Personally I believe the US has had weapons in space since Reagan.

Thank God, really. Because why do starving children need food, or sick people need Healthcare? Who cares if we're 4 trillion in debt. Fuck it, space lasers run by jews.
Even mirroring the usage of superweapons that won't win the war...

Lol if anybody else was doing what USA is doing, USA would be doing anything to stop that somebody else from doing what the USA is already doing. Fucking hypocrites
Well, it's official. Humanity is going to be forever stranded on earth by debris. That's a little sad.
After the world agreed to not put weapons in space.
How y'all feel about a deranged narcissistic manchild having weapons over your house right now? Pretty great I bet!
Yeah apparently the world agreed and didn't assume the US would fall as far as to elect someone who thought being told no was just a speed bump for whatever he was trying to do, which is mostly anything that lines his pockets as long as he has no real obligations to actually be a leader of a nation.
Seriously, what the fuck? Course easy to see the lines from poor education and a shit load of propaganda that says the people making things worse are really protecting the hard working folk, and you have to trust them or you're on the wrong side of a book of morales/philosophy they never actually understood anyways.
It's quite genius really but awful for betterment of society and humans. One bit of critical thinking works and the whole house of cards topples unless they're in the sunk cost fallicy time. Course they made sure that wasn't likely via the propaganda.
It's maddening to know how easily manipulated we can be, and I'm not American but definitely try extra hard these days to understand anything I read and put it in context before accepting as written. Imagine what we could accomplish if we didn't have to keep doing that for everything we read?
US claims they have weapons in space. Ftfy
I guess we have to thank the Trump admin's incompetence for announcing this. Even though, I have no doubt that Putin in particular doesn't care for any treaty if it gets in his way.
They didn't say what kind, though. Likely the Trump admin bluffing while low on interceptors.
This was a foregone conclusion as soon as they created a military branch called United States Space Force.
Incidentally the documentary series Space Force covers it very well, shame it got cancelled in its prime made by Netflix and then they did their usual.
Wasn't their a longstanding no weapons in space treaty signed. What a surprise.
no, that treaty only covered nuclear weapons. it's a poorly kept secret that the US, Russia, and China all have weaponized satellites, the US is just the first to admit to it. there was even a proposal around the turn of the century to put 20ft tungsten rods on satellites for precision kinetic strikes, since that wouldn't violate the treaty. they called them "rods from god". I'm guessing that since we know about it, they didn't actually do it. probably because of the logistics of getting such heavy projectiles into orbit.
we also know of weapons tests that Russia has done for anti-satelite weapon platforms. presumably they are capable of shooting down NATO communication and GPS satellites if a war ever breaks out.
Didn't China also demonstrate their ability to destroy a satellite from a different satellite about a decade ago? I remember it creating a huge uproar because of the massive amount of space debris it created.
Also, given our military budget, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we did go to the expense of putting massig tungsten rods in orbit.
perhaps, but this is one of the instances where I actually believe it didn't happen. not because the US is trustworthy, but because tungsten rods of that size would weigh incredible amounts. how many of those could be lifted at once? and every time you launch one, you have to spend more time and money putting it back. why do that when there are cheaper and easier ways to strike a target? the cost benefit ratio is just so out of proportion that I believe even the US military, which is famous for stupid ideas, would decide against going through with it.
not to mention that space weapons are only really viable so long as your adversaries aren't sure they're a weapon. Russia has anti-satelite missiles they can launch from the ground. china has "tug boat" satellites that can push other satellites out of orbit. these space-based weapons are incredibly vulnerable to counterattack. they can reliably work exactly once. I don't think either country would allow the US to have a reloadable kinetic strike platform in space if they could destroy it. the US population isn't likely to be willing to go to war because a space gun was blown up. that would be a pretty hard sell, especially since the nation responsible would probably throw their hands up and deny it.
Kessler syndrome here we come.
but if you said the same thing just three days ago, you would have been called a conspiracy theorist
The Soviet Almaz 4 space station had a fucking cannon, in the 70's
Can't wait for mecha-hitler to scorch the planet with his fleet of time-traveling UFOs next. /s
Some time ago I watched a vid about a theoretical space ballista that shot titanium (IIRC) rods down to earth and the theoretical damage was comparable to a nuke but without any radiation.
Such a rad concept from a nerd / scifi POV.
And Chatgpt will control the lasers in case of total annihilation (or some software bug)? Amazing technology.
