TERFs make me sad. The fact that they have decided that people want someone less deserving of equal rights than them is so short sighted. If trans rights are removed, it just helps justify removing their rights shortly after. Gay marriage is already on the chopping block again in the US. And women's rights in general after that since much of the justification is biblical, not scientific, and in biblical terms, women are property of men.

Nicole Mowbray says putting everyone under the same LGBTQIA umbrella means there are limited opportunities to be in single-sex spaces.

the "lesbian not queer" and "female" t-shirts say a lot ... it's only in a post-feminist and post-gay-rights moment that self-identifying gay feminists can feel comfortable enough to break with their political alliances to push forward their right to discriminate against other members within their alliance, while simultaneously reifying the very gender essentialist views that generations of feminists have been fighting against 🤦‍♀️

this case is especially egregious given the fact that they already do have a right to discriminate:

Even without the legal exemption, the LAG can still exclude trans women from private gatherings, but LAG spokesperson Nicole Mowbray said public events were necessary in order to attract new members.

"Young and emerging lesbians cannot find their people because we've been underground in order to keep [biological] males out of our dating pool and our events," she said outside court.

They just want to expand their right to discriminate from private events to public ones.

On the one hand I can be sympathetic to the sort of cultural shock of integrating into society women who have penises and may look and sound like men, etc. - that's not an easy change to make in such a transphobic and sex-segregated society, and while I think the evidence backs those women really being women (and biologically female in non-trivial ways), it's still a big lift to get people to see trans women as women when to their eyes and ears they see and hear men.

That said, my sympathy vanishes when I read they already have the right to discriminate (and they exercise that right without issue), and this particular fight is ultimately just about being able to do that in bigger and more public ways ...

and there are already examples of exemptions given:

In 2009, an exemption to the Victorian Equal Opportunity Act was granted so there could be women-only swimming sessions at the North Altona leisure centre for two hours on a Friday night.

That was to allow Muslim women unable to participate in mixed-gender swimming sessions to engage with the sport.

Professor Thornton said that exemption was far less restrictive than the LAG's request for a five-year exemption.

"That's not a narrow time-scale of an hour or two," she said.

so it doesn't feel like the courts are particularly biased or unfair, they gave allowance to Muslim women to discriminate against trans women on a religious basis, but in a way that was reasonably restrained - so this LAG group seems either unserious or attempting to push the boundaries of exemptions in ways that are likely to fail (but may help generate backlash and mobilize the anti-trans movement there).

Either way, this group is not interested in LGBT+ rights, and see themselves as opposed to the LGBT+ rights movement. I suspect despite what they say, that they are more motivated by transphobia than gay rights.

Hi. Non-binary lesbian here, dated a few trans women.

If equipment is an issue for you, maybe consider doing the sane and normal thing of keeping that discriminatory shit to yourself until you've developed a tiny bit of tolerance for what is essentially the sexual equivalent of crying over finding a spider in the bathroom.

Some of us like spiders. Most of us shrug and don't really mind spiders. Being startled by finding a spider is fairly normal, but so is calming the fuck down after realizing it can't hurt you.

Banning spiders in the bathroom is not only stupid and unfeasible, it shows a fundamental flaw in your outlook as a human being. How do you ban nature from being natural? By that same logic, banning lesbians from interacting with other lesbians as a group for lesbians just proves that you aren't a group representing lesbians' best interests.

    Signed,

An appreciator of women and bathroom spiders.

Literally my first thought: s it going to be based on honesty policy or is one of them going to act as the official genital inspector? I mean I am a heterosexual cisgender man, but even I can see that they are going to struggle to attract new young members when the newbies have to demonstrate their fully functional reproductive system to a senior member before being invited to events.

I have heard some pretty rough stories of women transvestigating people and making it worse by pushing past the limits of verbal and psychological harassment into physical assault. Do they really feel that this will make their community safer?

Will they accept a ftm trans person into their group?

I doubt it. Once you start excluding some people, you start looking for ways to exclude everyone. Choose love, not hatred.

Trans lesbian is a common term. Sex and Gender are linked concepts and in LGBTQIA+ spaces gender takes precedence in self identification. A gay trans man likes men, a lesbian trans woman likes women. You are either ignorant of this or being deliberately obtuse because if you spent time in spaces where these terms are used by people describing what their sexual preferences are these concepts would be second nature.

Lesbians are women (a gender) who like women (still a gender). You would not be required to find everyone of the opposite sex attractive as a straight person and lesbians are not on the hook to be attracted to all women. Being in a relationship with another person uses language that can cause the same psychological harm to trans people as deadnaming and misgendering. If you call a Cis Woman and a Trans man in a relationship "Lesbians" you are implying they are both women. This is an invalidation of the trans half of the relationship and you will cause the trans person to experience heightened stress.

I suspect you simply discovered a dictionary and have decided your definition for yourself and are now attempting to apply it. The reason you are being downvoted is because your narrative is not reflective of how language is being used.

You know what being misgendered actually does to trans people? I will give you a hint. It's mental AND physical. It subtly poisons every relationship they have with other people. It destroys their ability to find meaningful social connections. It causes gut, skin and inflammation problems. It literally makes them feel more pain and be less resilient to unrelated stressors. Over time this means endemic health problems or suicides.

What being excluded from "cis women only" spaces does to trans people is institutional. If a trans women uses a male restroom they risk assault. It's very common for trans women to be stalked to secondary locations once they leave a male bathroom. They still face prejudice and retaliation in female bathrooms but they are dramatically safer and there has been virtually no incidents of assaults by trans people using bathrooms on cis women. They might feel like they are in danger but that isn't founded on any real world data. They might share a bathroom space with a trans woman a few times over their lifetime but for a trans person having a safe place to use the bathroom is an every single day problem. When trans women are forced out of women's support spaces they become increased targets of rape and exploitation.

I guarantee you there aren't trans women knocking down the door to these transphobic lesbian spaces. This is a fucking nothingburger. Trans women face incredible safety problems in dating and I can tell you from experience they don't stay where they aren't made to feel welcome because it's not fucking safe for them to do so. The REASON trans advocates stop these clubs from making this exclusion law is not because they want to force themselves into spaces they on the whole don't really want to be - it's because it opens the door to use cases to destroy their ability to exist in public. It makes them unable to support themselves which forces more trans sisters in illegal activities and sex work.

Quite frankly these women can suck it up and be catty fucking bitches to trans women like they've always been in the past and deal with the inherent drama of that instead of trying to change laws that will bite them in their own asses one day when they are expelled from bathroom spaces or have the cops called because someone can't tell the difference between butch and trans.

The reality of the situation is this doesn't affect anybody who you count as friend or family so you just don't care. You project what you think is the norm but you don't know because it's not your monkey not your circus isn't it? You don't care where this leads because nobody you care about will die from it and when the trans people disappear from the world around you you'll be unaware or worse celebrate.

I think I know when someone is a lost cause until something changes. Perhaps one day it will be someone you care about and then you'll have the insights you need. Until then.

Funny how the goalpost moves. It was "zero" before. If you want the actual portion that got proven as a hate crime in court findings :

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_killed_for_being_transgender

Be aware that transness is often a hidden statistic with a lot of reporting of deaths not valuing that information making it difficult to track. It's common inside the trans community for people to disappear with news of their passing being hampered because reporting in press and statistics typically only feature deadnames and lists them by identifiers that only few people inside their communities recognize. Families actively bury evidence of trans people after they pass so there is a concerted effort inside communities to actually mark and make notes when someone dies.

If you want the numbers on people assaulted or injured for being trans it's much, much higher.

    https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10110792/

    https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/

The suicide attempt rate for young trans people sits around 72% of the population in places that pass bathroom bills compared to the baseline 40%.

For adults the rate of successful suicides of trans people is between 14 to 22 times that of the general population depending on factors of what variety of trans they are.

Add this to the fact all these "protections" for women aren't actually protections for all women. It is protections for only the most feminine presenting women. Cis women have been injured or traumatized by being run out of spaces supposedly for them. People have lost their sports careers or faced worklace discrimination because of this. It's basically leveraging people's discomfort with a minority they don't understand to roll back feminist wins of yesteryear. Certain parts of the fight are just bigots blinded to the fact they are shooting themselves in the foot but to a lot of the people pushing this narrative trans people may be how they are selling the poison but we are not the main prize to be won.

"The Victorian-based LAG says it subscribes to the philosophy of lesbian feminism and does not believe humans can change sex.".

Nobody's suggesting people can change their biological sex. But gender is a social construct, separate from sex. That's why it's literally called transgender.

    Well, I didn’t downvote it.

Trans people are minorities in the gender topic. Gays and Lesbians are also minorities in the gender topic. It’s all about how some people discriminate against people who have different ideas about gender they like or gender they feel they are than “traditional social norms.”

When one group of minorities in a similar group are discriminated against, it puts cracks in the foundation those people have spent decades strengthening.

The conservatives are trying to drive a wedge into the LGBT. That’s going to cost the L and G their right to marry. Just watch.

i don’t know i agree, gays and lesbians have been fighting for decades, we had gay marriage legalised in 2017 after a decade of clear support (and frustration that gillard didn’t make it happen)

transgenders only went mainstream around the same year when bruce jenner turned into kendel jenner

there are also many in the lgb who don’t see the t as the same as them

gay/lesbian/bisexual is about the sex of the person you’re attracted to, transgenders think they’re someone they’re not, it’s a whole other thing

Im sure far right idiots are going to use the non-acceptance of transgenders to try and roll back gay and lesbian rights but i don’t think the community acceptance is there, most people are ok with the lgb, it’s the t who are they are uncomfortable with

    Think they’re something they’re not

Here’s the problem. Gay men aren’t attracted to men. It’s just a phase. A choice.

    Is that what you’re saying?

The trouble is that understanding transgender people is harder than understanding sexual desire. A number of structural MRI studies have reported that, on average, certain brain features in transgender people may resemble those of the gender with which they identify more than those of their sex assigned at birth. This suggests that the concept of having the brain of a gender that is not your body is somewhat of a possibility. Of course, These kind of studies are few and far between. But the lack of those studies does not mean there is no evidence to support it.

I find a lot of this comes down to one thing: why the fuck do you care? This is something going on with another person‘s body. I believe that everyone should stay out of it. There is a small group of psychologically damaged people who try to push against anything that is different from them. These people have been very vocal about seducing people to their way of thinking. They are able to even seduce gays and lesbians into thinking that transgender is something they should fight against.

I think in 100 years, society will be looking back on this with as much disgust as we look back on burning witches, and denying same-sex marriage.

So I have another question for you: do you discriminate against transgender people? Discrimination would be voting for something that would deny them rights. Or, do you feel that you can’t discriminate against them because they don’t actually exist? Which is exactly what they used against homosexual people. Calling it a choice.

No? If it was a choice there would be far less gay guys around, many/most would probably just go back to being straight again. We don't see that happening, gay conversion doesn't work, therefore it's obviously not a choice

The trouble is that understanding transgender people is harder than understanding sexual desire

Yeah, so what makes them part of LGB which are all sexual preferences?

why the fuck do you care?

I mainly don't, it's only once 'transgender women are women' started getting thrown around that suddenly I became involved against my will, because I like women, strictly women without dicks

I think in 100 years, society will be looking back on this with as much disgust as we look back on burning witches, and denying same-sex marriage.

I don't know about that, I think we've come a long way in 100 years and we've broken down the majority of barriers that had been up for the previous 100,000+ years, there's not a lot left to break down

Oh I see, you think that they suddenly effect you.

    Ok, honey, listen.

The genitals going on between the legs of another person have nothing to do with you. If you want a woman sans-penis, just ask if they have a vagina. No biggie. Literally not a problem at all. In fact probably all trans women are gonna tell you they’re trans if you start trying to take them home. Because you’re the demographic that murders them. (straight men, not like—you specifically.)

And before you say, oh but how do I know la la la la…. I’m gay. And before I hit on a dude, I gotta find out if they’re gay. Right? Yeah. So—you can do a little bit of work ahead of time to make EVERYONE MORE COMFORTABLE.

This is what you can says: “hey, I want to make everyone comfortable with who they are as a person, and in doing so, it’s important for me to consider gender and sexual attraction when talking to someone I may have an interest in. With that said, I’m a heterosexual man and I’m not really comfortable with penises other than my own. So, I have to confirm that you are indeed a biological female, are interested in penis, and that you’re not going to ask me to have a three way with another man.”

So look what I did there… I tossed in that 3-way thing so it wasn’t going to make her say “you think I had a dick?” It’s just all dicks in general!! That way she stays cool, and you don’t have and pp-problems? Also, I helped YOU check if SHE likes penis in the first place. You wouldn’t want to be that asshole who tried to nail a lesbian right?

    Green?

Ughhh we're about to witness another legal argument that boils down to "what is a woman" while pretending it's not just about whether they're cis–passing. If they really want to draw this line, the butch cis lesbians are in for a rude shock when accusations of transness come their way.
