So, they did everything that users said would kill the site and it... killed the site?
Good thing they already banned or drove out all the top human contributors. There's no one left to say “I told you so.”

FUCK SPEZ
"Wait our traffic is down? I know! Let's give people more of what they hate!"
It was good. Long long ago. Entertaining. Infuriating. Educational. For the most part civil.
Now its mostly swamp. it's the trump era turd swamp. It's more a cesspool - swamps are great places - trumpville cesspool.
Ending anonymity is 180° out from its starting point. Taken over by corporate it's like everything else they 'buy' - for their profit.
Reddit is now so far away from what made it great in the beginning that it really isn't even the same site. It just sucks now.
Steve was always going to fuck it up. I recall a incident where he thought it would be cute to directly edit a comment in the database, bypassing the indicator that a comment had been edited after the fact. He never had any kind of good sense.
Fuck reddit and fuck Steve Huffman.
he apparently idolizes Musk, so thats whats he aiming for. thats why there have been so many purges, because of musk telling spez to suppress dissent.
You are downvoted now for what used to be standard reddit etiquette. That site lost its entire identity. 2 days ago they rolled out age verification in some European countries. So, I naturallt redacted all my posts and comments and left.
They'll put it back. I did that too and deleted the account, go look now and it's all there. Oddly they left the last things which were very critical so I doubt they even looked at what was there.
Never had that problem with older accounts. I guess I have to go in there to be permabanned. Shouldn't take more than a comment or two.
How did you delete your comments? I'm thinking about doing the same.
reddit was never good, it was tolerable at best. The fact that in the early days the jailbait sub was allowed to be one of the biggest on the site and was only pulled after national media attention is really all you need to know to reinforce that belief, though we could also point to so much more.
Anyone actually uses Reddit search? That thing has been so horribly broken since the very beginning that some of the best subreddits (AskHistorians, for example) openly recommend using a standard search engine with the "site:reddit.com" parameter.
It's depressingly hilarious how awful the search is. I don't think anyone could make a worse search if they tried. Half the time it doesn't even work for exact matches.
Back when I used to visit that site and tried the search, it was pretty much on par with Outlook's search. You couldn't find what you were looking for, basically.
I didn't think they could make it worse... But apparently they found a way, according to the title of this story. 😄
No, its useless, i suspect they made it that way so people would use google to search for specific reddit question, and of course the question you typed in google is what pops up for the question you are looking for 90% of the time.
only let logged in users use the site
traffic declines

I don't use reddit anymore because but sometimes a relevant thread comes up in a web search. But since they force you to log in they lost even the last bit of my traffic.
Yep, not logging in, that killed off the last bit of usage I had for reddit.
they dont want lurkers, they want people that logged in. the thing is they ban so many people last year, most became lurkers to protect thier accounts. There is enough old content on reddit you dont really need to login anyways, for question you might have for specific niche, which was og reddit is made for to replace fourms. not the current events slop.
Agree “many obvious reasons”. That said I feel as though there may be some merit to the “we need a way to keep AI bots from just taking all our content and reselling it via AI”.
There are a million other reasons to stop using Reddit and I won’t be going back.
But for years they built up a ton of great user contributed content. Just like it’s unfair for art, music, other content to be absorbed / plagiarized and repackaged as AI… it is also unfair that web bots steal all the old/good Reddit content and don’t give credit + make money off content generated by old Reddit.
Note: reddit bad. Also AI plagiarism bad.
On that note, reddit didn't generate most of that content either.
I mean I’m in my 50s and for years Reddit was awesome for me. Sure “Reddit” didn’t make all those posts themselves - but they created a space where folks like me could (and did) enjoy contributing and engaging.
Has been getting worse for a long time, but that doesn’t mean it was never good.
I don’t mind that Reddit in some ways profited from the content I contributed- because
AI takes without consent and charges for benefit
Reddit's problems started before the recent increase of capability in AI.
It started with all the AMA stuff, then the API BS convinced a lot of people to leave and that was before AI bots were really a thing. In the olden days when moderation was still being done the bots would have been eliminated, via various measures, but now no one cares, and it makes it look like the site is more active than it really is so the admins are not that bothered either.
It seems that people running big techs are behaving in a consistently erratic way. There must be something behind it
Idk, I think that even in late stage capitalism demanding constant "growth" when they used to be one of the most visited websites of the entire internet is just delusional.
I'm 70 and found Reddit about 7 years ago. Was wonderful. Ended up getting banned probably for commenting on the fat stupid incompetent pedophile rapist Donald Trump. Fuck em. Time to move on.
everyone already searches reddit by adding "reddit" to a google search. putting ads in the native search kind of confirms nobody was using it
yup i do that most of the time.
People still search reddit?
Keep making it worse, that will surely help. I have a suggestion: how about getting your stupid ban-happy admins under control?
It's bad now that they increased the ad size in posts. Now you have to scroll more to see the first comment.
this will make people less likely to click a ad-link. no wonder for the past year they have been going after OF and people who are trying to earn money by directing to thier own site. reddit wasnt getting a piece of the aciton, so they increased thier filter sensitivity every time they do a sweep.
I already successfully block all Reddit ads. I use Old Reddit exclusively, as I cannot stand New Reddit.
So if Old Reddit goes, so do I.
I've just had it with the Reddit experience, forcing an algorithm on me was the end.
It was already shit before the API exodus in June 2023 thus killing alienblue and other loved clients…
Was an OG user from inception. Haven’t been back since. Any time I want or need to view certain things (seldom) RedLib instances work well. You can always set up an rss feed from one and get chronological content if you wanted.
https://redlib.catsarch.com/ is one of many that has been stable for awhile.
Didn't they kill RSS?
Don’t think it matters for a redlib instance. Just checked and it’s definitely still working.
i use the classic layout extension, to look at reddit with "old reddit esque"
redlib (while permabanned) is a bit like being kicked out of the bar and staring back in through the window. You can look, sure, but a bar is about interacting and getting drunk. You are doing neither.
That’s not the point. I nuked my would be 20+ year old account. I don’t care about interacting (with bots and lots of kids).
apparently they stop noticing after a while(assuming you arnt one of those serial evaders that uses hundreds of accounts), i tested and made one just for Niche content only.
Given how the site has legitimately gotten worse since I was kicked off it back in May, I'm actually kind of glad I got off the ship before it went to pot. Besides, I don't want to just make another account. I want MY account. It's a matter of principle even if I never go back.
Maybe Spez should charge a smol fee per search. Then another lil fee when the user clicks a result. Then he could charge a small fee per minute of reading the linked result. Spez sure is smart!
Sounds like circling the bowl ever since investors became a thought
It's funny watching Reddit die because it's already been replaced by something better.
It just doesn't know it's dead yet.
Their search already basically didn't work. Who even uses it that putting ads on it will be seen?
I’m pretty sure most people end up on Reddit because they searched up a question through a search engine and then probably navigate away when it asks them to create an account.
Are they putting more ads on other search engines, or the site's internal search tool? It sounds like the latter.
Only the site’s internal search, but who uses that anyway?
15 years on that hell site, and I think I used reddit search once, thought "this is dog shit" and didn't use it for year. I think I tried it once or twice to see if it got any better, but it didn't.
I'm well aware how difficult it is to implement a decent search, but you can search for the title of a post word for word and it won't be on a single page
Advanced Publishing are Reddit's largest share holder... It's owned by the billionaire Donald Newhouse ($26 billion), and his publishing empire.
There's a rightwing pro-Israel jewish magazine named Tablet magazine, run by Alana Newhouse.
Tablet magazine has received funds from pro-Israel organizations and (according to Wikipedia) has promoted products associated with Peter Thiel (who is involved in weapons and emergency information systems for Israel) and Bari Weiss.
I believe the Newhouse publishing empire might have a specific view of where they want Reddit to be on the issue of Israel-Palestine... And they might not want Reddit to exist or have a wide audience.
Turns out they've owned Reddit for 15+ years now. Sometimes when researching something you hit a dead end, or find facts against your argument and have to accept them and change your viewpoint.

Wow! Every time I see the wreck it takes my breath away... It has been preserved so well! If you look closer you can still see the ads they put everywhere on the search pages as a last ditch effort to keep it afloat just before it sunk.
This is as close as we go however, we will only trail our submersible along the edges of the outer hull, this is the resting place of thousands and thousands of bots and it would be disrespectful to disturb their grave....also you need to login to an account and eew.....
But it’s already full of ads…
Anyone remember when Reddit didn't have ads much at all and where there'd be an occasional ad in the sidebar, often there'd be a game instead?
Beautiful, good move, will go great with their helpful new algorithm. There's more ways to surface fun content now and have a blast, it's chock full of content and interactions and it will only get better and more profitable (which means more relevant) with these changes. So sad I deleted my account and am never going to post anything there ever again. Good luck with your big fancy social network, pigboy.
Having done everything in their power over successive years to ensure that even the most dedicated users of their platform feel unwelcome, Reddit sees traffic declining
I left reddit years ago, but I just checked my county's subreddit recently after some big news happened in my home country. The last post was made 6 days ago, subreddit was basically dead, traffic must be abysmal overall.
