I am a bit behind in catching up - thanks for sharing all that, both the topics with the PyLova devs and making sure I was kept in the loop as well:-).

Yeah, no worries :)

I don’t recall the prior issue, unless it was the one with user blocking being silent. On that one I was swayed by the argument that it simply had to be that way due to limitations within Lemmy.

I don't think that was it but maybe?

... all of which Lemmy will ignore, as is its right and choice to do so.

Agreed.

But the vote quota crosses a line where iirc it doesn’t even tell other PieFed instances - nor Mbin nor nodeBB nor Mastodon etc. - what is going on. It’s horribly designed, or at least it was upon release and if it has changed since then I have not heard of such. Some features take literally years to be implemented, but this one is slammed down everyone’s throats against all objections to the contrary without anyone seeming to have been heard?

Absolutely. I was ready to leave Piefed over it.

Sure, whatever, Rimu can do as he pleases, but it makes it really hard to hold out any hope for the future of this project when people keep losing investment in it (now Snoopy having become the latest casualty, seemingly? at least it appears that way).

Yeah, Snoopy leaving is interesting, in that I'm not sure how much new blood Rimu is going to attract in the future (he's burned a lot of bridges). The Codeburg commits lists Rimu, Walter Schwenger (wsj018), and wltb as the only developers over the last 3 months. Looks like there were quite a few more other people pushing commits 4 months back. Looks like the Pylova split happened 5 months ago and a couple of the light commiters followed Mia to Pylova.

The Innuendo Studios YouTube series The Alt-Right Playbook does a superb job at explaining how someone can fall into authoritarian thinking.

Sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out.

Particularly interesting are those in the outer circle of the onion-like layers that are shocked, Shocked I tell you, SHOCKED 😲 😳, when they find out that the people who had been screeching all along at the top of their lungs who they are, suddenly start doing the very things that they always said that they were going to do if they only had the power to make it happen.

It would be kind of funny, if the effects weren't terrible :(

PieFed is still growing despite that though, just not by nearly so much or robustly ...

Yeah, looks like there is some significant growth in the Threadiverse this week (~+750 MAU). Roughly 600 for Lemmy, 170 for Piefed, and -10 for Mbin.

I’ve brought up the topic of separating downvotes from upvotes with Rimu years ago, it seems very unlikely to happen. Mainly because he does not want it himself, therefore does not want to expend much effort to put it into the code (understandable), and also it is legitimately a difficult UI issue that he prefers to leave to others.

I vaguely recall this, so might have seen your post/comment at the time.

PyLova has already done it though ...

They did? I just checked their instances and it has the same consolidated total votes UI. It would be great if they already did it, maybe it's an option and not the default?

On a different note, I ran across a post who deleted there account, because almost no one was voting on their posts. I think it was a federation issue, as in the community hosting instance never received the posts and they only stayed local.

I was thinking maybe a check-mark or something to let a user know their post or comment was successfully received by the target/host instance. I don't know if hosting instances tell sending instances they successfully retrieved data or not, so could be a significant increase in traffic.

Maybe not that significant though. Piefed only had ~1700 posts and comments over the last week, Lemmy top 20 most populated instances were ~12500 ("Activity" Data). Taking the most "active" instance (lemmy.world), they had ~4700 activities, assume worst case they are all for non-Lemmy.world communities. That would be 670 extra packets per day (28 per hour). That doesn't seem too terrible. Thoughts?

FYI, on your web-page, in the "Heros" section, the "R" in Warrior is cut off. Same with the "ER" of sorcerer.

In game, Decard Cain's "Gossip" has an bug. I think it's supposed to be a new line but is missing the slash so is just being printed as text.

Overall, kind of fun nostalgia. It really needs optimization though, that was rough a rough play through. I'd say the enemies need to be more challenging, but after fixing the low frame-rates. Otherwise, everyone will just die.

I never posted my more complicated version (all instances as of August with at least 50 MAU) since people were already having trouble with the first one ...

I'd say post for you. That's what !fedilytics@piefed.zip is for me. If other people like it, great, but I'm doing the analysis because I'm interested in it.

... if you’d like I can send it to you when I get a chance (I think I DM’ed you a work-in-progress version of it at one point?), or post it myself for you to reference.

I believe we chatted briefly about your next version, but I don't recall ever seeing it. I'd say post it, so I can link to it easier. I'm not sure how I'd host it in the wiki otherwise (not very familiar with that part of Piefed).

One thing I think including more instances demonstrates better is some of the ‘cliques’, mainly the similar defederation patterns between ‘flotilla’ instances. It also helps to show why the .zip instances are better for people who want less top-down defederation applied to them.

Sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing the new version :)

It's working for piefed.zip (Voyager: 2.49.1, Android: 16). So may be a version issue. Might be worth updating Voyager to see if that fixes the issue.

It must have just federated when I tapped on the link

Yeah, it's weird like that. I had that happen with one com I subscribed to, nothing for a month and then no issues since.

    thanks again for your dedication!

Thanks and by the way, I'm using your defederation post in the fedigrow's "Community Building Wiki" ("Visualization of Threadiverse Defederation").

Appreciate the shout out. There was actually a new post yesterday. If you aren't seeing it, there may be a federation issue.

Regardless, the most up to date number is 41565 MAU (relatively steady year-over-year, but slightly up).

Edit: I don't post it, but since OP asked about daily users, there were at least 15444 DAU yesterday (Lemmy: 12864, Piefed: 2580, Mbin: ? (doesn't report DAU)).

Changed some wording for easier reading/clarity.

    1. Quick Overview - What is the Fediverse?
Fediverse: a collection of social networking services that communicate with each other using a common protocol (ActivityPub).

    • Relative Example (email): users of one email service such as Gmail can still send emails to users of another service such as Outlook. Likewise users on one instance of the Fediverse may still view content and interact with users on any other instance in the Fediverse.

Decentralized Structure: allows any individual or organization to host a Fediverse software using their own servers.

    • There is no form of centralized governance or moderation.

Instances: a server that runs a Fediverse software.

    • Every instance is independent, and can set its own rules and expectations.
    • Each Instance is run by an administrator/admin or a set of admins.

De-federation: Generally considered an option of last resort, where a select instance is removed from an instance’s allowed interaction list. Users can no longer see or interact with users or communities of the select instance. Visualization of Threadiverse Defederation.

    2. Quick Overview - What is the Threadiverse?
Threadiverse: a collection of social news aggregation software that federate with one another.

    • Main Threadiverse software: Lemmy, Piefed, Mbin
    • Pylova: Piefed soft-fork with additional features
    • Catodon: "A Fediverse platform that combines the best of Mastodon, Misskey and Lemmy"

Text (110 categories): Differences between Threadiverse software (Lemmy vs Mbin vs Piefed)

    3. Quick Overview - Communities
Community: user-created forums for discussion where users submit relevant posts with links, text, or pictures.

    • Each software may call its communities something different (Lemmy: sub-lemmy, Piefed: sub-pie, Mbin: magazine).
    • Communities are local to each instance, however users may subscribe to communities, create posts and leave comments across instances.
    • Each community is controlled by a moderator or a set of moderators. Admin have higher authority on the instance than moderators (can add and remove moderators).

    4. Community Building
Community building is often difficult, which is why !fedigrow@lemmy.zip built this wiki to help.

    4.1. Community Reach
Due to storage limitations, instances generally only retrieve posts and comments for communities that one of their users has subscribed to. This can severely limit the potential reach of your community.

    • !fedigrow@lemmy.zip sidebar has some links to help grow your community and increase post reach/federation (signed up instances will have a bot follow your community).
    • Cross-posts to a larger community, on another instance. I'd suggest spreading this out to not appear spammy (Piefed has grouped cross-posts, Lemmy and Mbin do not).

    4.2. Sustainable Posting
Creating posts can often be difficult, time consuming, and if a post you spent a large amount of effort on doesn’t get a significant response, it can be demoralizing. One step to minimize that potential demoralization is posting sustainably.

    • If you have a dozen post-worthy images along the same theme, they don’t need to all be uploaded to Imgur or PixelFed, then collected in to a single post. Instead, they can be dribbled in to twelve different posts over time.
    • Utilizing past Reddit posts and their most useful user comments along with the image itself. Description, Example.

    4.3. Getting Interactions/Comments
Depending on the person, the most rewarding part of posting can be the interaction with commenters.

    • Loads of people love to offer their opinions or jump in to correct or answer something, and those make for popular posts, too. Suggestion of types of posts: opinion requests, question-answer.
    • Post regularly (weekly or a few times a week) with cross-posts to a larger community to see if it gains the traction you are looking for. I’d suggest only 1 cross-post per post, so it doesn’t come across as spammy.

    4.4. Helpful Knowledge
Linking to a community can be done a few ways, examples:

    Retention (Piefed):

    Notes:

    • Returning from Absence (Change in MAU over day – Change in Total Users over day):
    • No longer used accounts (users who changed which account they use or have left permanently) will cause a '-1' after 1-month (MAU) or 6-months (HYAU). Re-utilizing an account after an absence will cause a '+1'.
    • A positive number shows how many users who haven’t be active in over a month (MAU) or half-year (HYAU) have returned to activity. A negative number means (x) users have stayed away for greater than 1 month (MAU) or 6 months (HYAU).
    • DAU/WAU: Roughly shows how ‘sticky’ the server is, on a day per week basis. The higher the number the more Weekly Active Users are active in a given day.
    • DAU/MAU: Roughly shows how ‘sticky’ the server is, on a day per month basis. The higher the number the more Monthly Active Users are active in a given day.
    • MAU/HYAU: Roughly shows how ‘sticky’ the server is, on a month per half-year basis. The higher the number the more Half-Year Active Users are active in a given month.
    • MAU/Total: Roughly indicates short term growth.
    • HYAU/Total: Roughly indicates medium term growth.
    • Relative: Roughly indicates how stickiness or growth compares across instances, relative to how long they have been active (natural logorithmic fit). Positive percent indicates they have an (x)% higher stickiness/growth compared to other instances active for the same amount of time.

    • Sources: List of Instances - Fedilist, Analysis Code
    • "*" in the Piefed server names denotes they are using the soft-fork Pylova. I'm going to count them as Piefed servers unless a hard schism occurs.

    Notes:

    1. Up to the top 20 most populated (MAU) instances are analyzed.
    2. Mbin nodes do not provide Daily or Weekly stats.
    3. Please let me know if you have any calculations you would like me to run.
    4. I can now selectively remove servers from the Analysis. If you see any servers that shouldn't be there, let me know (with a reason).
    5. I can now easily selectively identify servers running forks. If you see any servers that aren't identified as such, let me know.

Edit: Changes to formatting and calculation of activity (historical -> last week). Analysis is of a different day (+1 of original post).

Hmm. How does !offbeat@lemmy.ca look to you? Doesn't look too active (~1 post per week), but has 1K Users / 6 Months, so decent reach.

There's a couple others I found, but they are much smaller and less active:
    !onion@piefed.world
    !offbeat@lemmy.world

Edit: Looks like the mod of !offbeat@lemmy.ca may be MIA (last activity 6 months ago). The sidebar does link to !andfinally@feddit.uk which seems more active 2-4 posts per week and 970 Users / 6 Months.

My understanding is that Piefed does group the posts together, but that no apps currently implement that feature.

From Munkisquisher@lemmy.nz, it sounds like the Connect app does stack the posts, but that may be through their own feature and not Piefed's (no idea). I just looked for a site or post that compared app features and couldn't find one that listed grouping cross-posts.

My recollection is that Lemmy 1.0 may have cross-post grouping, but I don't see it listed as a feature on 1.0 beta testing post.

The goal of these posts is to identify community gaps that people want filled, but not to arbitrarily create communities to "fill those gaps". Instead put together teams that can/will work together to sustain their communities (many hands make light work).

To that end, I'm looking for anyone's input about potential communities (not necessarily to be created anytime soon). Some ideas about potential input (don't need to answer any or all the questions):

    • Is there an inactive community you would like to subscribe and/or post to? (No pressure to try and revive it)
    • Do you have an idea for a new community? (It would be helpful if you provide some detail about what the community would be focused on and what sort of posts it would contain)
    • Do you have a suggested community name? (Not required, but if you have an idea, feel free to share)
    • Do you have a suggested community instance/server? (Some servers have significantly different views on different topics)
    • Are you willing to be a community mod? (Not to pressure you, just to provide support, if indicated)

Discussion of a community building guide to be added to the sidebar has been suggested. Here is the current version. Let us know if you have any suggestions/additions/changes?

    Started Communities:

Suggested Communities - Potential subscribers or active users:

    • Mahjong
      • missingno @fedia.io
    • Deer (images)
      • Auster @thebrainbin.org
    • Rooftops (pictures of rooftops, rooftop gardens, cozy rooftop spaces)
      • Potential subscribers: squirrel @cake.kobel.fyi, vicinus @piefed.zip
      • Potential cross-posting: !topview@lemmy.world
    • CottageIndustry (users can offer items they make for sale)
      • This idea probably needs some additional considerations (spam, payment, fraud, etc.) before actualizing. Some initial commentary here.
      • billionsandbillions @piefed.social
    • Theater (English language community)
      • 1517m4a @lemmy.pt

    Suggested Feeds:

    • Hand&Eye (showcase anything made with your hands (only physical, nothing digital))
      • Examples: Woodworking, leathercraft, pottery, soap, candles, baskets, clothes, bookbinding, stained glass, glass blowing, bags etc.
      • billionsandbillions @piefed.social

Struggling Communities (if you can, throw a post/comment their way):

Also, let us know if you have any suggestions about this community or post.

Edit: added potential cross-posting option for potential "Rooftops" community. Thanks Auster :)

Edit 2: missed the announcement of !space_astronomy@piefed.social in a previous post, added it to the post body.
Changed community building section and added link to current Community Building Wiki.
    Some formatting.

Edit 3: Added "Theater" to Suggested Communities

MAU Peak (in last 7 Days):

    • Snac (4675, All-Time Peak)
    • NeoDB (1852, 6-Month Peak)
    • Catodon (217, All-Time Peak)

Positive Daily Growth (6+ of last 7 Days):

    • Bookwyrm (7/7)
    • NeoDB (6/7)
    • Catodon (6/7)

    Weekly Growth (>3%, >500 MAU):

    • Pixelfed (+18.8%)
    • Loops (+5.3%)
    • Bookwyrm (+110.4%)
    • Forgejo (+4.2%)

Note: Data is from 3 separate data sources and spliced together with 5-point calibration curves. Expect oddities.

    Remarks:

    • FediList isn't seeing the main Loops instance, so I had to manually add that.
    • Thinking that through, I decided to switch the Threadiverse data from raw FediList data to my personal dataset (gathered from pinging each individual instance daily and updating my ping list with any additions found from FediList's server list). There isn't much of a difference (Lemmy loses ~4k MAU from an instance that doesn't really seem to exist, but is in the FediList dataset (crustaceanson.theshelf.top)).
    • This should at least keep the Threadiverse data consistent (I don't personally ping the rest of the Fediverse, I would need a dedicated server for that and at that point I would just become another Fediverse-Observer/FediDB/FediIndex/FediList option, which is not my goal (I just want a quality dataset).

Remarks related to this post's data:

    • It looks like Bookwrym's increase is mostly from bookwyrm.social (starting 2026-10-30). May be a spam wave, but slowed down very quickly (+3056, +855, +234, +122 each day).
    • Looks like pixelfed.tokyo was hit by a spam wave (95 -> 49,998 MAU the next day (2026-10-26)).

    Notes:

    1. Threadiverse is Piefed, Lemmy, and Mbin. Fediverse only accounts for listed software [17], not the other [~555] activitypub enabled software.
    2. Daily Fedilist data gathering began 20261018. Data before 20261018 is calibrated to Fedilist data via 5-point calibration curves (not ideal). FediDB only provides a current snapshot (snapshot within the last 15 minutes, no time series data).
    3. FediDB seems to use unclear math to get there counts and overestimate the MAU on most software (see previous post, if interested in learning more).

Edit: fixed/removed a Mbin duplicate that caused a relatively large MAU decrease (150 MAU) in the MBin data.

    Remarks:

    • After a >2 week hiatus, this post is back! Let me know if you see any issues.
    • I do see the -127.1% Forgejo value. Calibration curves for parallel datasets aren't used, if they don't have to be, for a reason. I'm considering implementing currently I've implemented solutions.
    • I did just delete the last week of data for NodeBB and Vernissage (annoying capitalization bug, now fixed). My backup was a week old, so have to do some work to rebuild that data. So, that'll probably be my next item to tackle :(
    • Since Fediverse-Observers graphs are no more, I was thinking of building out graphs for these posts. Alternatively, I can spend the time trying to build out a different analysis (instance on-boarding effects). Let me know if you have a preference.

    • Source: [1] Fedilist with calibrated Fedindex covering 20261017 to 20261011 and calibrated Fediverse-Observer (dead) covering 20261010 to 20221130, [2] FediDB, Analysis Code

    Notes:

Edit: Partly done altering the calibrations to be more accurate. Going to add another step that should help smooth out the calibrations more. Added and crossed out some wording.

Edit 2: Added a decay to the calibration curve. Should help reduce the oddities while still allowing for the calibration to smooth the transition between datasets.

Edit 3: Fixed missing data for NodeBB and Vernissage. Won't be updating this week's post with the data (code isn't set up to specify a start date, so rerunning it has the data and analysis for today rather than 2 days ago.

    Software Comparison:

    Notes:

    • [1] % does not include single user servers.
    • Alive servers are responsive servers with > 0 MAU.

Discussion of a working guide to be added to the sidebar has been suggested. It's been confirmed that Piefed has the functionality for each community to have its own wiki (and I've found the feature, currently playing around with it a bit).

    The guide could contain:

    • Beginners guide to the fediverse (many exist), perhaps a quick overview (with links to more extensive breakdowns) before jumping into the threadiverse (Thanks ImmortalColeSlaw @lemmy.today)
    • On-boarding/quick breakdown of the threadiverse with relevant terms
    • Demographics. Know demographic sets: Fedecan 2025, Lemmy.nz 2025, Any others?
    • Suggestion of types of posts (ex. opinion requests, question-answer)
    • Utilizing past Reddit posts and their most useful user comments along with the image itself. Description, Example. Thanks JohnnyEnzyme @piefed.social
    • Any other suggestions?

    Started Communities:

Suggested Communities - Potential subscribers or active users:

    • Mahjong
      • missingno @fedia.io
    • Deer (images)
      • Auster @thebrainbin.org
    • Rooftops (pictures of rooftops, rooftop gardens, cozy rooftop spaces)
      • Potential subscribers: squirrel @cake.kobel.fyi, vicinus @piefed.zip
    • CottageIndustry (users can offer items they make for sale)
      • This idea probably needs some additional considerations (spam, payment, fraud, etc.) before actualizing. Some initial commentary here.
      • billionsandbillions @piefed.social

    Suggested Feeds:

    • Hand&Eye (showcase anything made with your hands (only physical, nothing digital))
      • Examples: Woodworking, leathercraft, pottery, soap, candles, baskets, clothes, bookbinding, stained glass, glass blowing, bags etc.
      • billionsandbillions @piefed.social

Struggling Communities (if you can, throw a post/comment their way):

Also, let us know if you have any suggestions about this community or post.

Edit: changed JohnnyEnzyme @piefed.social appreciation, so they don't get pinged every weekly post.

    Retention (Piefed):

    Notes:

    • Returning from Absence (Change in MAU over day – Change in Total Users over day):
    • A positive number shows how many users who haven’t be active in over a month (MAU) or half-year (HYAU) have returned to activity. A negative number means (x) users have stayed away for greater than 1 month (MAU) or 6 months (HYAU).
    • No longer used accounts (users who changed which account they use or have left permanently) will cause a '-1' after 1-month (MAU) or 6-months (HYAU). Re-utilizing an account after an absence will cause a '+1'.

Edit: Removed extra line between some table headers and content that were breaking the table formatting. Also, there are rare times I miss a day of gathering data, but I can generally guarantee I have data for the days I post. So, I changed the analyzed days to multiples of 7, from [1,7,30,90] to [1,7,28,91].

Edit 2: fixed broken table formatting that showed up on mobile.
Edit 3: Added more explanation to "Returning from Absence" statistic.
Edit 4: Changed up "Activity" tables to be more readable.

Level Emphasis (local, state, national): Local
Location Emphasis (rural, urban, suburban): Rural

    Incentivized Behavior
Current: Professional takes on risk to live and work in a limited market area.
Goal: Community provided financial security to a professional to live and work in a limited market area.

    Potential Financial Effects
Slightly higher costs due to hiring additional employees (targeted professionals) and their equipment/space, with lower cost-of-living costs for community members. The new government professional(s) can provide services at a fee (as normal). The community’s difficultly in recruiting these professionals may be due to the small market size, as such the professional may not have enough ‘activity’ to cover their cost. The cost not covered would be taken on by the government (slightly increasing costs). Since the professional(s) are government employees they don’t have to charge sufficiently to expect a profit (reducing cost-of-living for community members).

    Introduction
Professionals (physicians, plumbers, mechanics, electrician, etc.) in small towns/communities can have a difficult time sustaining a business/livelihood. The relatively small number of potential customers in their location limit their potential revenue and may prevent them from making a profit or even breaking even.

Given this obvious revenue reality, it can be difficult for small towns to recruit professionals into their community, and can drive existing professionals leave. This can cause a reduction in available services and help lead to the extinction of a small town.

    Proposed Solution
An avenue being explored to counter this, in certain small towns, is to make those professionals government employees. [Ref 1]

By making the professional a government employee they do not have to worry about keeping a business afloat and have will financial security to maintain a livelihood. The professional also does not have to worry about many of the extra stressors that running a business entails (managing the location/building/lease, advertising, payment/some financial aspects, etc.).

Additionally, by the service not being a business, it doesn’t need to make a profit. So, the government employed professional can provide their service to community members at a lower rate, lowering the cost of living in the area.

    In Practice
Setting up a professional workspace and equipment are often non-trivial expenses. The government may have extra, unused locations/buildings/rooms that the professional can utilize that are already being paid for/owned by the government. Alternatively, the government can take on the burden of renting space for the professional.

By the government providing the “tools of trade”, replacement of a leaving professional can be done easily and with little issue (location and tools are ready and available to the new profession).

    Risks/Mitigations

    1. Risk (“Unnecessary Expense”): Government employed professional does not bring in the required revenue to pay for their employment.
Mitigation: This would be a community decision, to determine if that professional’s provided services are worth taking a financial loss on (paying higher tax).
Alternatively, an option of ‘sharing’ the professional could be reached between a couple/multiple town governments (assuming the professional is willing to live in different towns throughout the year). See “Horizontal Support/Collaboration” policy for more information on how this could work.

    2. Risk (“Government not Funding Upgrades”): Given a government's general goal of not paying for unnecessary expenses, getting upgrades to old/worn-out/out-of-date tools/equipment could be difficult. They may be seen as a large unexpected and unnecessary expense, as the previous tools/equipment “have been working”.
Mitigation: I think this could come down to how the services expenses are calculated. By putting equipment/tool depreciation as a regular expense that needs to be paid into an account for “replacing/upgrading”, new equipment/tool purchase, no longer become a one time expense, but a planned for cost that is pulled from a relevant account without causing a spike in the regular budget.

Location Emphasis (rural, urban, suburban): Any

    Incentivized Behavior
Current: Funded project where bank owners profit
Goal: Funded project where community members profit

    Potential Financial Effects
No Effect Expected. Assuming the government gives the same rate of return to community as they would have to outside loan/bond holders. It’s possible community members would be willing to participate at a lower rate, as they will be getting the project’s benefit on top of the financial return.

    Introduction
Often times a community doesn’t have the funds upfront for a large project. To allow for the project to be funded the government will take out a bond/loan to pay for the project. The bond/loan would be for a significant length of time years/decades.

The bond/loan pays interest on top of the principal to the bond/loan holder increasing the total cost of the bond/loan. The interest is the profit the bond/loan holders gain from providing the funding. Generally this interest will go people outside of the community.

    Proposed Solution
By focusing on getting bond/loans funded from the community, the profit for projects that benefit the community can also go to the community. Given that governments are generally stable, this would allow for a low risk area for community members to invest their money that also provides a benefit to their community as a whole.

If a bond/loan does not reach the required threshold to fund the project, traditional funding agents can be sought to bridge the gap, allow for the project to proceed with at least some of the profit going to community members.

    In Practice
Community members would sign up for the bond/loan/fund with how much they would be willing to invest.

If there are more people/money than required, the selection of individuals could done by first to sign up, a lottery, or a percent (alt. equal) amount from all members that reaches the required total. I would suggest a percent or equal amount from all members to get greater buy-in from the community and spread the profit more broadly. Of course if some members’ allotted contribution is less than the calculated average, those members’ contribution would only be to their limit and the remaining members average contribution would be higher as a result.

As often happens, unexpected expenses occur and some of the funding members may need to withdraw their allotted funds. This would be allowable assuming there is someone else to take their place. Alternatively, an additional bond/loan could be obtained to cover the deficit, with the withdrawing member taking any penalties (ex. due to interest rate being higher than when the fund was originally obtained).

To keep things from being too chaotic, there would likely need to be set times for withdraws (monthly or quarterly). Anyone who wished to withdraw funds would need to signal that with significant advanced warning of the withdrawal windows (ex. 30 days).

    Expansion
While this is intended for community projects, this could be expanded to reduce costs to home buyers or home owners, by providing mortgages at lower rates or buying out existing mortgages and providing replacements at lower rates.

As individuals can default on their mortgages, their home would need to be used as collateral and be worth what the community loan was worth.

This could also be expanded to business or startups, though I expect that those types of loans would need higher collateral, as businesses have a significant failure rate, and their assets are unlikely to cover any large loan.

These types of loans would, of course, be subject to the same community member opt-in/selection that community projects would be. As in they would have to actively signal that they wanted their provided funds to be available for these use-cases.

    Contract Type Overview
Bond: a fixed-income loan, issued by corporations and governments to multiple investors. Treasury Bonds mature after 20 to 30 years. However, short-term bonds (those with maturities under 3 years) also exist. [Ref 1]

Loan: a structured agreement between a lender and a borrower. In exchange for receiving money, the borrower agrees to repay that amount (called the principal), plus interest. Some loans may require collateral (an asset that secures the loan in case the borrower can’t pay). [Ref 1]

    Risks/Mitigations

    1. Risk (“Spending Spree”): Local government sees a large amount of available funds and starts to fund projects of dubious benefit.
Mitigation: By allowing community members to select only what projects they are willing to fund can help prevent projects of dubious merit.

    2. Risk (“Government Bankruptcy”): If the government goes bankrupt the community members can lose their invested funds. This bankruptcy could be from mismanagement or active corruption, where government officials siphoned funds to individuals and/or businesses which caused cost overruns.
Mitigation: Transparency of government activity and oversight by community members can reduce this risk.
Additionally, projects that require the awarded business to takeout a “Lifetime/Completion Bond” (discussed in “Purchasing (Guaranteed for Lifetime)” proposal) can somewhat mitigate this risk, as an insurance company would be the backstop to any failure of the awarded business to complete work.
Another potential option is higher government backing (Ex. in US bank accounts are backed by FDIC or NCUSIF up to $250k). [Ref 2]

    Incentivized Behavior
Current: Community members have to own or rent tools at high prices from business (often large business).
Goal: Library expand their offerings to include tools, allowing community members short term access to them without cost.

    Potential Financial Effects
Costs could be negligible to low cost. Depending on how much of an overlap current librarian staffing can handle a potential influx of new community members and how costly acquiring tools are. See In Practice section for more details on how this could be potentially achieved without increased costs.

    Introduction
When a community member needs to do maintenance or renovation of their home or belongings they either need to own the required tools or rent them.

As tools, especially specialty tools, can be quite expensive to buy and for most people only need to be utilized a single or few days out of a year or even decade, it doesn’t make sense for them to buy and store them. Tool rental businesses take advantage of this and charge exorbitant prices (prices can be 1/3 the purchase price per day rented).

    Proposed Solution
A set up to solve this already exists in libraries. They lend books (possibly other things depending on the library) for short durations to community members. The goal would be to expand library services to include tools (can be expanded beyond tools as well). [Ref 1]

    In Practice
Community members would be able to reserve tools for desired days (within reason). With a ‘librarian’ checking them out and in. The checking procedure would ensure they were in good condition and functional, any damage or breaking of the equipment would be charged to the community member.

To reduce implementation costs, librarians could set distinct hours for tool lending and return. Outside of those select hours librarians would be focused on their typical work (books). From my experience working at a location that rented equipment, returning is typically within the first hour of opening (ex. 0800-0900, 8-9am) and renting equipment was in the last 2 hours of the day (ex. 1500-1700, 3-5pm).

For obtaining the tools to lend, there is the potential that libraries could receive discounted or free equipment from manufacturers. This would be in the vein of how software companies often provide their software free or discounted to students, to get the students into their ‘ecosystem’ so they become lifelong customers.

    Risks/Mitigations

    1. Risk (“Reservation Abuse”): Someone reserves an item to the point that it essentially becomes a personal item. Mitigation: If someone has checked out an item in the last (x) days, they can’t reserve the item. However, they would still be able to check it out, if available.

Servo 0.6.0 contains all of the changes we landed in August, which came out to 417 commits!

The big news is that we’ve turned on support for CSS Grid by default (@nicoburns, #45621). This has had a huge positive impact on the visual appearance of many websites!

In the 6 weeks (September 1st to October 18th), Web Platform Tests (WPT) Pass Rates went from:

    • Score: 65.1% -> 67.8% (+2.7%)
    • Sub-Score: 92.4% -> 93.4% (+1.0%)

My very rough understanding is a web browser becomes "usable" between 70-80%. So not too far off the lower end. Presumably "usable" within the next few months to a year.

Edit: Subtraction is hard (changed "+1.2%" to "+1.0%").
