It might actually be a small flower by artichoke standards; I was hoping to eat it but it was too small to bother with so I let it bloom.

That's truly a massive flower. I've eaten plenty of artichokes, but seeing one in bloom with something for scale is impressive.

I let this thistle grow every year and dead head it carefully before the blooms go to seed so the bees can enjoy it but I don’t get an entire yard full of Italian thistle.
