Any used SFF PC will blow away a pi5, even something with like a 4th gen Intel chip. Form factor is roughly the size of a DVD case instead of a deck of cards like a pi, but as long as that not an issue you should be fine getting something cheap and used.

There are many WAY cheaper rpi clone boards these days, although I don't really know how far the "way cheaper" part is going to go in today's economy...

Though less than a year ago, there were boards that are basically as powerful as 10 year old laptops for <$100 on the market.

Sometimes the parts are glued to the board at the factory and start vibrating later if the glue comes loose. Silicon carne is an ok fix in that situation, I think. I guess sometimes the parts themselves are faulty. This isn't really my area.

An 8gb pi 4 is around $160 now, ouch.

Thanks for the info and the good laugh! Does that mean that a vibrating capacitor or indictor is not necessarily faulty and that it is then OK to dampen to the sound? I rarely take painkillers unless I'm sure that it won't conceal a larger problem, if you catch my drift.😅

At today's prices? Buy a soldering iron and watch some youtubes about how to use it.

Added: sometimes you can put a blob of silicone sealant over the vibrating component, to dampen the vibration. Lots of consumer electronics already has that. If you watch any AvE youtubes, he likes to call the stuff "silicon carne".

Thanks. The Pi quirks are a little frustrating to me, although I know they’re for reasons / benefits.

I’ve updated the post with a solution, but since I find it easier to find solutions for Debian than RaspberrypiOS i might actually switch hardware in the future.

Hmm, you’re right — that does seem funky.

Unfortunately I can only speak to the debian side of the house, not the raspbian. But I agree you should be seeing something more recent than that.

It’s dated 2023 though. I’ve received no back ports or updates to kernel in three years it seems. apt is telling me there are no updates regardless.

On my setup the Raspberry Pi repo only offers raspberrypi-kernel 1:1.20230405-1, and apt-cache madison shows no newer kernel versions available. So I appear to be stuck on an older snapshot.

I've been looking at getting a no gui terminal device to use on public transit and such to avoid doom scrolling while still being able to read/write blogs and perhaps to some light programming. This is the first product that seems to be in a good price bracket for what purpose as well.

    Add:

    • an HDMI port

    • a microphone at the bottom and a small speaker at the top

    • a flip-up cover to protect the screen and buttons while it's in my pocket

And then I'd love to have a single device that could replace both phone and laptop and fits in my pocket!
