Fun fact. US spending on social welfare programs as a percentage of GDP is over six times what is spent on military...but it's still 22nd in the world.

Also, USA only 18th as a percentage of GDP on military spending.

I feel like projection is a product of a lack of self-awareness.

All of it ties to narcissistic traits; narcissistic personalities speak through and in service of the ego, which the narcissist perceives as infallible and supreme. Therefore the self-reflection required to check oneself before making statements and accusations about the behaviors and beliefs of others is nonexistent.

Besides, even if what a narcissist says about another person can also be applied to them personally, they see themselves as a righteous exception. Perfect example is the narcissist’s prayer.

Even even better, since that pesky slavery thing is still around, let’s make him work at mcdonalds and pay for his own medical care from what little he earns. Even copays.

I mean we little people are supposed to be able to do it with rent and food and stuff as well, surely he can do -just- medical, right?

I was thinking more of a "I have no mouth, and I must scream" kind of scenario where no matter how much he wants to die we keep him alive to suffer more and more humiliation and grovelling.

Don't feed him McDonalds like he wants, make it a veggie Burger King Whopper liquified in a slurry with a full sugar coke once a year to celebrate his removal from office.

Ron Paul was right all along, I blame fiat currencies, if they had to actually raise taxes to fund their military adventurism instead of just debasing paychecks then voters would kick their ass to the curb.

We also wonder why houses can be 10x income now gatekept by 30 year mortgages, its because its underwritten by the money printer.

Whats hard to understand. They use the CPI to determine the money supply should grow at roughly 7% on average, as they survey boomers that bought their house for a sack of potatoes what they would rent their own house for to determine housing inflation, as they deduct the inflating price of goods based on subjective measures of technological improvement like Doby speakers that may or may not offer any tangible benefit, and when people get too poor and substitute to cheaper goods they change the basket.

This then lets them spend large deficits with no fear of default, because their debt gets cheaper to pay back as more currency circulates.

"The government is lying to us about living standards" doesn't relate to the issue of taxes and the national budget, unless you think people are deciding their reaction to declining living standards based on whether the government is telling them their living standards have declined, improved, or stagnated.

Would you like to trace the national debt, defense spending, and deficit through the past century, just in the US? Or should I talk about the massive deficits ran up by European countries even in the golden age (ha) of representative commodity money?

As I said initially, if the government had to directly tax them for all this then they'd actually care about the cost. If their living standards fall thats more of a mystery to them, they blame corporations or whatever their political leaning dictates.

I dont think we did have as large of military waste historically, in fact I think even entering WWII was resisted. Of course places like France and the UK had a well funded military, in order to colonize.

As I said initially, if the government had to directly tax them for all this then they’d actually care about the cost.

... would they? The fucking government under the GOP reduces taxes and increases spending. Functionally, what is the difference between that and increasing spending without increasing taxes? What would be different, in this scenario, speaking from the perspective of the electorate, under a non-fiat currency?

If you think that government policy is only being pursued because it IS sustainable under a fiat system, and that if it wasn't sustainable, it wouldn't be pursued, I have a whole case file of fascinating-yet-horrifying actions of governments and orgs throughout history.

... and also feel the need to point out that it's not sustainable under this system either.

If their living standards fall thats more of a mystery to them, they blame corporations or whatever their political leaning dictates.

Then what is the relevance of the entire subsistence basket point?

I dont think we did have as large of military waste historically, in fact I think even entering WWII was resisted.

We had dozens of interventions in Latin America and Asia during the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s. The only differences are that life was cheaper then, both politically and financially, and extraction of 'reparations' from occupied countries was more acceptable.

I got curious what Iran's national budget actually looks like and theres not much good information there's a Wikipedia article with no hard numbers.

The cited sources also seem to lack hard numbers. Here's one of them. As a funny aside half of them are apparently dated by an Islamic calendar, so these budgets are from the year 1402. Iran definitely acts like it's still the year 1402.

I didnt bother trying to get a translation of the articles cited since, again, they seem to discuss relative changes but no hard numbers. However, I think this picture gives us an idea what is going on.

We know from the Wikipedia article they raised the retirement age by 10 years, increased government and military pay, instated road tolls, and slashed the road budget at the same time. They raised their military budget by the equivalent of $5B USD (against a GDP of $375B) while raising electricity, natural gas, and water prices by 35% to pay for it.

To do a last bit of comparative math, the USA's total military budget is about 3.33% of GDP, while Iran's 2025 budget raised military spending by about 1.3% of GDP from whatever it was before. And again no hard numbers, but Iran's direct government and military spending is very large, apparently it's a driver of inflation.

So, actually, I think this take is basically correct.

Idk, seems like if they spent less on military they’d be quite a lot less capable of fighting off the current invasions.

It would be great if we could all universally stop spending that money on military at all, though

I knew I'd hear this take. And I don't buy it, in fact I think its very ignorant. No effort post with links this time since its been discussed to death. Iran's current regime has been incredibly belligerent since they overthrow the Shah in 1979 with the help of communists, and seized total power by then killing all of the communists. In the 45 years since they've been shouting "death to america" and after two straight generations of this, only now are at they having the war with america their grandparents wanted. Maybe great great great grandparents since they marry 9 year old girls. That's one of the "rights" they started a civil war for.

Plus they get in lots of smaller conflicts with their neighbors and they killed tens of thousands of civilians last time they had big protests (the equivalent of just pulling out an artillery regiment on BLM).

This is a military government which uses conflicts to stay in power and always needs a conflict.

The middle east has a terrorist state doing a war of extermination in Gaza and is not afraid of committing genocides in many other middle east countries called Israel financed by America so it expand it's territory . You expect them to not spend heavily on missiles? I am pretty sure the sanctions on Iran affect the population a lot more than armament spending .

Nobody is going to start a war with the united states because of Nukes so there is zero excuses to invest that much on the army instead of improving people lives with things like universal health care

Also the 30k protesters killed in 2 days is bullshit, only idiots believe it because 15k is the number of jews killed daily in Nazi Germany and it took years of preparation for logisticss and camp building to do so

  • I mean that's just the classic realist security paradox, right? The Iranian regime feels, not without reason, like they need to have a lot of military options to keep themselves safe against both internal and external threats. Those options include missile forces, the nuclear program, the ability to close the Strait of Hormuz, and a variety of regional proxies that can act in their interest and keep their regional adversaries from stabilizing and forming a real threat. However, having all those different security apparatuses makes other nations that have to interact with them (either because they're also in the region, or they rely on the Strait of Hormuz, or they would also die in a nuclear apocalypse) more likely to feel the need to increase their own security apparatus, which in turn increases the threat they can pose to Iran. Meanwhile the fact that all this investment is going into the military means that there are fewer resources available and less inclination to try and solve problems by other means, making it increasingly likely that any conflict is going to be resolved kinetically, which in turn further reinforces the need for all that military investment.
