Interesting read. Kind of incredible to me that there are several government backed schemes that seem little more than a way for landlords to legitimise their work. It looks like they take hundreds of pounds and do no actual checks. Its just a money printing scheme for massive American companies.

Its the bit that was talked about the most, but its really not the main point, just a side effect. The main purpose of hs2 is (was) the give more capacity on the overall network, especially on the east and West Coast main lines but it had benefits across most of the country. By moving the express trains onto their own network you massively increase the capacity for local trains and freight. Reducing car traffic, potholes etc. Its hs2 or another motorway.

It's always surprising to me how people expect roads to be so well gritted and cleared but nobody expects the same of paths and bike lanes. The snow is even dumped onto the paths and bike lanes the majority of the time.

Does it work by the insects breaking the collapsed stone and squashing their hives? Won't that squash the insect jelly too. Also how did you get them in there and how do you stop them getting out?
