Unfortunately, not all applications actually set priorities via VK_EXT_pageable_device_local_memory. As for native Vulkan applications, I haven’t observed any idTech game using the extension directly, at least :/

The D3D side looks a lot better, because vkd3d-proton already uses VK_EXT_pageable_device_local_memory when available, and translates both the ID3D12Device::MakeResident/ID3D12Device::Evict API calls as well as priorities set via ID3D12Device1::SetResidencyPriority to priority values set using the Vulkan vkSetDeviceMemoryPriority command. Lots of D3D12 games utilize at least one of these APIs, so the hints these games provide will now be utilized.

My experience with Linux gaming is that Proton tends to work better than native applications, even when both are available, and it seems this might extend the trend.

    Nvidia vram leaks probably won't respect this either

    So, is this virtual VRAM stored on the other memory chip we don't have supply for?

    You don't have to buy more RAM in order to benefit from this change. Your existing one should be enough. Usually if your system needs more VRAM, then there is most likely still some system RAM left to use it as an extension.

    Only AMD GPUs? Cries in ancient 1070 Ti ;-;

    Your GPU is both abandoned by proprietary drivers and doesn't have a GSP so it can't be properly supported by the kernel drivers either (at least not until someone somehow figures out how to reclock them, which hasn't happened in the last ten years). In other words, your cries are appropriate.

    It's still supported by the 580 driver for a few years. But yes, after that it will be in a rough spot.

    Yes but that line will never receive feature updates again, only kernel compatibility and security fixes. That also means there is no chance for any VRAM usage improvements on a driver level anymore.

    My 1070 ti is still going strong. One my best purchases.

    I am however considering an upgrade to a 1080 ti.
