If anyone is looking, Elecrow now has a belt clip for the M1/M3/M5. I just ordered it and I'll report on it when it arrives.

Codes now here. Still didnt get all that much time to work on the hop logic. ITS VERY EXPERIMENTAL. DO NOT USE. PROBABLY FOREVER.
It was a fun proof of concept thats for sure.

Im sure someone else can fork and play around with it at some point. It makes a LOT of assumptions (US based, longfast on MT. etc...)
And the screen needs work.
And the hop logic. It just blindly forwards the packet. No reduction in hops. So yeah dont use it. But it was fun to try and see if I could get it working. And it did!
Honestly I dont know how putting more nodes up could ever hurt the network? I mean imagine ALL meshtastic and meshcore repeaters suddenly could do both. It would mean a 20/30% more coverage for meshtastic and like 1000% for meshcore right off the bat. (meshcore has less hardware running around than meshtastic).
That being said im VERY new to developing anything on the heltec/meshtastic/meshcore stuff. So its all very alpha software.
Once I get the hops working ill publish. Its not pretty. And I dont want to be the forever maintainer on this project, I got other things going on. But its a good forkable project right now.
Thanks for the support!
STFU, or help if you are concerned. Link documentation, explain the engineering principles, or explain why it can never be done on Earth.
"Don't do it; you might cause interference," has no place amongst scientists.
NOBODY LISTEN TO THIS MORON.
DO YOUR WEIRD SCIENCE. LEARN THE LIMITS OF YOUR WORLD.
Hey, @mesa. Intefere, fucker.
Not touched in months. Would be cool to not have to flash between them or put up dual nodes. Or find a protocol that fixes both deficiencies. (Pretty sure reticulum also has a problem with peer announcing when the scale gets extreme)
I would highly recommend that you not do this as it is likely to cause more problems.
Instead I would just setup two separate nodes
Will do!
Im hoping to deal with that with #2. Worst case i just put a bit of a delay, wait for two or more, remove. Or if it doesnt hear anything them send. The hop logic isnt there yet. I litterally just made it today. Im going to get the rtlsdr set up and do some testing.
I would be very careful about deploying this as you need to be mindful not to cause interference. If you just blindly retransmit you are likely to actually reduce range in some cases as you will prevent nodes farther away from sending
Keep us posted.
In my opinion, tastic works best in impromtu areas like camp sites and within your local city. You can get great sensor data for example.
core seems to work best if you have a lot of local infastructure and want to get a signal out of your local city.
Both work well "down the street" or line of sight. Same protocol and similar/identical hardware more of the time.
Honestly I hope we dont become like the meshtastic community on reddit. They went so far as to start banning people just saying meshcore. I get it, if we get flooded with articles it does kinda suck. But I would hope up/down voting would help. Everyone trying out these devices is a good thing.
Im VERY glad we are NOT like that is all im saying.
It's still limited to 7 hops instead of meshcore's 64, and has no routing, so it floods all nodes every time.
Thanks
Meshtastic works well in busy environments as long as you are on a faster channel like Mediumfast or even something like shortturbo
Do you know of any meshcore communities? The last time i looked i couldnt find any.
I recently got into Meshtastic and I am still learning. Yesterday I sent my first public message and the Wio Tracker L1 Pro reported 12 nodes have been seen. I did not get any response yet. I have it in Client mode and is not always online because I have no signal inside anyway.
I may can get access to a roof of a building <1km away and install a node as a repeater. Would that help relaying messages even if the other mobile node connects to the mesh at a later time? Is that even possible, saving messages for later? What would MeshCore change in this scenario? I am still new to all this and don't know any differences about them.
The next thing is waiting for a friend to receive there meshtastic device so that we can play with it and learn more about it.
Wrong community. That being said, unlike meshtastic, having too many repeaters in the area is not an issue on meshcore.
The community gets split several ways, which is frustrating considering how we depend on each other. When you choose any of the other 9 available radio settings you are in an entirely different effective community. https://meshtastic.org/docs/overview/radio-settings/ Default is long-fast, but I think when I was in the Bay area last, Medium-Fast had the most nodes. https://bayme.sh/
That's just Meshtastic.
If you want to play around with meshcore you need to flash your device differently or have more hardware. Meshcore feels more solid, tools helping you link. If you want to tinker with how far you can get a signal or research how best to improve infrastructure, meshcore is great. I particularly like the direct ping tool and the coverage estimation based on elevation maps.
Haven't tried Reticulum but I think it might be the most practical if you actually need data.
TL;DR - if lemmy and ingress had a child
I see. So is the use case like a mesh hosted group chat for protests etc?
Thry can send emoji...
For actual data you need Reticulum
Only text. I saw someting about images, but very small ones and not with the oficial firmware.
What sort of data can meshtastic and meshcore transfer?
Unless the status quo changes, the OP has the two options I outlined. This isn't rude or mean, it is reality.
Not only is two factor authentication popular in every major platform its adoption is increasing...
Your examples are actually the opposite of what is happening here. A more accurate example would be someone still trying to use a horse in a modern city. In a limited situation and location, you may do it to a very small success. But you will give up almost all functionality in a modern society.
