking up all the hardware has slowed things down elsewhere, but this legitimately just feels like a major fuckup on Valve's part. Honestly ridiculous. It feels like they dramatically underestimated the demand for all 3 of these hardware releases this year.

I'm legitimately considering just getting one from a scalper at this point. I know that's a practice that shouldn't be supported at all and is a huge part of the problem, but pushing back to December at the earliest is ridiculous.

It just seemed like the most similar choice that meets my needs. I looked at some of the other options - I'd go with Proton if it weren't for the issues mentioned, I used them for a bit and the service works very well. Nym seemed interesting, but I don't believe they offer Wireguard configs? I could be wrong.

Over the past year I've been minimizing Google in my life to the point where I could nearly delete my account for good, but I've got two decent roadblocks still - their android calling app, and Google Fi.

The former feels like the only one that actually filters out spam somewhat effectively and transcribes voicemails to text, both key features. The default GrapheneOS phone app didn't seem to compare last I tried.

The bigger hurdle is Google Fi. Frankly in the Northeast US they feel like the only actually affordable carrier, comparable plans at the other big names are practically double the cost or more. I've looked into some smaller carriers, but every single one seems to have some controversy or other dogshit dealbreaker.

Any recommendations for these last two things? It'd be huge to finally break off these last couple things. I don't think I could get to the point where I could totally delete my account (mostly because of a few game logins lmao), but at least I could cut off everything that actually matters.

Full disclosure, I'm pretty new to selfhosting myself, and I haven't written a guide like this before, but hopefully this scatterbrained writeup is enough for someone out there lmao

This is just what works for me and how I set it up. Always open to ideas for improvement as well.
