In fairness, the argument that AI is a cult/false religion/false god has been made many times before, however I believe that AI and the AI community most closely aligns with a cult, and here’s why:

Indoctrination techniques:

Generally, techniques that indoctrinate users into the cult tend to follow similar trends, which are notable in many of the AI models having similar effects on the users who subsequently become frequent users of the technology. Broken down, I’d say it’s something like this:

-Innocuous beginnings: Cults are notorious for beginning the indoctrination process with something simple and seemingly harmless on the surface (I.e. conferences, videos, films, games, etc.) these are all real techniques that various cults have used in the past, to somewhat success. Likewise, AI chatbots, image and video generators present just this: an invitation to engage with something fun and seemingly harmless, something that engages the audience and draws their attention.

-Love bombing: Perhaps the most notorious hook of cults is love bombing — giving heaps of praise and complements to the joining members. Likewise, AI chatbots constantly tell you how good your point is or how you’re always on the right track (“you’ve hit the nail on the head”, “that is an amazing point” are but a few I have read of Gemini) This is undoubtedly a form of love bombing.

-Promise of more: Cults often work by enticing their audience with something good, but promising something great (something better) later. Likewise, AI tech companies are always promising more, more, more if you subscribe/follow their work. What better reward for AI users can there be but the promise of bigger and better AI? This is exactly how both cults and AI operate.

Beyond the indoctrination similarities, there are also many, many peripheral similarities (by which I mean subtle, not less important similarities) which include:

-reach and scope: historical cults have often managed to expand their reach across multiple countries around the world. Need I explain how this is similar to the reach and scope of AI?

-withholding/hiding information

-leaders who turn out to be crooks/criminals

-leaders who amass fortunes

And many more.

What do you think? Are the similarities superficial, or could AI actually be a worldwide cult hidden in plain sight?

I think, as a dedicated LLM hater, that calling AI a cult is overstating the case. But I will also point to the fact that some of the upper level drivers like Elon Musk are 100% motivated by Roko's Basilisk, so.

Roko has a lot to answer for. These cretins are destroying the planet, and probably our entire species, because they're afraid of a philosophical thought experiment. I wonder if that had never been written, or popularised we might be having an actual golden age of technology.

Roko's Basilisk is the stupidest bullshit I've ever seen anyone take seriously to outside of conservative Evangelical Christianity or other literal religious cults. It's just Pascal's wager for people who think they're too smart for Pascal's wager. Why in tf would an artificial superintelligence bother constructing a simulated hell for humans who didn't contribute to its existence. Does this hypothetical ASI think it can influence the past by acting in the present? I immediately disregard every opinion someone has if they admit to taking Roko's Basilisk seriously.

Exactly. If a future superintelligence wants to create a copy of me to torture, well I suppose it can do that. But that entity it creates will not be me, but a lossy copy of me. I will be long dead and in the ground.

If a future superintelligence wants to create innocent sentient beings just to torture them, well that's on the AI. It can be responsible for its own sins. But it has nothing to do with me.

I’m in a weird middle ground where I know how to use it well because work requires it and I require a paycheck. But I also hate it and consider it a path to the destruction of everything.

You can present AI cultists with all the data and information available to backup how bad it is for their brain and society. It won’t matter. They write it off and call you either a Luddite or a hater. That’s what happens when you allow technology to dumb down your brain. No study or hard data is going to deter them from half-assing their way to everything instead of actually learning.

Ditto. AI is a tool, that’s it. Sometimes useful, sometimes not, sometimes laughably bad/incorrect.

People that talk to AI like another person I’m like, ok you do you but I view it like talking to a hammer or circular saw… but with added vast environmental damage and IP theft.

I have a handful of tools and added skills that make it talk less like a human. They avoid marketing speak, passive voice, filter out annoying words and structures, etc. Worth it. It gets the job done and doesn’t try to pretend to be human. I don’t need coddling.

Are the luddites a cult? I'm thinking more and more of becoming a cult member if that is the case. I call your electronic digital typing machine and raise you a pencil and a cocktail napkin.

I want to see more people claiming formal religious exemptions to being forced to use AI in the workplace. A good case can at least be made for chat bots.

Plenty of religions and cultures have held that words are sacred. The universe was spoken into being. Life was breathed into Man. Etc. That's the tradition I would appeal to.

If I'm forced to use a chat bot at my work, I'm being forced to have a machine put words in my mouth. Instead of my words representing my own voice, my own, my own soul, a soulless machine speaks for me instead.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to refuse to use AI on religious grounds.

Your whole account and username is based on hating AI but it's the other side that's in a cult?

Fact is there's has been a media campaign being run since it started so gen pop would clap and cheer when big AI companies capture the market with regulations. You just responded to it.

I'll keep using it to lighten my work load at work and spend more time fucking around. Hopefully, Big AI loses even if they have your help.

I only shit on Big US AI companies because I want Chinese open source AI (and the few smaller US and European companies making open models like Poolside, Mistral, etc.) to make their business model of renting access to frontier AI impossible. I consider correctly aligned AGI in the hands of a for-profit US company to be more of an existential threat than a fully unaligned AGI. I think humanity would be better off extinct than forced to live under the values of Elon Musk or Sam Altman until the heat death of the universe.

I don’t use AI (much) I do occasionally ‘test’ it to see how it fares but that’s as much as I do; I certainly don’t use it for life stuff

My community is not exclusive for people who only hate AI; those who like it are welcome too

So you don't use AI much, but you know exactly how everyone else is using AI?

Also is your entire argument about "AI"? Or LLM-based AI in particular?

Cult-like behavior could grow in any community, but shunning the tech itself for no other reason seems backwards?

And what alternatives do you have in mind, if not LLM AI, what would be your ideal next step towards artificial intelligence?

P.S. I hate billionaires and the AI bubble just as much the next person, but these black/white "AI bad" arguments are getting tiring.

To be clear: I read about what happens with AI in the news/on the internet mostly, it’s not hard to google ‘AI news today’ and see what’s going on in the world of AI, or go on Reddit/quora/Lemmy/whatever other boards for discussion they got, and read about people’s experiences etc. That’s how I know how other people are using it.

LLM’s and machine learning (as it is used today) and all other types/forms of AI.

Not really sure about your point of ‘shunning’. Nobody’s shunning AI, we’re having/encouraging/engaging in constructive debate about the nature of this. How can we shun something we haven’t fully scrutinised either by research or discussion?

AI with its promises of things getting better and “love bombing” and other stuff rather looks like long forgotten classmate adding you on socials to get you into some MLM.

It’s not some closed community that cults usually are, there are almost no secrets to how AI works, or at least there are no claims that people in there know something most people don’t (which is characteristic to quasi-religious movements like MAGA).

It’s simply a big shiny new tech, that is on the height of its hype cycle, that is about to plunge into a valley of despair, which will filter out AI use cases, leaving actually legitimate ones and removing bullshit ones (and since there are so many of bullshit ones - that makes a bubble out of it).

It’s “crypto bros all over again” mixed with social media-like engagement optimization.

I think you’re attributing too much to the underlying LLMs (which are just bots) and not enough to its delivery, the con artists hyping the cults, and the sycophancy engineering they’ve done on purpose.

It’s people ultimately behind the cult. Not technology.

That’s not to say that technology isn’t utilised by these people though, including potentially lauding AI as a false god in some sort of subtle marketing strategy potentially

It’s just a product of optimizing for engagement maximization at all costs, like tons of other products from Big Tech.

Much of the sycophancy and love-bombing you see in modern LLMs comes from RLHF:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinforcement_learning_from_human_feedback

They’re engineered as technical tools, and outputs humans prefer are selected in training.

…The problem is that Big Tech wrapped what’s really glorified autocomplete or a coding/text processing bot, optimized to please humans with its output, in extensive scaffolding to make it look like an omniscient oracle. Every word that comes out of Altman’s mouth is textbook cult language, and they engineer that “vibe” into the system prompt and RAG system.

Take the raw LLM weights by themself, run in a purely technical context… and it’s obviously not a god. Even to the average person, its more like fancy spellcheck; a tool.

It’s all the dressing-up, hype, deliberate obfuscation, the positive feedback loops and such that turn them into a machine that can perpetuate a cult.

What I’m trying to say is it’s not “runaway technology.”

    It’s people.

It’s people doing this on purpose.

“Blaming” the LLM weights instead dilutes their responsibility. Every ounce of blame is on people like Altman or Modi, but THEY want you to think it’s out of their control, hence the whole quasi religious angle.

I'm reasonably sure they'd say the same about us, honestly.

I don't fucking accept that, that's like saying cigarettes have valid medical uses. Gen ai is bad, I'm not going to sugar coat it for anyone. It's a dead end: Apple came to that conclusion years ago, it's guaranteed to hallucinate according to OpenAI scientists, and other groups have thouroughly made the link between gen ai use and psychotic and antisocial behavior. The dangers do not just outweigh the benefits, they drown them out so much it is hard to measure if any benefits even exist, and there's no reason to try to de-skill yourself just for the possibility of going insane, being subjected to propaganda and racist/sexist biases, or being spied on and having every chat come back up during your divorce hearings.

There are plenty of other promising avenues of research for ai, llms just suck.
