It was around €70, I can write off the cleaning so it's not that big a deal. I'm a clumsy one so I'd be a little nervous about cracking it open myself. As for crashes, I have run some heavy renders in DAZ and no troubles. Thanks so much for your help!

Yeah it does get quite hot and I live in a dry dusty climate with cats, A cleaning is something I think it needs regardless. I actually got the suggestion elsewhere for disk health and using smartctl I got this but I had just turned it on to perform the test:

Only because I had ALOT of trouble editing fstab recently, I want to confirm if I am using the GUI instead of terminal that I right click the grub file, open as root, and add the line at the end and save correct? And then I assume I reboot, or is there a terminal command that refreshes? Just want to be clear as I get nervous with this kind of thing.

The only thing I was doing previously was trying to set up a jellyfin server at the time (storage is on an external HD) I have moved Jellyfin to another laptop. I have had Mint installed for most of the year and it has been excellent with a few tiny bluetooth issues that I just live with.

This was the screen when the troubles started.

I have only gotten this screen the one time. While I was desperately trying to get a back up saved, the laptop kept shutting down during the heavy data transfer with a black screen and this message:

    [ 6.169528] amdgpu 0000:05:00.0: [drn] ERROR dc_dmub_srv_log_diagnostic_dat a: DMCUB error - collecting diagnostic data_`

I ended up having to reboot with the power button, and finally got a backup.tar sorted out, and actually have been using it lightly, but I will have to be using it for some graphics heavy work in the coming week, so I was hoping to get into some fixin' before then.

    Thanks for having a look.

I had a kernel panic and am trying to find some beginner level help for that and possibly updating BIOS to help fix it. Linux Forums, while trying to be helpful are assuming I know anything and I'm just getting in way over my head. Suggestions are either so complicated and vague I can't follow them, or merely saying why those suggestions won't work. It takes me hours of research to try and understand how to make every command work. I'm feeling desperate and freaked out my work laptop is going to break. I could just be flipping out over nothing but I don't understand what is going on.

    I have a Legion Pro 5 16ARX8 - Type 82WM Running Linux mint.

Here's an example of errors messages I'm getting in dmesg:

    [ 6.035147] amdgpu 0000:05:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* dc_dmub_srv_log_diagnostic_data: DMCUB error - collecting diagnostic data [ 10.042930] amdgpu 0000:05:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* dc_dmub_srv_log_diagnostic_data: DMCUB error - collecting diagnostic data [ 0.276297] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol [\_SB.PCI0.PB2], AE_NOT_FOUND (20251212/dswload2-162) [ 0.276304] ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, During name lookup/catalog (20251212/psobject-220)

    Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: Got the laptop cleaned and got 4 passes on memtest. The tech said, the 3 years of cat hair and dust was likely the culprit in the Kernel panic during a large file copy paste. I will be getting it professionally cleaned regularly and will learn how to copy/paste 400 gb of data more responsibly in the future. Thankyou everyone who lent a hand, you helped during a very stressful few days.

After reading it, I felt I had read and understood something important that remained with me. Not a difficult or long book, enjoyable and interesting.

I'm actually happier rolling back to older tech options and sticking with open source apps and OS's.

My car has no computer, I go talk to humans at banks, I avoid large companies. No AI, I vet everything I utilize for privacy, My brain is at peace.

    Model: LENOVO 82WM Legion Pro 5 LENOVO_MT_82WM_BU_idea_FM_Legion Pro 5

Hello! I think there's a fan issue with my laptop, Yesterday, while not running any program, the laptop was just " on", it started making this very soft sound, it doesn't seem to get any worse when I'm running anything heavy. Almost like a cat purr, I've had the laptop for years and this is certainly a new sound. Here's a 10 second video of it, you have to turn your volume way up to hear it (not a prank I promise you) https://drive.proton.me/urls/36SJE4WA6M#mq36NBG8two5

Do I crack it open and take a look, or leave it to a pro? I'm ok with the software side, but not hardware.

This laptop was my first experiment into installing linux, I have since expanded to installing linux OS to all my devices. Since then, I now would like to circle back to this very slow, very old PC and install a light weight distro on it. It would act like a back up for writing emails and using Obsidian for putting together client info sheets if my main PC ever had an issue. I would only need to install Waterfox and Obsidian.

But I had a curiosity about SNES emulators? What if I could use this lil guy to play old super mario? Is there an emulator for that and will this junk be able to run it? Which distro would be ideal for this, if at all possible? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

UPDATE: Well, during another project I accidentally erased the partition on my HD for this Laptop and messed it all up (OMG lesson to new users, be patient and mindful!!) So I went ahead and put Xfce on it. It's good for what I need, and definitely faster!! It's missing some creature comforts that Cinnamon has, such as the ability to uninstall native apps with a right-click and some UI things that are nice but not necessary.

    next step, the Emulator...

I am so close to completely being degoogled, the last nail in the coffin is my tv.

I have a very old Sony Bravia (over 20 years old), it has a Firestick to get access to Plex and Smarttube, these are the only apps I use. I also have a Mycloud server for Plex.

I have heard you can stream through Raspberry Pi, but am an absolute beginner in this area and don't even know where to start.

    • Which Pi do I get?
    • Can I get Plex and SmartTubeNext on it?
    • How do I set it up?

I just need a start point, guide, tutorial, anything to get this last little bit of privacy interfering tech out of my life.

    Thanks!

UPDATE 1: Right after posting this, got my mitts on a used RP4 for a handful of change (even got the micro HDMI thrown in for free), and after anxiously waiting til I had some time to research and do it, I installed Lineage OS on the lil guy to do an Android TV thing (via Konstakangs build.)

However, while I had success getting the OS on there, after many dumb little issues that I caused through ignorance or accident, the guides I followed for installation all focus on putting Google apps on there. This is the guide I used the most.

Now I am a little stuck on my next step. The only apps I have on the box are settings and a file manager.

How can I get, say, the Aurora app store or AFTVnews downloader on the device? I use lineage on my phone and tablet and that's easy as they have browsers and I can alternately do it through ADB on my Laptop.

One can get the APKs for these, but I have no idea how to apply them to the Raspberry Pi.

Other future issues are, a usable remote (I have an old amazon firestick remote) and the screen is a little cut off at the edges, my tv is so old it doesn't have any overscan options in settings. Plugging the laptop into an HDMI to the TV does this also. Didn't do that when I used Windows so that's a tomorrow problem I guess.

    UPDATE 2:

Well, that was easier than I thought! Turns out ADB can connect to your pi via the simple method of finding the IP address of your Android TV (Settings - System - Network) Then on your PC in the terminal, run adb connect And you can install your APKs from there. This guide has all the details.

I have an donated Gen 1 Pixel phone so that I can experiment trying a new OS on it. I use linux mint on my laptop but still consider myself a beginner. The goal is to eventually do this to my main phone (A galaxy S8) but I wanted to get a feel for how to do it. I'm stuck on the OS, I only use the phone as a clock, texting, and occasionally a call. Internet isn't a huge deal but it'd be nice in a pinch. I'm looking for an OS that's easy to use, privacy & security. Any recommends/guides?
