Having states, cites, countries, or even departments of government run their own mastadon servers would be great. I refuse to give my information to big tech just so I can keep up with public information. At the very least they should publish such things on their own websites, but these days those are rarely updated. Even critical things like wildfire information are posted on twitter and facebook.

They come with it, but it's not very refined without training. They actually need a lot of training to not herd people, especially children. Since humans don't respond the same way as sheep the dog will keep escalating its herding behavior until it bites the human.
I heard an anecdote once of a couple that was camping in a dispersed area with their border collie and the dog ran away. I don't care about instance rivalries at all. Reddit refugees fleeing the dismal quagmire that is the inevitable result of capitalist social media and going to the place MLs created as a direct response to those conditions, then criticizing MLs, is kind of amusing but that's all. I created a .world account first because I didn't know the lay of the land then realized I didn''t really feel like reading those same jokes, quips, puns, and slogans ad nauseum. I'm glad the architecture of lemmy allows me to choose a refuge where I don't feel crazy. I regret it took me so long to find my people.
