Hi I'm new to this debate and I agree with you that language matters and all that stuff you said at the end. That being said, I'm firmly in the camp of "LLMs are bad, but a 'true' AI would be even worse for us". I could type up several paragraphs diving into the several reasons why I think that way, but to save time (and to get back to my job) I'm just going to steal this Frank Herbert quote:

Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them

Do I think AI, in a vacuum, is always bad and will be no matter who or what makes it? No, not necessarily. But whatever we build will be inherently, and intrinsically tied to the micro- and macro-systems of our society, which are all DEEPLY fucked. Consequently, any AI we bring in would also, even if not initially, end up as being equally, deeply, fucked and end up being far, FAR more detrimental than positive

Who controls the British crown? Who keeps the metric system down? We do, we do!

Who leaves Atlantis off the maps? Who keeps the Martians under wraps? We do, we do!

Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star? We do, we do!

Who robs cave-fish of their sight? Who rigs every Oscar night? We do! Weeee doooooooooo!

My most recent song was "Blade Runner Blues" by Vangelis (from the OG Blade Runner film) to fall asleep to. My most recent FIRE song was "Murdertrain a Comin'" by Metalocalypse/Dethklok, the adult swim comedy show from like 20 years ago where a death metal band was popular enough to be the world's 4th largest economy. They put out like, half a dozen full-length albums, each song equally over-the-top yet still good enough that if you listened to it out of context it would just sound like any other song from the genre

Actually I believe the first recorded, archeological proof of an aqueduct goes back to Assyria, and then at some point the Romans copied the design and put them everywhere, all of this being LONG before Islam was even a thing. History is full of similar instances where the person/entity who famously used X was NOT the inventor, and instead stole it from someone else first

1-The justice system works off of proof and evidence, not conjecture or presumption, no matter how likely the odds are (ideally speaking that is, different rules may apply depending on your race)

2-Since the President is also in charge of the DOJ, he has the power to tell them to just drop the issue. Now, a super-majority in Congress can bypass that, but currently that just ain't gonna happen

3-Like someone else pointed out, this headline was not written with people like you and me in mind, but rather people who were/are still hesitant to believe what the rest of us know to be true until they have literally no other option, and even then a large number of them will probably just go full-on into denial mode because they can't handle the idea that they were so wrong about something for so long

I remember when I was growing up (decades ago), my dad instilled in me to never put a magnet up to a computer or TV because they would cause irreparable damage to the screen. While I'm sure that SOMEWHERE out in the world there's a magnet strong enough to cause damage if given enough time or whatever, but in terms of what I can buy from a store, would it be safe to keep my cell phone and a magnet (say, one of those 'clicking' fidget toys with half a dozen or so small magnets) in the same pocket, or am I just asking for trouble?

Edit: Thank you everyone for all your answers! I now know far more than I expected to from this silly question 😁

As an American who grew up at a religious school in the 90s, we absolutely did not (or at least I never had access to one). Obviously places like Kora or Tibet have been effected in their history (I still want to read your answers 😁), but what about, for example, New Zealand? Or Sierra Leonne? Or Portugal? I'm just curious to see how pervasive the new Global Language already is by this point.

BonusQuestion: Is it mostly following their Belt-and-Road Initiative? Wouldn't that be something?
