On Wednesday, EU Member States approved a change to the GDPR that would put the profit-making interests of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX over European's fundamental right to data protection. According to the approved text, processing personal data “in the context of AI” should automatically be lawful. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens “in the context” of AI. Schrems: “Under the agreed text, the profits of AI companies would typically trump European’s fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans.” All this is happening despite the key figures of AI corporations actively warning about the enormous risks associated with their own products.

Guess the U.S. isn’t the only place where it works.

Only americans are surprised by this. GDPR is worthless, EU is a clown show, we didn't even vote for.

Nah. You sound like you have no clue what the EU is.

This new AI regulation is bad, but the EU is the biggest consumer protection agency on the planet.

If you didnt know this, dont comment about it.

Surveillance-capitalism is the new norm. Don't wait for regulation--it won't arrive. Protect your own computers with libre-software. Don't use their services.

Sounds like the kinda thing we ought to have refendums for but let's not pretend we have actual democracy.

"EU member states approve..." Always this vague wording so as to imply some sort of democracy. It's the EU oligarchy that has approved this.

Could they claim "EU citizens approve..."? Of course not.

Fuck the EU oligarchy, and even more fuck the EU sheep citizens that don't rebel against this. You get what you silently accept.

Hah! Welcome to Europe, contemporary fascism! Time to bid farewell to all of your rights and freedoms, Europeans. We need to do this to win. Win what, you ask? Super-profits for the bourgeoisie, of course, under whose dictatorship we all already live. Shit's getting fucked in record time. Prepare for increased austerity and violent repression of dissent. Prepare for war. Prepare for famine, prepare for deteriorating ecology. Prepare for death. We are never voting our way out of this.

And the parliament has to vote against it, and I'm betting they'll then have to do that again and again ad nauseam, same as with chat control...

Many people shit on the EU as if it's undemocratic, but it's always the national govs of member states pushing for this kind of shit. It's usually the EP that puts a stop to it.

Are we fr? It's fine to steal personal data as long as it's for "AI"? Not that the big players aren't already doing it, but it doesn't feel like the EU needs to condone that behaviour

  • This agreement is not an agreement on the final law. The Council has to negotiate the final wording with the European Parliament, which is yet to take a position.

Contact your MEP. Can probably reuse list from https://fightchatcontrol.eu/
