Why is "shutdown computer" an option in controller layouts? I don't even think that should be an option.

It's for people who use Steam in Big Picture Mode as a console replacement, so that they can shut off their PC without getting up from the couch.

I thought of that, but even then it seems not worth it. At least it should be gated behind a "hold N seconds while the overlay warns you're about to shutdown"

Or just trigger a power options overlay where you manually confirm shutdown

This is actually an option, the function is there, you can bind it to whatever button you want and however you want, long press, short press, double press. It's very powerful tool.

  • Actual answer: steam provides the flexibility to rebind basically whatever you want to a controller input in order to make abstruse keyboard/mouse commands available via controller. It's less that there's a "shutdown computer" option in a dropdown menu and more that some ingenious prankster realized they could bind the windows shutdown keyboard shortcut.

Gives me flashbacks to Goldsrc dedicated server operators sending eject CD or Play CD commands to clients which was possible for some reason.

We used to embed sub7 server in the Office executables on every workstation we'd use so we could do shit like this when someone else was using it later. The high school network admin hated my friend group.
