Thanks for being grounded about this.

Even Bernie & AOC underfunded the Florida races over Michigan yet they don't want to look at that

Democrats and aligned donors were shooting blindly towards the end and places like Mississippi got late funding that responded well.

  • Frank Furedi on the Case for Populism (www.persuasion.community)

Yascha Mounk sits down with sociologist Frank Furedi (In Defense of Populism) on The Good Fight to debate whether modern populism represents a legitimate democratic correction against technocratic elites or an existential threat to liberal democratic norms.

It’s a compelling discussion on populism and its place within the liberal democratic order. Towards the end, Furedi makes a notable point on how the classical concept of tolerance has shifted:

What I really worry about at the moment, and I go back to tolerance all the time because I think tolerance is the key issue of our time, is that people in government have invented expressions that are fundamentally hostile to the ideal of tolerance. Take, for example, the expression that people in the British government use: “zero tolerance.” They think the idea of zero tolerance is a really positive goal to achieve. They do not realize that if you get rid of tolerance, because that is what they are really getting at, even though they have a more interesting way of expressing it, you give tolerance itself a negative connotation. So many people I talk to, instead of upholding Pierre Bayle’s and John Locke’s liberal ideas of tolerance as a wonderful achievement in a world where people used to kill each other if they had different views, regard it as something that can be swept aside by the people who are meant to be liberal.

I think explaining all the Lord of The Ring stuff is going to be another weirder piece. Can we jointly add overuse of Bottle Water & Golf Courses to this pushback of useless water excesses?

According to market research firm Mordor Intelligence, nearly 1 trillion liters of water were consumed by AI data centers in 2025. That amounts to roughly 264 billion gallons for the year , or the annual water usage of 1.8 million Americans. AI data centers are currently consuming 550 million gallons of water per day. That's roughly the same rate of water consumption as the entirety of the world's bottled water industry .

Sharing this primarily for the insight it offers into how career national security officials and policy insiders think through these issues.

In this episode, former Biden administration national security officials Jake Sullivan and Jon Finer interview China specialists Jessica Chen Weiss and Julian Gewirtz regarding the Trump–Xi summit, Taiwan deterrence, and bilateral AI safety risks.

Setting aside whether one agrees with their specific policy conclusions or the institutional assumptions of the Washington professionals, it serves as a valuable primary-source look into how senior figures analyze strategic competition, structural trade-offs, and where DC consensus on China is currently holding or fracturing. Worth a listen as an informative window into the mechanics of high-level foreign policy discourse.

Isn't the issue with Hasan Piker really about his association with some political candidates rather than his right to say those things? It comes down to opponents tying candidates to his rhetoric in guilt-by-association campaign ads, which outside groups can flood the airwaves with thanks to the atrocious Supreme Court rulings that protects unlimited campaign spending as free speech.

The Macklemore issue is more in the traditional Free speech realm. The more interesting angle there is how many of those mega-venues were funded through public-private partnerships. If taxpayers foot the bill for the construction and infrastructure, it raises the question of whether private operators should still have unilateral power to shut out artists over political speech.

You may have saw the middle example and thought hey there is a band that broke the South Africa Boycott over Apartheid and played there anyway.

In a pre-concert (Live Aid) interview, (Freddie) Mercury stated: "The point of this concert is to wake people up to starvation and famine... We shouldn't be looking in terms of us and them. It should be all of us. I think when people are starving, ** we are all humans, and we should be looked upon as such.** "
