San Francisco officials have extended the local landmark designation for the site of a historic transgender riot that took place in the 1960s at a late-night diner in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The entire building at the corner of Turk and Taylor streets once home to a Gene Compton’s Cafeteria is now considered a city landmark.

One night in August 1966, the exact date now lost to history, a drag queen customer of the 24-hour diner reportedly threw a cup of hot coffee in the face of a police officer who tried to arrest her without a warrant. The incident sparked a riot by trans and queer patrons upset with being harassed by police, as detailed in the 2005 documentary "Screaming Queens" by transgender scholar and historian Susan Stryker, Ph.D.

At the heart of the investigation is an exercise in the mandatory high school course involving an “identity wheel,” which asks students to consider personal characteristics such as sexual orientation, gender identity, race, and economic status. The exercise is intended to help students examine how those characteristics relate to privilege and disadvantage.

The Department of Education is also investigating whether the Palo Alto and North Monterey County school districts properly “notify parents and obtain their written consent” before surveying students about the protected information as part of their ethnic studies programs.

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Nearly $1 million in rare trading cards, including highly valued Pokémon cards, were stolen from a FedEx truck parked near a California business that authenticates and grades the collectible items, according to police.

The theft is the latest in a string of heists involving Pokémon cards, which have exponentially increased in value in recent years.

The Santa Ana Police Department said in a statement on Tuesday that the heist occurred on Oct. 13 outside the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) office in Santa Ana.

The hundreds of stolen cards are estimated to be worth a total of $963,000, according to police.

"However, the exact value of the stolen items has not yet been determined," according to the Santa Ana police statement.

The report, dated September 21, 2026, shares that, from January 1 to July 31, 2026, a total of 416 hate crimes were documented across all groups in all bureaus of Los Angeles, compared to the 408 that occurred throughout the same time period in 2025, representing only a near 2% increase. But when looking specifically at crimes broken down by identity, three of four LAPD bureaus (South, Valley, and West), show that the percentages of hate crimes against both gay men and transgender people increased from 2025 to 2026.
