samba shares are windows shares, on linux. any os, mobile and desktop, can either access them directly or got a light-weight client for doing so.

you set up one or multiple shares on your server, like one is "family" and other is "steve" and you can define what each user can do to them - just browse, or read, or write to, etc

or if you need just a read-only share, any web server (apache, nginx, etc) can allow access to a folder you shared.

what's "family members", are those folks on your LAN? or people on mobile devices or from elsewhere?

if it's the former, samba shares are easy. the latter, any number of solutions listed here, provided you pay extra, extra attention to firewalls and other mitigations, it's hell out there wrt automated bots hammering exposed endpoints.

the Oct 30 one doesn't play them, the 27 one does. also whole lotta fucked up UI glitches, doesn't respect the tv and desktop launch flags, some major changes afoot.

"sindy swindy shouldn't go out with that guy he's all yucky and gross" says CEO of the "sindy should be blowing ME" corp. in answer to a question on whether he'd ever score, he assured the news dolts that he's gonna score, any day now

not to shit on your take, but like if even half of what this cretin says is accurate, that's is pretty fucking far from a pro/contra AI issue.

I don't trust proton for anything of importance and am occasionally using them to register to unimportant stuff and this latest revelation hasn't changed my opinion one iota. if you're depending on them for anything, start looking for alternatives (plural, always) like right now.

shows and movies watched long ago suddenly pop up in continue watching and won't go away; used to be able to toggle watched status and they went away, now they just hang there. had to move entire shows out of the library so I don't see them there no more. tiny annoyances that make me go get a mouse and keyboard as they can't be fixed with just the remote in TV mode. nothing's a showstopper but when you're used to the thing just humming along and not noticining it, it's a drag to constantly have to fix this and that.

    • I'd strongly advise you to stay clear of elementaryOS, at least as a first step. after you figure things out with a more vanilla flavor, feel free to revisit it. there's enough challenges with taming that hardware with vanilla flavors, you don't need additional ones
    • these aren't important messages, if you want to look at what's happening, press "e" on the GRUB menu and remove quiet from the switches edit: those are EFI messages, that's not linux stuff. make sure your USB drive is GPT formatted and after you've flashed it verify there's an efi folder on it. reboot, press and hold Alt until the menu shows.
    • you're booting with Nvidia graphics. those are abject horror in the best of cases, and yours (GT330M) is beyond saving. you should disable it as you'll get nothing but grief and run it on Intel HD graphics only, here's a primer.

I've just submitted an offer for a slew of T480/T490/T14 and some Elitebooks in a "B-class" state; busted screens, malfunctioning keyboards, etc, avg price is in the $30 range. no SSDs, chargers, and save for a coupla T14s with onboard RAM, they're usually without RAM. so once completed, they should be in the $100-$150 range.

I wouldn't dwell too much on the price, whether you can have it for $200 or $300 isn't really significant, it's not like you're doing this twice a year. whatever you get now will last you for many moons, so amortized over that period that's nothing to fret about. make sure the battery/ies are OK as finding a good aftermarket replacement's gonna hurt.

T14 is obv better than T480; yeah the latter's got two batteries, but the former sips way less power while packing more power; also Ryzen options (5000-series and later only). serviceability is similar, huge cross-model/generation parts-compatibility. soldered RAM used to be an issue, but with today's prices, having 16 GB on-board (+ one slot free) can be a welcome addition. def stay away from the X1; the heft difference is insignificant but it drastically limits the upgrades and repairs you can do on your own.

kinda mean you want places but then don't say which place you got

can't help with ps5 places, I get my stuff for ps4 from superpsx

yeah that idiotic rar of a zip of an already compressed pkg is standard on them sites. small price to play to play all the stuff, for free, for ever

edit: forgot to shit on jdownloader, the abomination that shouldn't be let loose on anyone's system. I've had good results with downthemall! for firefox

the biggest is that everything is now encrypted as standard. letsencrypt came after this and allowed everybody to use industry-standard encryption even for trivial stuff, for free.

back then, even google's servers communicated with each other in cleartext. sipping off that pipe allowed the siphoning of all data.

yeah. create a 8gb partition on the new drive, format it as fat32.

copy the ISO's contents (not the ISO, its contents) to the 8gb partition. shut down when done.

optional, disconnect the windows drive so you don't fuck it up.

power on, press whatever the key is for the boot menu for your UEFI. it should list the installer as a boot option. hit that.

final step, equally important. when the GRUB menu appears, press "e" on the menu item and find the linux kernel switches (where it says "quiet splash" etc) and add toram (debian/ubuntu) or rd.live.ram (fedora). this will boot the image to ram. so when you start the installer you can select wipe & use whole disk.

    suerte!

edit: this assumes you're doing it on a EFI/UEFI system, which is any board/laptop after 2012.

didn't see it mentioned here, so a brief YSK.

stefano marinelli is working on #littleFedi, a self-hosted, single-binary activitypub/fediverse peer that hosts a mastodon-like instance with, in my mind, three killer features.

one, the thing can run on your premises completely, no need for paying for a VPS, domain name, nothing, bypasses NAT/CGNAT, encrypted comms to other instances by way of lighthouses that do the initial intros.

dos, the thing runs on something as light as a Pi zero 2W, with a miniscule memory footprint and immense CPU optimizations due to running on the weakest hardware there is (also running off SD storage).

finally, a blog-like view of your long-format tweets/toots/posts, naturally with replies appearing as comments.

original post introing the thing: https://littleone.littlefedi.social/@stefano/4252ae6f-b949-42f8-a021-fd2b698f8b37

no code available atm (coming soon) same goes for binaries. the first instance is at https://littleone.littlefedi.social/ if you want an invite code to check things out (the settings page's got a lot of cool stuff), hit up stefano.

I am beyond stoked, this clears the two biggest hurdles for selfhosting your shit - the VPS/domain expense and hassle, and the hardware requirements for running it.

edit: missed that the website is up, explaining everything way better: https://littlefedi.org/

in its first iteration, it strips all AI shit, doesn't just disable it; the hero went through the source tree and patched it by hand!

it differs from LibreWolf and friends as there's an intention to hard-fork the thing (LW should be based on basebrowser) and let the abomination that is the mozilla shell-game-corp of today behind, thus returning to the original idea behind creating mozilla, best described by the dude who gave us the thing:

In my humble but correct opinion, Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:

    1. Building THE reference implementation web browser, and
    2. Being a jugular-snapping attack dog on standards committees.
    3. There is no 3.

    mastodon thread: https://mastodon.social/@sarahjamielewis/116994970688711387

    the patch repo: https://codeberg.org/basebrowserproject/organization

    firefox repo: https://github.com/mozilla-firefox/firefox

    build instructions: https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/contributing/contribution_quickref.html

the only thing missing's how to apply the patch. it's as simple as going to the firefox source folder and applying the patch file with:

    patch -p1 < the.patch

and then proceed with ./mach build.

this was my first time building firefox from source and it wasn't half as bad; about 30ish minutes on an i7-870 in the background without any excessive load that woulda made the system unusable.

In case you were one of the lucky ones able to snag a free account in the olden days, the terms have changed. Instead of 4 CPU and 24 RAM that you were free to whack up amongst 1-4 VPS, now you got 2 CPU and 12 GB RAM, so either one dual-core VPS or two single-core. If you keep using the old setup beyond a certain date (can't be bothered to look up when that is) you'll get billed; at reasonable rates, I'm sure.

If I'm reading this correctly, the block volume storage allotment hasn't changed, but their whole setup is hella confusing, so might be off on that.

Was really a matter of days when they was gonna axe the thing, they fired half a planet's worth of workers, I'm amazed they left even this much.

edit: I'm behind the times, this was reported more than a month ago: https://linuxiac.com/oracle-quietly-cuts-free-tier-ampere-a1-resources-in-half/

was away from django development for close to a decade, decided to jump in for a smallish project. don't wanna use my preferred IDE from way back when (pycharm) and am trying to use vscodium.

with the standard python and django extensions, the autocompletion/suggestion is... uh, lacking. what else do I need? a search in the marketplace nets tons of suggestions, don't know which are superfluous, overlapping, deprecated...

hated on the thing since I first spotted it and dismissed it, never to think about it again - doing everything wrong and then adding the shittiest of solutions, who's gonna fall for that, right? but that thing is gaining and this post and recent threads just make me irrationally angry.

oh, the thing is also vibecoded. if you had any reservations about letting this idiocy loose on your data, there's a relief, huh? head bozo detects ever-so-subtle AGI whilst slop-fondling and easily "verifies" 30K LoC that was shat out. stomach-churning shit.

not to mention, said bozo is doubling down on his fash idiocies. I wish I was making half of this up.
