Holy shit, I haven't read that name in a long time. I used to hang out on irc in a channel that levelord frequented. He seemed like a genuine and kind guy. Damn.

We're losing the gaming pioneers left and right, it's sad. I knew the game composer Bobby Prince was in poor health earlier this year because I had seen a crowd funding campaign to help him with medical debt, but it was only the other day I found out he had died in June earlier this year.

As for 3D Realms, Duke Nukem 3D was the first game a school mate and I tried making levels in back in the 90s, and it wasn't easy. Quite a feat making as interesting levels back then as the the first professionals made.

I interned at Ritual and had the pleasure of working with him.

I met him at a games festival once. He bought me a drink even though I was a student and was great to hang out with. He seemed like a great guy.

It's a shame. I hope he rests in peace.

EDIT : This was right around the time when Sin Emergence came out. Unfortunately, it didn't do so well, and as the article says, he had to move to casual games.

    It was still fun though.

The most important duty you have as a level designer is to bring the player ‘into’ your level,” he said in a 1999 interview for the book Game Design: Secrets of the Sages. ”It’s not until after this submersion that issues like action, game play, and even the Fun Factor enter the game. The more of your level to which the player can attach himself via familiarity, the stronger the player’s sense of ‘being there’ will be.”

Oh, he must be talking about cinematics. He means cinematics, right? --Game Company CEO, MBA

Even if you didn't play his levels, you will certainly have played levels inspired by his flow.

Pioneers in computing and gaming have left a hell of a legacy.
