I was recently talking to a buddy of mine who is in charge of production of some parts for a large hardware brand in Shenzen. We were laughing about how the US wants to do manufacturing again and how they think it will create jobs. He says in one of the factories he uses, they just have 1 dude working most of the time. They work in shifts, so it isn't like the same dude and they always have a second dude which hops around and helps where needed. But for most of the things they do, it's just one dude monitoring all the machines. If there is an issue, he shuts down that line and calls a dedicated repair team to get it up and running asap. It seems the US still has the idea of factories from WW2 in mind, where everything is dirty and there's people everywhere. The reality of most high end modern day factories, like those used to create computer parts, is everything is ultra clean, highly automated and run by very few people. China hasn't been sitting still these past 50+ years since everything was outsourced there, they are masters of efficiency and automation. Sometimes you'll see a small manual line doing a single step, which is tricky to automate. But it'll be maybe 15 women (usually women because they generally have better dexterity), doing only the one thing.

People here in the rural USA also think that factory jobs are magically "good", and that it was factory jobs themselves that created the middle class. As if the factory owner is somehow different and more noble than the owners of other giant corporations.

In reality the unions literally shed blood to make those jobs "good jobs". Those unions, and class consciousness, have since been destroyed. Even if 20th century style manufacturing did return it would just be another form of resource extraction. Those jobs may save people from the absolute destitution they face having been abandoned by their government but they're not going to support a healthy community. That's simply not good for business. When you don't give a fuck about human beings then what's actually "good" for business is a desperate, starving workforce.

People here praise Walmart, even though the community is demonstrably poorer. They've completely forgotten what was lost. They talk about that one great uncle who was fucked over by the unions the same way they talk about that one second cousin who never wore a seatbelt and was saved from a wreck when he was "thrown clear". They all believe they will somehow be thrown clear from the wreck that's been happening for 50 years.

You forgot to mention that that business went out of business.

I think the establishment is actually quite sensitive to unemployment figures because people that are unemployed have time to demonstrate.

The sad part is... I'm living picture 1 right now, with the Microsoft outsourcing my team to be lead from india and reducing manpower from 12 to five and thinking the service will be as good as before... first they wanted the bakers do the work of a pastry chefs and the pastry chefs do the work of the bakers. Now they want the bakers and the pastry chefs to do the butchers job too.

Ooh, my opinion is my own here.

I was completely out of the loop with who this creator was when I one day scrolled through /r/comics/top, wasn't aware of the drama, the circlejerk, you name it.

Her comedy is bottom of the barrel, obvious, decades old takes, that appeal to an era of the internet when comedy was written by those who had the technical know-how to engage with the internet - i.e., unfunny people.

Panel 1: she's eating airline food, followed by 3 panels of silly "yucky food" faces. Final panel "you expect people to eat this stuff??".

Panel 1: "honey will you take out the trash" followed by 3 frames of a guy beating up trash. Final frame, pizza cake self insert looking exasperated at the mess.

Panel 1: she's excitedly buying stuff from the bargain bin, followed by 3 panels of all her purchases falling apart. Final panel - the "bargain" sticker falls off of "bargain bin". She has exasperated look with hair pointing out.

Panel 1: she's sleeping awkwardly, followed by three panels of different awkward sleeping poses. Final panel, husband is waking up refreshed, she says "maybe we need to swap pillows"

All of these are technically jokes and/or observations, but just know that if you think these are worth illustrating and sharing, what you consider good comedy is about 15-30 seconds of effort, or the absolute first thing that came to my mind.

People don't like PC because her comics sit amongst others who exert effort to - at the very least - add a second layer to their comedy. It's unearned accolades given to the undeserving.

I ain't organising to hate her, like I said, I don't care about any of the circlejerk. And I can use meaningless buzz words too if you like. "It's pretty fucking authoritarian to silence criticism of art. Just don't look at my comment, I'm living in your head and you need to figure out why"

    See, fairly pointless rhetoric.

I guess i just don't get criticisms like this. They have been rerunning family circle for 50 years and Garfield as it turns out is better without Garfield, but this kind of banality is just too far?

Daily comics are mostly garbage with the occasional, possibly even accidental, brilliance.

Great example of why we shouldn't just blindly absorb memes. I'm not arguing on the side of the cartoon businessman here, but if the memesmith is talking about the US they're just plain wrong - unemployment is NOT "sky high" or even regular high. It's a little above the 50-year low we had a couple years ago, but it's below historical average. But if you don't already know that and can't be bothered to look it up, you're being led around by the nose. Brawndo is Brawndo, no matter who serves it up or why. Now go ahead and douchevote this like a good little trooper!

And no, I'm not trying to make everything be about America. It's somewhat implied by the red, white & blue and let's face it, most posts here are already about America.

Or, and hear me out, she might just be pointing out how the behavior in the first two panels eventually unquestionably leads to the second and third.

Also, while unemployment maybe β€˜low’ (and given how those numbers are often drawn from who’s pulling unemployment benefits, and at least in America they kick you off those after a little bit, I also wonder about those statistics, but I digress…) many people who are employed are severely underemployed, which is just as bad in the long run.

Granted, but if the stats are being skewed to make the economy look good, so would stats from other years because the government always wants everything to look good. Same goes for people being underemployed - I've been hearing that since at least the 90s. The truth is that unemployment right now are not historically high - everybody just wants to feel like their experience is unprecedentedly horrible. It's really not. And again, this isn't taking the side of greedy billionaires, it's just the truth. We should all be on the side of truth - even if it contradicts a meme.

She made a comic on reddit about β€œif women talked to men the way men talk to women”

A bunch of people commented that they had personally heard women say one or more of those things

Everyone who made those comments was banned and muted

People made posts on other subreddits explaining what happened and were banned and muted from /r/comics even without having posted or commented in it

She and the mods of /r/comics doubled down on future posts

There are a number of Reddit refugees on Lemmy.

In this particular instance, stating the blindingly obvious. There's no nuance here, no clever satire, nobody's views will be changed, just a pointless comic with bland art and a strawman argument.

Do you outspokenly apply this criticism to other creators in the comments sections, as that is a very standard criticism in this genre of creators, even amongst the most celebrated of them, or just Pizzacake?
