samba shares are windows shares, on linux. any os, mobile and desktop, can either access them directly or got a light-weight client for doing so.

you set up one or multiple shares on your server, like one is "family" and other is "steve" and you can define what each user can do to them - just browse, or read, or write to, etc

or if you need just a read-only share, any web server (apache, nginx, etc) can allow access to a folder you shared.

what's "family members", are those folks on your LAN? or people on mobile devices or from elsewhere?

if it's the former, samba shares are easy. the latter, any number of solutions listed here, provided you pay extra, extra attention to firewalls and other mitigations, it's hell out there wrt automated bots hammering exposed endpoints.

"sindy swindy shouldn't go out with that guy he's all yucky and gross" says CEO of the "sindy should be blowing ME" corp. in answer to a question on whether he'd ever score, he assured the news dolts that he's gonna score, any day now

not to shit on your take, but like if even half of what this cretin says is accurate, that's is pretty fucking far from a pro/contra AI issue.

I don't trust proton for anything of importance and am occasionally using them to register to unimportant stuff and this latest revelation hasn't changed my opinion one iota. if you're depending on them for anything, start looking for alternatives (plural, always) like right now.

shows and movies watched long ago suddenly pop up in continue watching and won't go away; used to be able to toggle watched status and they went away, now they just hang there. had to move entire shows out of the library so I don't see them there no more. tiny annoyances that make me go get a mouse and keyboard as they can't be fixed with just the remote in TV mode. nothing's a showstopper but when you're used to the thing just humming along and not noticining it, it's a drag to constantly have to fix this and that.

    • I'd strongly advise you to stay clear of elementaryOS, at least as a first step. after you figure things out with a more vanilla flavor, feel free to revisit it. there's enough challenges with taming that hardware with vanilla flavors, you don't need additional ones
    • these aren't important messages, if you want to look at what's happening, press "e" on the GRUB menu and remove quiet from the switches edit: those are EFI messages, that's not linux stuff. make sure your USB drive is GPT formatted and after you've flashed it verify there's an efi folder on it. reboot, press and hold Alt until the menu shows.
    • you're booting with Nvidia graphics. those are abject horror in the best of cases, and yours (GT330M) is beyond saving. you should disable it as you'll get nothing but grief and run it on Intel HD graphics only, here's a primer.

I've just submitted an offer for a slew of T480/T490/T14 and some Elitebooks in a "B-class" state; busted screens, malfunctioning keyboards, etc, avg price is in the $30 range. no SSDs, chargers, and save for a coupla T14s with onboard RAM, they're usually without RAM. so once completed, they should be in the $100-$150 range.

I wouldn't dwell too much on the price, whether you can have it for $200 or $300 isn't really significant, it's not like you're doing this twice a year. whatever you get now will last you for many moons, so amortized over that period that's nothing to fret about. make sure the battery/ies are OK as finding a good aftermarket replacement's gonna hurt.

T14 is obv better than T480; yeah the latter's got two batteries, but the former sips way less power while packing more power; also Ryzen options (5000-series and later only). serviceability is similar, huge cross-model/generation parts-compatibility. soldered RAM used to be an issue, but with today's prices, having 16 GB on-board (+ one slot free) can be a welcome addition. def stay away from the X1; the heft difference is insignificant but it drastically limits the upgrades and repairs you can do on your own.

kinda mean you want places but then don't say which place you got

can't help with ps5 places, I get my stuff for ps4 from superpsx

yeah that idiotic rar of a zip of an already compressed pkg is standard on them sites. small price to play to play all the stuff, for free, for ever

edit: forgot to shit on jdownloader, the abomination that shouldn't be let loose on anyone's system. I've had good results with downthemall! for firefox

the biggest is that everything is now encrypted as standard. letsencrypt came after this and allowed everybody to use industry-standard encryption even for trivial stuff, for free.

back then, even google's servers communicated with each other in cleartext. sipping off that pipe allowed the siphoning of all data.

yeah. create a 8gb partition on the new drive, format it as fat32.

copy the ISO's contents (not the ISO, its contents) to the 8gb partition. shut down when done.

optional, disconnect the windows drive so you don't fuck it up.

power on, press whatever the key is for the boot menu for your UEFI. it should list the installer as a boot option. hit that.

final step, equally important. when the GRUB menu appears, press "e" on the menu item and find the linux kernel switches (where it says "quiet splash" etc) and add toram (debian/ubuntu) or rd.live.ram (fedora). this will boot the image to ram. so when you start the installer you can select wipe & use whole disk.

    suerte!

edit: this assumes you're doing it on a EFI/UEFI system, which is any board/laptop after 2012.

littlefedi is out as of coupla days ago. still in early stage but should cover your use case. local binary, world comms via "lighthouses" don't need domain, vps, etc. there's something strange afoot wrt the author's willingness to be forthcoming about the project's provenance. I'd stay clear for the time being.

go to gsmarena and filter phones by chipset. select something like Snapdragon 845, a widely supported SoC that is at the cross-section of hella old i.e. cheap but also super capable; it's doubtful you'll ever need anything faster than that. then see which of the filtered models you can get for cheap. finally go over to lineageOS and see if it's got current support.

that's a hella rad machine to convert because of something so easily fixable. could be due to a loose cable, or needs a new panel; provided it ain't of the ultra-spensive variety, 2nd hand laptop panels can be had for like $20-50 from your local junker. short of that, converting it to a full desktop would be the next best use case. using a hexacore ryzen with 3050ti as "media PC" is fucking bonkers, a potato can handle that.

when I was running my Oneplus 6T with a heavily degraded battery on pmOS, I got days of standby out of it, while Android couldn't last 12 hours. in both cases I ran it without modem/cell connectivity, just wifi. degoogled android, no microG no nothing. still, no way it could do sunrise to sundown.

on pmOS, when I press the power button, the thing went into standby. didn't do shit in the background nobody asked it to, didn't sync to no clown, nothing. for me that was perfect. your use case might be different.

can you expand on what hardware you're running, namely eGPU box, GPU and laptop/miniPC. did you have cable issues? also, how's the hot dock/undock situation?

you can load any live USB to RAM, if you got enough of it. use rd.live.ram (fedora) or toram (debian/ubuntu) and you can remove the USB afterwards and have a superfast "install"

bluetooth remote controls, I run a NOCTUS. apple IR ones (the little white ones from the iPod days) with IR receiver out of a defunct Macbook (those are USB). game controllers, any kind.

Jellyfin player's UI in TV mode reacts only to up/down/left/right and enter and escape. you can use InputRemapper if your weapon of choice isn't recognized. also, jellyfin android apps connect to the player directly and you can control it from there.
