A ton of people, mainly leftist, have an issue where their ideology starts and ends at "AMERICA BAD"

I think Hasan is a good example of this as he has defended China and Russia and didn't stop to think about why. Is Russia good? Is China good?

If you do defend them, whatever. But don't do it without a good grounding as to why. You can never define yourself by only saying what you're not.

You first need to find out what you ARE. Who are you? What do you stand for? What are your grounding, foundational beliefs and values?

Not that he needs defending, but I do think Hasan does have a more nuanced opinion on China regarding authoritarian and imperialist practices based on more recent interviews, but he doesn't incorporate that into his mainstream persona so people think he likes more than their coherent economic policy and even worse people seem to feel more justified in holding positions excusing authoritarianism and imprialism if it means a communist economic agenda is enacted.

How much of a leftist can one really be if they are stuck comparing the "quality" of nation states without mentioning that they shouldn't exist at all.

Lmao. Nah, that's the (obviously, painfully true) statement where you already stop listening because you don't want to admit it's true without a thousand caveats. I've never met a socialist who couldn't elaborate, rightly or wrongly, in their many issues with political systems they support, let alone those they don't.
