I did manage to see some of the gambling ads a few years ago, but I guess I figured they'd eventually maybe try a patreon model to fund itself or something, just never anticipated it would be shut down, as it was such a pillar for so long.

Looks like XTC Abandonware is still up, but worryingly they also seem to have gone down the path of gambling ads, listing them as affiliates and having a huge space dedicated to them in the testimonials section on the front page... Ech.

Home of the underdogs is still up too, and it looks like they went the Patreon route, thankfully! Though last update was 3 years ago.

Overall the abandonware space seems to be a bit of a shadow of its former self, unfortunately :(

Yeah, was an active contributer there and even had some discussions with the main admin Tom Henrick. Part of my childhood is just gone

Apparently it's been dead longer than actually it's posted death as it was sold and gambling ads were rampant shortly before the actual demise

Judged solely as a shooter, Wolfenstein 3D feels particularly outdated compared to modern examples of the genre

oh no. 35 years old videogame is outdated? who would have guessed... i don't really see the point of the article.

This is cool. I will never use this since I'm lucky enough to have dedicated hardware for 9x. But the thought of having a massively overpowered machine for DOS gaming amuses me.

I only noticed in the comments after posting this that the new release of FreeDOS doesn't actually have the newer kernel they'd been working on (it was released in the master branch a couple days before the video was released), so the test unfortunately doesn't show anything new compared to the previous version since it's using the same Kernel as 1.3. Hopefully the newer kernel addresses some of those remaining issues :)
