FWIW the quality of Apple’s software in the last decade has fallen off a cliff while flagship open source projects have realised the need for dedicated UX teams. IMO they’re all a bit janky now but while proprietary software is getting worse, OSS is getting better
This is reminding me of hikes in property prices. Soon, older people are gonna say shit like
- I paid that much for 32 megabytes 25 years ago
- Why do you need so much RAM? Just use fewer programs
- If you didn’t spend so much money on Steam and Netflix you’d be able to afford it
This reminds me of the work being done on grid and distributed computing up to the mid-2000s.
The idea is that your computer does your work but it can also do the work of others, assuming the work can be divided up into small chunks.
And it’s not limited to processing tasks! There are grid computer implementations that distribute storage across fleets of machines to improve redundancy, reduce the need for centralised file servers, etc.
But it was always intended to be implemented at the organisation level (work, school, uni). At home you’d be unlikely to need it, but you could always opt in.
I think the main survivors from this era are distributed computing programs (Folding@Home, crypto mining malware, etc.)
Was this how the Butlerian Jihad started?
So TDF has a fascinating article on their blog discussing how the Austrian military made the switch. It took a lot of planning and there was a huge amount of work to help move people along.
I suspect this may not have been the case here. But I’m sure we’ll find out the gory details soon enough
I donated blood for the first time today! I don’t think I’ll need dinner after all the party pies I ate.
I believe I donate a few bucks on some regular interval. Keen to keep the site going let us know how when the decision has been made
Probably worth mentioning that many of the countries with 20 days paid vacation have 20 business days of paid vacation, which in practice works out to four weeks. Countries that have a multiple of seven are probably going by calendar day which is essentially the same.
Any word on whether it’ll actually write ODF, even if not as default? IIRC OnlyOffice doesn’t write ODF
KDE is the only remaining “heavyweight” desktop environment that treats its users like adults
Did he shit himself?
How’s this project going to interact with Collibre Collabora (sorry!)?
