NBC News projects that Hamilton, a pastor and former Republican, will become the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in deep red Kansas since 1932.

Adam Hamilton has defeated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas, NBC News projects, becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in the ruby red state since 1932.

The upset victory in a state Donald Trump carried by 16 points in the 2024 election gives Democrats a major boost in the fight for the Senate majority.

Hamilton, a minister at the largest Methodist congregation in the country, has never held public office and was registered as a Republican until earlier this year.

A minister and a recent Republican. My excitement is tempered. A win's a win, but he's got to vote for stuff, too.

He is a Manchin or Fetterman. Mega church pastor. He is a plant to disrupt. Distrust everything about him. Many victories to celebrate, this is not one.
