I had a kernel panic and am trying to find some beginner level help for that and possibly updating BIOS to help fix it. Linux Forums, while trying to be helpful are assuming I know anything and I'm just getting in way over my head. Suggestions are either so complicated and vague I can't follow them, or merely saying why those suggestions won't work. It takes me hours of research to try and understand how to make every command work. I'm feeling desperate and freaked out my work laptop is going to break. I could just be flipping out over nothing but I don't understand what is going on.

I have a Legion Pro 5 16ARX8 - Type 82WM Running Linux mint.

Here's an example of errors messages I'm getting in dmesg:

[ 6.035147] amdgpu 0000:05:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* dc_dmub_srv_log_diagnostic_data: DMCUB error - collecting diagnostic data [ 10.042930] amdgpu 0000:05:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* dc_dmub_srv_log_diagnostic_data: DMCUB error - collecting diagnostic data [ 0.276297] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol [\_SB.PCI0.PB2], AE_NOT_FOUND (20251212/dswload2-162) [ 0.276304] ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, During name lookup/catalog (20251212/psobject-220)

Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: Got the laptop cleaned and got 4 passes on memtest. The tech said, the 3 years of cat hair and dust was likely the culprit in the Kernel panic during a large file copy paste. I will be getting it professionally cleaned regularly and will learn how to copy/paste 400 gb of data more responsibly in the future. Thankyou everyone who lent a hand, you helped during a very stressful few days.

to make sure we are on the same page. I open Update Manager, click on View then on Linux Kernels.

in there i have many kernels.

I have for example

6.17 and when i click on that it shows

6.17.0-42 End of Life

6.17.0-41 End of Life

and many others that show End of Life.

I just watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKQ0Ctu3NZs&t=172s and he said any of the kernels that show End of Life I should remove them. Is that always true or is there a reason to keep those kernels?

I can use the package and say update all. And then everything currently installed gets updated. going to use libreoffice as an Example. I’ve heard that if you update in a different way you get a newer version of Libre office.

This is really two questions here:

  1. Does the package Manager just run the most stable version of Libre office?
  2. Is there a better way to update my programs using the package ? Even if it’s a terminal window command?

I’m fairly new to Linux, so these might be kind of strange questions to those who are familiar with it. The more information you can give me the better also remember me like I’m five please

Edit: This isn’t just about just libreoffice This is about pretty much all the programs in the package manager. I’m also curious, is there a single command that I can use to update all the programs even if it’s in the terminal window. Or do I get more stable programs if I stay with the package manager?

Mint & Amiga (lemmy.world)

So, I grew up with Amiga computers as a kid. I run Mint on my ancient laptop and it works beautifully. I’d like to see if I can get an Amiga emulator or OS on there to duplicate the look and feel of the Amiga OS. Maybe even play a few old games. What is the best way to do that?

Right now it defaults to

Brother HL-L3300CDW

when it should default to

eSCL Brother HL-L3300CDW series

how do i fix this? I'm assuming it's editing a configuration file somewhere. Just not sure where.

Sorry about the poor image quality.

I should clarify that I only have one physical scanner/printer. Document Scanner is just defaulting to the wrong option in the scanner software.

I’m having an issue in linux mint 22.3 cinnamon where the GUI locks up but audio still plays and the mouse cursor still moves. The solution is to press ctrl+alt+f1 to take me to a terminal and then press ctrl+alt+f7 to go back to the GUI. Then everything works fine. Forgive me, I do not know what to call the terminal when accessing ctrl+alt+f1 other than tty1.

I also have an issue where when using a browser (librewolf / waterfox / zen) and using the pop out video window, sometimes over time it will lock in the main browser window and the solution is to minimise and restore the window. Sounds related.

I am new to linux and not sure where to start. I think there is something up with the cinnamon desktop environment but I do not know what. Hardware has been stress tested, multiple components, multiple days. I think it is a software issue but could be wrong, that is why I am asking for help.

Any help / thoughts much appreciated.

Thank you.

As a matter of good data hygiene, I've moved my home folder unofficially to a second drive and click-dragged folders into the left MyComputer panel.

On a fresh boot, those folders have an orange exclamation mark on them. If I click, I get a "Could not find [location] error."

When I click on the drive in Nemo (Under My Devices), the exclamation points clear and the shortcuts are accessible.

I don't think it's JUST Nemo, because Asunder also can't find a folder (and it annoyingly reassigns the folder when it does).

The drive is set to automount at startup and be visible in UI with no additional authorization.

This could go in a lot of sections (privacy, open source, Linux, degoogle...) but I thought it best to put it here.

In the last couple of weeks I've given a new lease of life to a ten year old Lenovo Windows 10 machine, and a six year old Chromebook, by installing Mint on both (Mint XCFE on the latter as its not as beefy as the laptop).

Both now run really fast, are running on wonderful open source software, and are more secure than ever. Needless to say I am pleased to have nuked Microsoft and Google from the equation.

That's all really. A huge thank you to Linux Mint and all who sail in her. I appreciate each of you.

❤️

Edit: Superwide is work machine. Can't get away from Windows on that unfortunately.

Edit: Thanks everyone that tried to help. I will reinstall the OS, sinse the problemm looks a bit more complex then I initially thought 🥲

Hello all,

I'm currently running Mint 22.3 Cinnamon and I would like to be able to rearrange my drive order in "Devices" section of Nemo file browser. It seems to be using alphabetical order at the moment, I'm not sure if it's even possible but any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Specifically, I would like to move my "work" dive to the top of the list above my audio visual drive as that's my main drive I work on, and the removable "AV" drive just holds a temp pool of clips for editing.

Thanks in advance!

I've had this issue since the first day I started using linux about 15 years ago. Always the same issue, transfers start fine and slows down to a crawl, only on USB sticks.

The USB sticks are fine, I can make bootable sticks in five minutes but if I copy a file of similar size to them is half an hour and then five to ten more minutes waiting to be able to safely remove the drive.

There are dozens of forum posts, some blaming the drives, others the GUI, dirty buffers, outdated kernels, fastboot for some reason. Others marked as solved without a solution because it magically solved itself.

Issues with auto-mounting on Linux Mint 22.x?

Probably a highly specific issue, but in a hardware with one physical memory for the #LinuxMint system, two for miscellaneous data physically attached to the motherboard and auto-mounted through Disks, and ten or so data USB devices attached most through an USB hub, some times at boot one of the media devices attached to the motherboard isn't auto-mounted, EFI taking its place as the auto-mounted folder.

Also, way more rarely, some times one of the USB devices at the USB hub isn't recognized even by KDE's Dolphin, which lists mounted and mountable devices, despite the hub showing no issues otherwise.

Checking during a session just now where EFI hijacked one of the mount folders, every single device was properly configured, including the one that should be mounted but wasn't.

With Linux Mint 21.2 Xfce, which I used for years before going to 22.2 Cinnamon and now 22.3 Xfce (always clean installs), there were no issues with mounting even with the exact same hardware combination. Meanwhile both 22.x systems I tried had this issue, though seemingly a bit less frequent in Xfce.

Asking some LLM after digging through forums without luck, it claimed that the issue could be a combination of the update of several drivers and kernel changing how the system handles mount logic, identification timing, etc., suggesting I mount through UUID identification instead. But hardware not being my forte, even if I have some notion of what UUIDs are, I'm extra suspicious of such a response.

So back to the question, are there known issues with Mint's handling of auto-mounting? And furthermore, how could the issue be mitigated or even avoided completely?

Thanks in advance!

Linux Mint datahoarding/backup tip: "apt download" fetches the .deb files of both the package and its dependencies

#linuxmint #datahoarding

E.g.:

  • apt download vlc
  • apt download dolphin

Only problems are it requires sudo, it only works with one package at a time (so apt download vlc dolphin won't work), and the script that comes with it for easy installation runs apt (but replacing apt for dpkg -i solves that).

There's also apt-get download, which doesn't require sudo nor comes with a .sh file expecting apt, but it won't download dependencies either.

Hope it helps someone. =)

My friend is not Linux techsavvy. He has tried for about a week to get it working on Linux Mint, with no success. Instead, broke his system a couple times trying to get it working.

Is there an easier way to get it running? Would running it using Wine, or is there some kind of Flatpak or AppImage type thing to make it easier?
