Piefed has a flair feature. Lemmy does not. I guess that's where it comes from.

Also, I understand LLMs are not popular here. I am just creating things I want to use that don't exist yet. Everybody is free to use them as they see fit. All my projects are actively being maintained and updated when necessary.

I've been working on this (Fedigest) for months and thought it was complete and finished enough for a public release. Also I am happy how it worked out, and plan on running a website powered by this software in the future.

If anyone feels the LLM part of the design is a deal breaker, feel free to ignore. I did not make this for anyone except myself, but I've decided to publicly release it for people who might also be interested.

    Made a thing. Fedigest is a self-hosted site where you pick posts from anywhere in the threadiverse, write a few lines about why they're worth reading, and publish them as one front page.

    Comments are pulled live from the original thread. Want to vote or reply? Enter your home instance once, it gets saved in your browser, and from then on every post takes you straight to the same post on your own instance. It can also follow communities and add new posts automatically.

    Comes with 15 themes (light/dark pairs follow your device, and there's a terminal one with an old PC font), and you can make your own with a live preview.

    Runs as one Docker container, SQLite inside. Still early, version 0.1.3. Built with help from an LLM.

    Demo: https://demo.fedigest.org
    Code: https://github.com/DaDosDude/Fedigest

    Feedback welcome.

    That's pretty much what the frontend does. And the piefed topics and feeds are the forums. It works surprisingly smooth, and I've actually been using it on and off for a week

    Edit: I now understand what you meant. Sort by new only sorts by post date. You can sort by active, but this excludes posts that have no comment. So for every "forum" (community) the software will have to do 2 api calls, and sort them accordingly. Sort new and active and combine those 2.

    To prevent rate-limit I will only do the double api calls for the first page. Anything after will be sorted by new, to make sure the topics without comments still get potential views.

  • PieBB - A PhpBB inspired frontend for piefed Threadiverse UI & Feature (forum.retrofed.com)

    cross-posted from: https://retrofed.com/c/meta@retrofed.com/p/2373766/retrofed-forum-powered-by-piebb

    Hi,

    After getting forum.retrolemmy.com running with lemmyBB, I wondered if Retrofed could get something similar. Instead of getting lemmyBB (an ancient software for lemmy) to work through a proxy, we created a new frontend made natively for PieFed: PieBB. PieBB is more feature complete than lemmyBB and lighter on the server.

    Note: This project was created with the help of an LLM.

    It's live at forum.retrofed.com, and makes PieFed look and work like an old phpBB2 forum. You log in with your normal Retrofed account. Posting, voting, polls, PMs, notifications and moderation all work, and you can even import (some) old phpBB2 themes.

    If you notice any bugs, you can message me, or reply here.

    If you want to use it yourself, it's at Github. Tested on PieFed 1.8.x.

    Known limitations:

    • Register sends you to Retrofed's own sign-up page.
    • The index (Last Post, counts) can be a few minutes behind, to keep API calls down.
    • Votes made on Retrofed itself can take up to 10 minutes to show in PieBB, due to a cache in PieFed.

    In case anyone is wonder why progress on the emulator appears slow or feature requests feel ignored, we are currently still understaffed and have, in addition to new bugs reported every day that have to be fixed, a backlog of items on our internal TODO list such as:

    • EISA;
    • Turbo Button for XT PCs;
    • Emulation of the ESS Solo-1;
    • PD (Phase-change Dual) and DVD-RAM support;
    • IBM Expanded Memory Adapter (XMA);
    • Passthrough of real CD/DVD drives to the emulator on macOS;
    • Support for cloneCD and TOC CD-ROM image files;
    • Mitsumi CD-ROM emulation (it would also allow eventual emulation of the Tandy VIS).

    In addition, we are currently in severe need of developers and/or maintainers for the following:

    • New dynamic recompiler;
    • macOS support;
    • Emulation of the NEC PC-98 family of computers;
    • A potential built-in non-GDBSTUB debugger to replace the current GDBSTUB implementation;
    • Our SDL backend;
    • The ImGui OSD;
    • The Qt UI.

    We would also appreciate anyone who could help the fixing of issues that get reported to our GitHub or in our Discord server.

    RetroFed - A new retro inspired piefed instance News & Update Threadiverse Instance Info (retrofed.com)

    After hosting RetroLemmy.com for close to 3 years, we are proud to announce we now have also opened up a PieFed instance called Retrofed.

    This is not meant to replace RetroLemmy, but instead give retro-minded people a choice.

    Also, Retrofed is available and fully functional on http as well as https. Meaning old hardware should be able to connect and interact with retrofed if people so wish.

    Your home away from modern life.

    Welcome to the nostalgia-filled piefed instance of yesteryear.
