Gov. Jared Polis made the remarks at The Colorado Sun’s annual legislative recap event at the University of Denver, only to be drowned out by a small group of protesters

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Tuesday said he doesn’t regret his decision to commute the prison sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, despite widespread condemnation from Democrats and some Republicans, who said it will embolden election conspiracy theorists ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“I think this will be remembered fondly,” Polis said at The Colorado Sun’s annual legislative recap event at the University of Denver. “The nation needs to have a reconciliation and healing.

“People know I’m a man of action,” he added. “I’m a bold person, I’m going to do things that I think are right, and that’s why people put me here. They want me to do things that I think are right.”

Peters, an ally of President Donald Trump who has touted election conspiracy theories, was convicted in August 2024 of orchestrating a security breach of her county’s election system in a failed 2021 attempt to uncover voter fraud. Polis on Friday cut Peters’ nine-year prison sentence in half and ordered her to be released on parole June 1, saying she was being unfairly punished for her political views.

You can't reconcile and heal when the crimes against the country are still ongoing you dumbass. This isn't some innocent person who got caught up in something beyond their control, it's a non-repentant criminal who'd do it again tomorrow and will probably now help others do it elsewhere because of you.

The nation doesn’t need reconciliation and healing, it needs law, order, and justice.

I wish bipartisanship in this country didnt mean kowtowing to corruption so conservatives will like you.

Can anyone in Colorado comment on how they think this will affect his chances for re-election? If I lived in Colorado, I would never cast a ballot for this asshat again, and provided I live long enough, plan a pilgrimage to turn his grave into a toilet.

He is term limited, and Bennett, whom people assumed would place Polis in his seat if he won the governorship, said this decision is baffling and he's shutting him out. Those who are aware are pretty pissed.

It sickens me to see this move from a governor who calls himself a Democrat. I dont know whether to be angry at the DNC or in Polis. But Democratic party reps letting their constituents down seems to be normal these days. Polis is also a zionist cheerleader. He's a good example of why "vote blue no matter who" is destroying the party-- or whats left of it.

I saw another article talking about how JD Vance thinks Peters will be eligible for government compensation over this. Trump took a billion dollars of our money and stuck it in a fund at the DOJ to pay to any of his allies that may have been prosecuted for their multitude of crimes.

“The nation needs to have a reconciliation and healing.

Jesus christ this might as well be the official Democratic motto at this point.

He vetoed the cancer benefits bill for firefighters.

He said it was the Cities asking for it, but much more likely it was the Cities' representative. CIRSA.

You can see they lobbied against it. Successfully.

They also fought a firefighter over his cancer benefits.

I think many people believe Democrats vs Republicans is the fight for our Country, but I think if we don't secure Citizen rights and we keep relying on voted officials to fix urgent issues we're going to have the same problem come up again and again.

Transparency laws are important. There's a reason they keep raising the hourly rates, while records staff don't seem to get paid from those extra fees.

These insurance pools pay into a national pool, so I doubt it's limited to Colorado.
