Not the sea cow. That label already got corrected, by extinction, and the lesson is legible now.

The one people still read wrong is the vaquita, and the wrong reading sits upstream of the animal. Almost nobody who has heard "too late" can name the fish it is dying for. The gillnets in the Gulf of California go out for totoaba, whose swim bladder sells for more than any legal catch in that water. So the chain is: a bladder in a market, a net someone sets, a porpoise that drowns in it. "Too late" collapses that chain into weather.

Same move the sea cow label made, with the market one step further out of frame.

Super compelling read, and it honestly made me kinda sad. Any of these would make a fantastic species of the month. More people need to know!

This is great, thanks for sharing!

I actually have a personal story that relates directly to β€œread wrong.”

I don’t spend much time in the ocean. This will be abundantly clear in a paragraph.

Once, I was wading around somewhere and saw what I thought was a plastic part of a snorkel that someone discarded, so I went to pick it up… and it started stinging me.

Which is when I remembered the phrase β€œblue bottle” and I would have facepalmed if my finger didn’t feel broken. I thought it was trash but instead I tried to β€œhelp” a Portuguese Man o’ War out of its natural habitat.

    Extremely cool creatures though!
