In a state where LGBTQ adults make up nearly 11 percent of the population, it is important to understand where each candidate stands on issues affecting the community.

El-Sayed, a former public health official and politician, has a record of advocacy and healthcare policy experience related to the LGBTQ community.

He led Detroit’s Ryan White HIV program and partnered with LGBT Detroit to make public health services more open and affirming for LGBTQ residents. Drawing on his public health expertise, he has also committed to restoring federal HIV and PrEP funding gutted by the Trump-Vance administration. He refuses corporate PAC money, has been outspoken in his support for trans rights, and has vowed to be a “lion for LGBTQ+ rights” in the Senate.

One Southeast Michigan school district is banning transgender students from participating in girls sports under a new policy approved by the local board of education this week.

The board for Monroe Public Schools green-lit a policy update Tuesday, Oct. 13, limiting participation in athletics and use of related facilities, including locker rooms, to just “biological females” based on what sex was listed on a student athlete’s birth certificate at the time they were born.

Have you ever considered filing a lawsuit over the potential genital configuration of an underage girl participating in a high school volleyball match over a year ago?

No?

Congratulations! You’re normal! You’re not the most awful person you know!

Unfortunately, Sean Lechner is the most awful guy he knows. He probably stinks very badly, I would assume due to a lack of good hygiene, and also has a bad haircut. It’s safe to assume, as well, that he dresses funny and can’t wink. Truly a miserable oaf of a man!

Jeremy Moss remembers what it felt like to have his future put to a vote.

He was 18 in 2004 when Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and civil unions. The message reached well beyond the legal question on the ballot.

“It was really a signal to me that there’s no future for me here,” Moss told The Advocate.

Sean Lechner and his 16-year-old daughter, Briley Lechner, are suing Monroe Public Schools District, the Michigan High School Athletic Association, the district's superintendent and its athletic director. In their lawsuit filed Oct. 9, they allege school officials concealed from the Monroe High School girls’ varsity volleyball team and their parents that the team would be playing against a transgender girl during its Sept. 9, 2025, match against Ann Arbor Skyline High School, according to the lawsuit.

Members of the board of education agreed to authorize a standstill agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) during their regular meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The resolution, initially discussed in closed session, authorizes a 90-day moratorium, halting any federal enforcement over allegations that AAPS’ policy violates parental rights to access information about students in violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
