300k a year and all of the free drugs you can handle. Other perks include blackmailing sex workers, strong arming food from restaurants, carefree drunk driving, and fantastic union benefits that "civilians" can only dream of.

Yep. Cops in my town routinely make more than the mayor with overtime they stole.

There's a great pic of one of them sleeping in their patrol vehicle.

I know you're trying to circlejerk so forgive me for turning the lights on, but:

If you work 6PM-6AM+ and you have court at 8AM-12PM, then work starts again at 6PM, would you not be tired?

What about if your shift is 6PM-6AM+ and you have training from 7AM to 4PM, then back to your 6PM-6AM+ shift?

Both of those happened to me. No matter how much you dislike cops, they can't be immune to fatigue to make you happier.

Wow, those are some terrible management practices. Sounds like the people who run that outfit should be fired and the whole thing defunded & shut down.

Agree with the first, but I'm not an anarchist so I can't agree with the latter two.

But it sounds like you've conceded the point that fatigue is a very real part of the job, so even if we never hear from moldy_rice I'm glad you acknowledged it.

Wow. You'd think of all cities, Seattle would hold their cops accountable. I guess my understanding on Seattle was wrong.

Seattle has some of the worst cops in the country and we have for a long time. You're thinking of weird hipster art and cafe culture, which does exist in a few neighborhoods, but the primary powers are big business like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Boeing.

Or my pet theory which is that indiscriminate hate from the public makes an agency worse, not better.

Why would you want to join an agency if you know the locals hate you?

Simple: If you don't care what anyone thinks, or even enjoy the hate.

Obviously, that's going to be a very bad egg.

The US police hasn't really been a slave-catching service since the days of chattel slavery, but it's possible you have bona fide slave-catchers in your area if you're not in the US. Why haven't you done anything about that?

if you guys had any souls, you'd be intervening with ICE instead of attacking the people who pay your salaries.

Trite meme that ends your otherwise solid comment aside, I suspect I personally would get involved if I knew or suspected criminal wrongdoing from a federal agent, but most cops (like most anyone else) would much rather have a paycheck at the end of the week than feel good about their moral compass.

But I was fired for refusing illegal orders years before ICE started blatantly breaking the law, so my "if I was in those shoes, I would totally do the dangerous but morally correct thing" is almost as worthless as if you said it.

Much like in Eichmann in Jerusalem, even those who actively and knowingly participate in evil deeds are more concerned with getting promoted than stopping to think about the morality of it all.

Seattle had one (or more?) of them making over 400k with "overtime."

SPD officers had a massive payday in 2024 owing to hefty 23 percent raises from the new police guild contract, which were applied retroactively for the past three years. Seventy-six officers made more than $300,000 in 2024, while nearly 400 officers cleared $200,000.

    “Overtime” doing “paperwork”.

Far be it from me to tell someone they’re maximizing their income but ACAB and it’s significantly in excess of what is reasonable.

Paperwork is still work. If you're over your time, you should be paid overtime.

Sure, but they aren't actually doing their job. They're sleeping in their cars or working a second "security" job but double-billing the hours.

Are we talking about the actual overtime or the abuses? If the former, my comment makes sense. If the latter, I guess they were just circle-jerking by saying "bad things are bad?"

I wonder how this compares to the LASD? SD has more gangs, right? Intuitively I’d also expect more embezzlement from them.

I think you have your answer in "NYPD four times the size"

LAPD has ¼ the people to cover almost as many people over greater distances, so the overtime adds up.

They're having trouble hiring so the salary goes up too.

I'm not getting into whether more or fewer is better for the community. I will say that both need better training with emphasis on human rights and de-escalation.

Okay I checked again and although the Los Angeles metro area contains over 10 million residents the LAPD is only responsible for about 4.2 million of them, because for instance Beverly Hills and Santa Monica have their own. Meanwhile NYPD is responsible for about 8.5 million people. So that's twice the number and you are correct. My point is not completely invalid however, because NYPD has 4 times the personpower. And there's still the matter of distances.

these aren't street cops, they're senior detectives and admin. a sergeant makes about $125k with 20+ years of experience.

"The officer and detective group includes some supervisors, since LAPD’s own rank descriptions classify Detective II and III as supervisory positions. What the payroll shows is that nearly half of the people over $300,000 held officer or detective titles rather than sergeant, lieutenant or command ones. The Detective III at the top of this story was an example and not the top of the list, since a Deputy Chief II was paid $476,701 and two Sergeant IIs were paid $456,662 and $452,971."

It's a wounder what reading the article can do for you.
