Context:
Phenylketonuria is a condition where the body cannot process phenylalanine, an essential amino acid found in dietary proteins. Because phenylalanine isn't converted into tyrosine, excess amounts build up in the bloodstream while tyrosine levels drop, making tyrosine an essential daily supplement. This buildup causes high blood concentrations of phenylalanine to overload th blood-brain barrier transporter, effectively starving the brain of another vital amino acid - tryptophan.
