i mean, it's better than literally nothing, right?

i'd like it if developers had access to a tool that makes it impossible for AI to decompile our programs, or if any government ever made legislation about AI so we could sue when someone else uses Ai to copy our IP, or if it was at all feasible for the average indie gamedev to afford a lawyer.

but none of that is the case right now, so all that indie devs can hope for at the moment is that the creators of other models follow Antrhopic's lead here, or that they get sued into doing something like this.

note: i'm biased since i got my degree in gamedev earlier this year, and i personally dislike AI. i hope my perspective is still useful, though.

and if there's a better solution, i'd genuinely like to hear it

i appreciate the optimism, and yes! original stuff is always better! but sadly it's possible for consumers to either not care or simply not know if something was made/copied with AI.

let's say, hypothetically, i make a free public demo for a game called "Glass Quest". whoops, suddenly 5 evil devs have each made 20 clones of my game, and consumers don't know if "Glass Adventure" is the original game, or if it's "Glass Quests", or maybe "Prism Quest"?

not every clone is perfect, but some are good enough to take wishlists and engagement away from the original demo.

then, somehow i make it through that, and put the full version on Steam for £10. a reasonable price, but not free. so if someone threw my game into Claude and uploaded it to Roblox, then a lot of people would play that instead just because they wouldn't have to pay, or perhaps without ever knowing that the original Glass Quest was a Steam game.

this is only barely exaggerated, too. see: https://youtu.be/9PbVrrNKKwU

i know people have been making free versions of paid games for a very long time, but not to this scale. and those were often labours of love, not... this.

so again. i'm glad something is being done to address it.

    ah. yeah that's real

honestly i haven't been doing the best either, but i think having the daily pixelart as a small and simple obligation helps with that

especially during the months where i've used it like a diary, theming each drawing around something about that day, good or bad

maybe you could start with something like that?

i know we've had our fun putting middle fingers up towards Adobe and the like, but these kinds of restrictions are needed to protect developers who aren't insanely wealthy.

from the article, which i'm sure you all read:

And yet there are situations that merit some discussion, like the recent controversy about the Steam Next Fest being chock-full of AI slop copied from existing titles. That particular situation is getting particularly nasty, as game developers are reportedly being extorted under threat that their game demos will be cloned into complete games before they have a chance to finish and release the original.

Adding insult to injury, this is seemingly being done to small studios whose main priority is usually "having food," rather than big publishers looking to microtransaction everything into a new yacht for shareholders.

    thanks!!

and i'd encourage you to try pixelart yourself; you don't need any fancy tools to get going. in fact, i started with just MS Paint, although obviously nowadays i mainly use... uh... MS Paint... plus GIMP for scaling and transparency sometimes (i'll cave and learn aseprite eventually, but today is not that day)

transcript and drawing themesa grid of 31 pixelart drawings with the header "October 2026". in the top left, there is a colour pallete, faint text reading "Miner_Fabs", and a pixelart version of the Inktober logo.

themes and description of each drawing:

    1. Apple - closeup of a bottle labeled "Inktober" with a drawing of an evil apple on it, next to a bottle of poison.

    2. Relic - an ominous necklace floating, unclasped. magical particles eminate from the chain and the bottom of the necklace's gemstone, forming a faint grin.

    3. Miniature - shelves stocked with Jerry figurines on sale (reference to Lego Master Builder Alec's Mini-Jerry prank). two of the figurines are ballet dancing while an instructor watches

    4. Cactus - a sad cactus with an exposed brain.

    5. Smack - a wizard with a staff beholding a large hand monument near the ocean. the monument vaguely says "SLAP" on the tips of the fingers. the night sky has circular patterns.

    6. Ogre - a judgy ogre in a suit and bowtie.

    7. Panic - a bloodied office with an alarm going off and a monitor that says "RUN". someone looks through a window from outside, shocked.

    8. Stinky - smelly durian next to a dead person on the floor of the same office. a plant on the table is dead.

    9. Ram - a HAL-1000 like computer with a display asking for ram. a human hand feeds some ram into a slot.

    10. Mystical - a woman with her regular eyes closed and a third eye on her forehead, summoning many symbols. her hands glow dimly.

    11. Rescue - a diagram of John Edward Jones stuck in Nutty Putty cave saying "help...". a magnet on a rope is attracted to one of his feet.

    12. Toss - a robed hand tossing a diamond into a rubbish bin of diamonds.

    13. Flimsy - a sad girl made of cardboard tubes and boxes. her right hand has fallen off.

    14. Lady - a lady in a fancy red dress holding wine and a handbag, and wearing the necklace from the second drawing. the bottles from the first drawing are on a table.

    15. Hooray - the front of a black greeting card that says "it's time. Hooray!". the text is in the shape of a weird green face, smiling creepily.

    16. Gangly - a barely visible gangly figure in a forest, glaring. it has the green face from the last drawing.

    17. Contraption - a bunch of simple mechanical patterns.

    18. Flightless - a penguin on an iceberg looking up at the moon.

    19. Confused - me curiously looking at The Orb of Confusion (reference to a Spongebob episode).

    20. Lounge - the employee lounge from The Stanley Parable. the yellow Adventure line is sprawled all over the walls and blinds.

    21. Hero - Miles Morales swinging in his Spider-Man suit next to a building in a city at night.

    22. Beacon - a Minecraft landscape at night. a level 4 Beacon lights up trees nearby, and a path connects it to a Nether portal and a house.

    23. Dapper - Minecraft YouTuber TrapperDapper reaching for the Dragon Egg on the End exit portal. BlackYoshiX creeps from the shadows with a sword, ready to strike.

    24. Bake - a black bird peeking it's head out of a pie on a counter next to a window.

    25. Fracture - two people in red berets standing in front of a painting split in two (vaguely referencing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33).

    26. Zip - a zip file named "virus.zip" surrounded by other files. the zipper is open; the file has a small green creature inside.

    27. Dumb - a child with a propeller hat and a lollipop saying "hi dogy" in front of an Eyeless Dog from Lethal Company.

    28. Trophy - a trophy with a face styled after the Monstrosites from Minecraft Dungeons on a pedastal. Minecraft souls float in the background.

    29. Tusk - a closeup of a creature's face in darkness. it has a long eye, a nostril, crooked teeth and a very large tusk.

    30. Cookie - the cookie from Cookie Clicker spewing out cookies above a ruined city. the Statue of Liberty is knocked over in the background. the foreground is full of cookies.

    31. Flex - a very buff woman with glasses and four huge arms flexing in a gym.

hi! since late february this year, i've been making a small pixelart drawing (nearly) every day as practice, so for this month's daily drawings, i did inktober!!

i kept most of the drawings dark since, yknow. ink is black. and i experimented with making a more dynamic colour pallete than usual. it's not entirely perfect, since some colours saw very little use, yellow could've used darker shades, and it's overall a little similar to the pallete i made for september, but i think i'm getting the hang of choosing good colours for these.

i also tried to make each drawing somewhat spooky while sticking to the official prompts (which i got from here); definitely easier on some days than others, but still, real happy with how most of them turned out.

i hope you like these :) later this week/month/decade i might post some of the drawings i did in prior months, or just hand pick a few good ones (some are lame, i can't lie)

a grid of 31 pixelart drawings. see post body for full transcript!

67 came from a song lyric, then a kid made a tiktok where he frantically said "six seveeen!! six seveeen!!" to the camera while doing a gesture with his hands. and because kids love pattern recognition, when they see the number it's easy to point it out and do the gesture. and so the meme spread.

the humor comes from it being nonsensical; the joke is on anyone who's either tired of it, or never found it funny at all, so i don't really see it going away anytime soon.

i don't get why that other user is being such a lemmy ahh replier. i don't really use "ahh", but here's my working definitions.

"ahh" is slang that means "ass", but as far as i know, it's usage is restricted to when you would say "lookin", or when referring to yourself.

so "goofy lookin' shoes", "goofy ass shoes", and "goofy ahh shoes" all mean the same thing. this use doesn't work for positive contexts, though; "sweet ahh car" is improper.

also, "my hungry ass when i see burger", and "my hungry ahh when i see burger" mean the same thing.

a "lemmy ahh thread" thus means "a thread that is negatively stereotypical of lemmy".

    i hope this helps :)

It's sad to see someone who seems to want to do the right thing this bad fall victim to some kind of savior complex where they completely fail to empathize with the people they want to save.

if i understood his long, rambly posts about it, he might have wanted to save the fediverse, but he didn't do it for us.

he did it for the "normies" who would otherwise be filtered out by "malcontents" and toxic content; for those used to (relatively) comfier social media platforms.

i think fundamentally, though, it's better for fewer newbies to engage with the fediverse (and for some to turn back) than to have the masses use this place the same as any other social media, with a curated feed where nothing too wrong or uncomfortable ever pops up. i don't think we really want that audience, anyway.

i wonder if things would be different if he started with that attitude.

something i think people miss in the replies here is that Minecraft is largely a sandbox game.

when it comes to worldgen, some features are meant to serve as setpeices to build around and explore; large lush caves and the newer mountains are great backdrops to build in, and structures like ancient cities are awesome to find and loot.

other features, however, are meant to inspire players to change them in their own way. the most obvious example of this are villages; some players sprawl them out into bustling towns, others shove the lot of 'em into a large trading hall, and some just make their own house to move in.

there are even secret villager types in biomes that don't have them (jungle + swamp) to encourage players to set up their own.

villages would be less effective, though, if they were already beautiful metropolises that players didn't ever have to change. the most Mojang ever did towards this were the changes in 1.14; even then, they were careful not to overdo it.

so sure, there are a ton of ways Mojang could make sulfur springs better past this. they could sprawl them out more, have a custom structure nearby using the new blocks, make the springs have richer colours...

... or maybe you should go out, find one, and build what you want to see.

i think a lot of it comes down to how much easier it is to drop Harry Potter than entire social platforms and such.

for example, it'll take time and energy for me to move from Windows to Linux, which i simply don't have right now. but all i need to do to stick it to Rowling is not care about Harry Potter.

now, that doesn't mean i would go out of my way to harass people who still support the franchise, but i could see how that would embolden other people to do so, and i still think it's important to let people know that J.K. Rowling actively advocates against trans people existing.

    complete tangent about Minecraft

i may get flak for this, but Minecraft is completely disconnected from Notch nowadays - he's still riding his fortune from when he was involved, sure, however i'm fairly certain he hasn't seen a penny since he sold it off, in contrast to Rowling who still gets a cut. correct me if i'm wrong on that.

i get being put off by it entirely because of Microsoft, that's valid. Mojang largely works independently of them though afaik, and Mojang seems fairly supportive if anything - they've hired at least two LGBTQ+ folk that i know of, Lena Raine (Celeste's composer) and Sarah Boeving (who i only knew was queer via the on-screen pronouns in Minecraft Live 2023). on top of that, they removed some splash texts referencing Notch in 2019 after he made "controvesial (i.e. transphobic) statements on Twitter" (source).

looking at the wiki, these splash texts were also added in 2020:

    • Black lives matter!
    • Be anti-racist!
    • Learn about allyship!
    • Speak OUT against injustice and UP for equality!
    • Amplify and listen to BIPOC voices!
    • Educate your friends on anti-racism!
    • Support the BIPOC community and creators!
    • Stand up for equality in your community!

as well as these ones in 2022:

    • You are valid!
    • I'm glad you're here!
    • You are welcome here!
    • Your gender is valid!
    • Contains infinite genders!

and while i know this isn't the biggest show of support Mojang could do (e.g. un-region locking the progress pride cape), it does help solidify in my mind that i'm not supporting bigots by playing a game i purchased over a decade ago.

... ok, other than the Microsoft account i had to make for it, you have me there.

to preface: i cannot make food to save my life (i need to learn, i know). i have no idea if anything edible can be made from the provided ingredients.

this partly exists as a reminder to everyone complaining under FauxPseudo's last challenge post that you, too, can make posts here; it is not meant to be a slight against FauxPseudo, who's just trying to provide fun content for the community.

you are on the set of The Great British Bake Off, and have access to every appliance and utensil there. you're here to cook.

the time limit is 4 hours. after that, you must present what you have made to judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson, who will make fun of you if it's bad. (not actually. but pretend you had 4 hours to prepare this meal, and that i could afford the judges.)

    your ingredients are:

    • a dozen bagels
    • 10 bars of dark chocolate
    • 17 chilli peppers
    • 15 mini babybel cheese snacks
    • 8 egg yolks
    • 3 boxes of pancake mix
    • a bag of tuna floss
    • a jug of milk
    • a bottle of rapeseed oil
    • a large block of pink salt
    • one strawberry.

all listed ingredients must be used to some degree, and you can't add any more. you're allowed to have leftovers as long as everything's used once.

i haven't provided exact measurements (partly because i'm writing this to procrastinate university work and don't have time for that) so please assume reasonable quantities for each.

    what would you make?

    [–] 5 points 9 months ago

i tend to only comment when i feel like i have something to add, and i only post after putting in far too much effort into perfecting what i made.

i have ideas for shitposts down in writing. the first thing i posted was sort of shitposty, even. with the time it takes for me specifically to make a shitpost though, i figure i might as well create something more meaningful.

and i hope that adds more value to the fediverse than if i posted as often as i could. some folks are better at that than i'll ever be, anyways.

Transcription (Poem Only)Words of Whimsy 0 - Testing, Testing

    -

    This is a test

    first and foremost

The exact words will be important later

    once everything seems correct.

    -

I wanted to start with a higher quality product

    trust me

my inner perfectionist still demands it

but to make the first real one perfect,

a simple test like this is all but necessary.

    -

That brings us to page two.

    -

    On this page

    things are different.

This time, there's an image of a cat

    made of glyphs and symbols

    laying flat below this paragraph.

    -

I won't describe it any more

aside from the alternate text in the full transcription,

which you may have just heard

This seemed like the best way to do it

the script stands on its own just fine

    without any additional details

and I thought you should hear it alone, first.

    -

There is nothing on the other pages except words

    just so you know.

You could argue that goes for this one, too.

    -

And so, this is the final page

    before this begins for real.

What comes later? More posts like this

    that are less meta.

    When is later?

    In weeks to months

    knowing me.

    -

    What is this?

Where can I put it? Does it belong somewhere?

    What does it count as?

    Poetry? A comic? ASCII art?

    All? None?

    -

    I don't know,

    but these are words

    and there will be whimsy.

Transcription (Full)This post contains 3 pages of an ASCII art comic. For each page:

    • The title, "Testing, Testing" is in the top left.
    • The series name and comic number, "Words of Whimsy 0", is in the bottom left.
    • The release date, the 17th of January 2026, is written in shorthand in the bottom middle.
    • The page number is the top right.
    • The author's username, "Miner_Fabs@lemmy.world", is in the bottom right.
    • There is only one panel per page.

Page 1 has 3 spaced out paragraphs:

    "This is a test

    first and foremost

The exact words will be important later

    once everything seems correct.

    -

I wanted to start with a higher quality product

    trust me

my inner perfectionist still demands it

but to make the first real one perfect,

a simple test like this is all but necessary.

    -

That brings us to page two."

Page 2 starts with one paragraph, split in two:

    "On this page

    things are different.

This time, there's an image of a cat

    made of glyphs and symbols

    laying flat below this paragraph."

The cat is orange, and has a blank expression with squinting eyes. All four of its limbs are outstretched, and its tail is curled up. It is centered on the page.

Page 2 has two more paragraphs:

"I won't describe it any more

aside from the alternate text in the full transcription,

which you may have just heard

This seemed like the best way to do it

the script stands on its own just fine

    without any additional details

and I thought you should hear it alone, first.

    -

There is nothing on the other pages except words

    just so you know.

You could argue that goes for this one, too."

Page 3 has three spaced out paragraphs, and the first two are broken into multiple lines:

"And so, this is the final page

    before this begins for real.

What comes later? More posts like this

    that are less meta.

    When is later?

    In weeks to months

    knowing me.

    -

    What is this?

Where can I put it? Does it belong somewhere?

    What does it count as?

    Poetry? A comic? ASCII art?

    All? None?

    -

    I don't know,

    but these are words

    and there will be whimsy."

The words "I don't know" in the last paragraph are closer to the middle compared to the rest of the paragraph, which is right-aligned.

Additional Commentary (aka a lot of yapping that i'd like you to read)hi! it's about time i make something of substance, and lemmy seems like the best place to do it.

i wrote some poems a while back, with the intention to turn them into this kinda thing and post them here later.

this test post exists for two reasons:

    • to ask about accessibility. as the original form of these is poetry, i thought to present that on it's own first, then the full transcript, then the rest of the post's images, then this commentary. it's important i get this right now, since there will be more visual stuff in later instalments.

      • should i be adding proper alt text for each image, or is this good enough?
      • does it matter for screenreaders that the transcriptions are at the top, or could i keep them lower down next to this commentary without issue?
      • spoiler tags on lemmy seem to ignore single new lines, so i used dashes to seperate the paragraphs instead. is there a better way to do this?
    • to ask where i should post this series to. i intend to always share these here (!onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone) as penance for continually breaking the rule by lurking, though i'd like to crosspost it elsewhere (unless that breaks the transcripts...). !Funhole@lemmy.sdf.org seems like a good candidate, but what about communities like !comics@lemmy.blahaj.zone? or !Poetry@lemmy.world? as i said, i don't know what this counts as. it's not even ASCII art, technically; i sometimes use unicode symbols like ellipsis.

also going to use this post to shoutout my two major inspirations for this series:

    • Luke Humphris, who makes animated short videos with slice-of-life writing that i will be shamelessly imitating for a lot of these. he has some one-offs and a few ongoing series, one of which he's currently turning into a TTRPG. you can find his work here: https://linktr.ee/lukehumphris

    • Stone Story RPG, a PC/mobile game that uses ASCII graphics. originally, these would've been in a more traditional webcomic style or pixelart, but it hit me at some point that i love how this game looks, and i wanted to try something new. the gameplay loop is simple, and there are very occasionally ads (at least on mobile), but it's a good time killer, and it gives you a full-on programming language as a late-game unlock. see more about it here: https://stonestoryrpg.com/

feeling nervous now i've put all this effort in that this post is gonna get no traction, or the formatting's broken, or... whatever! i enjoy the process, so i'm gonna keep making my art until it means something to someone.

An ASCII art comic containing poetry. Transcriptions are in the post body.
