I feel like they could have made this very valid point without the racism

For me it's better If a foreign country knows my Habits since they are less likely to sell my Data to the domestic fascists.

If the Data is collected at Home the fascist only needs to be elected. And to do that they only needs the favor of the biggest national News outlet

For me it's better to not have random unsecured devices on my home network rolling out the red carpet to any malicious actors, foreign or domestic.

Keeping it in the homelab defeats the point. I could do separate vlans and route traffic but I'm still putting a bot online for an unknown, something like jellyfin is a better option all around.

These boxes are aimed at people who barely know what a network is, they just want to plug it in and watch. No config, no hassle, it'll de facto be on the same network as their laptops and phones.

The Darknet Diaries episode, SuperBox is an entertaining listen if this stuff is interesting.

Is that similar to a financial reach-around?

Or you DIY that in a few minutes with a monitor and a raspi for a fraction of the cost. But that demands some efforts. Efforts, I'm telling you. Am I mad?? Efforts!

The average US electronics consumer barely knows how to send a text message on an iPhone which has been a thing for 20 years. Asking then to do literally anything except plug a device in and turn it on is really, really not gonna happen.
