Cory Doctorow speaks to this in his Reverse Centaur book. Recommended reading for sure!

Considering AI has proven copyright doesn't exist, it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

Meanwhile, keeping it as it is means basically everything becomes copy left, because AI models included CC content like Wikipedia

I don't understand. That's the whole point of SA

Edit: fine print says it depends on the country and how much the work is derivative

No, the point of the share-alike clause is that someone who creates a derivative work has to release it under the same conditions.

But if they don't, then all that happened, legally, is that they infringed on someone else's copyright. It doesn't mean the license applies to the derivative work anyway.

I feel like from where we are now the best way forward would he to push to get rid of copyright all together. Copyright has never served small creators only big companies, tightening down on copyright to fight ai models will just exarcebate this effect. Disney will be able to negotiate and get a large chunck of money from the companies, any small time artist will be denied their art was used and not get anything.

That's literally the current situation, that's why journalists and authors are trying to sue over it.

The EFF is effectively siding with "Disney" here in this case

No? The EFF is siding with the AI companies' claim of "fair use" for exactly the reason you state - that it's better for small creators in the long run.

How does letting AI companies have total access to creators work without needing permission or licensing fees, help them exactly?

The linked article is talking about protecting people making the models, not making the content (It actually specifically says that letting creators choose license their content would actually hurt them, and that AI companies should always have access)

Because you have the same rights as those AI companies. The law doesn't say "you can use this art for fair use purposes unless you're a big mean AI corporation." It applies to us all. You tighten it for one and you tighten it for everyone.

would he to push to get rid of copyright all together

not a new idea, the idea has existed for decades and doesn't have anything inherently to do with AI :P

True, but I think the idea would have more chance of succeeding with the current stage of ai models. However it would mean (partially) siding with the ai companies which I don't think is a popular idea.

It is interesting that the "information wants to be free" crowd has flipped to "protect the poor media companies" the second their personal GitHub repo is crawled...

If that's the route to take then remove it completely for everyone (and implement UBI 🤗).
