Isn't the idea to decentralize?

We are decentralized, according to FediDB, the Fediverse has 14.2 million accounts. Lemmy+Piefed+Mbin have 551k users. Obviously we could be better spread out, but the fact that there's no instance at 50% share is already pretty nice.

And if a big instance enshittified, it would be drastically easier for everyone to leave it compared to convincing people to leave Reddit or something. You just export/import your user settings and you get to keep the communities you've subscribed to and block, and the users you've blocked.

All those users are from different instances. That's decentralized.

If this community goes down or is otherwise not viable anymore, users can easily find another, similar community, while not having to switch to a different platform or instance or whatever themselves. That's how this is supposed to work.

Decentralization with different larger communities on different instances, with community members from all kinds of different instances, baby!

It only works if you can bring your block list with you. That's the only thing of value attached to my profile.

No. The idea is to have the constant looming threat of decentralization to keep the centralized system in check.

Except in this there's really not a lot of benefit when it comes to centralization so it would be better to decentralize to make sure no single instance becomes too big. I'd say world is already a bit too big because 90% of my subscribed feeds would be gone if world no longer federated with Piefed. World has significant sway on our side of the fediverse because smaller instances will probably feel dead (or turn into an echo chamber) if world won't federate with them.

No, it isn't. People will refuse to leave, just as we've seen with FB, Reddit, etc. Lemmy.world has already enshitified from where it started, and from the position of nearly every other instance, yet people like you are still there. That's proof against your argument.

I came here after lemmy.ml said it was shutting down. Idk what happened a with that but world seemed stable enough to not have that problem

actual question: How is Lemmy.ml functionally different than Lemmy.world?

.ml has a lot of pro-Russia, pro-China types and criticism of either country can lead to a quick ban.

Functionally, there is no difference. Both run the same software, tho the versions may slightly differ as the devs, who run .ml, push updates.

For a functionally different experience try Mbin/Kbin (I forget which is the current), or Piefed. Piefed is similar to Lemmy with some quality of life improvements. Kbin/Mbin is a cross between “tweet” style posts, “blog” style posts like tumblr, and Reddit type posts.

.world is doing its best to replicate every bad thing about reddit (starting with powermods) while avoiding every positive aspect it might have once had. I'm sure its admins have constant wet dreams about the day they can go public and sell it for parts.

.ml is trying to pretend it's not lemmygrad by putting on glasses with a fake nose and a moustache.

Both are toxic and harmful to the fediverse.

Similar things can be said of most other “big” instances to a lesser extent (including the one I'm in, but I'm too lazy to move out for a third time).

Frankly, the only instance I'd trust to not be politically compromised is fedinsfw, and I already got bit once by lemmynsfw's incompetent management (when they lost control of it to a rogue admin and it closed for months), so I'm not going back there.

Next time I have to move I'll be rolling my own private instance, or quitting altogether.

You might try one of the .zips. Very competent admins who defederate from next to nothing, leaving the choice up to the user (mainly as opt-in blocks, with just ~3 opt-out ones iirc).

If you roll your own though then probably PieFed/PyLova would be much easier than Lemmy to deploy and manage.

Regardless of how the most controversial communities on Lemmy.world decide to be, it's good to spread out and decentralize.

How are you so unable to use your brain?
The function and idea of decentralisation isn't to evenly distribute users across every instance, some instances being much larger than others is and extremely obvious thing.
