San Francisco officials have extended the local landmark designation for the site of a historic transgender riot that took place in the 1960s at a late-night diner in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The entire building at the corner of Turk and Taylor streets once home to a Gene Compton’s Cafeteria is now considered a city landmark.

One night in August 1966, the exact date now lost to history, a drag queen customer of the 24-hour diner reportedly threw a cup of hot coffee in the face of a police officer who tried to arrest her without a warrant. The incident sparked a riot by trans and queer patrons upset with being harassed by police, as detailed in the 2005 documentary "Screaming Queens" by transgender scholar and historian Susan Stryker, Ph.D.
