I found it as one of the recommended game tiles at the bottom of another game's store page and was baffled at the pictures. The game markets itself on its quirky designs, but shines with its compelling character writing and heartful story. It's a unique story format since you learn about the characters through how they build their web pages and interact with each other. The story is the kind that occupies your mind for a long while after you've completed the game.

I unfortunately missed out on Next Fest this time, so I appreciate the article. In the past few years, a hefty portion of the games I play have been Next Fest discoveries. Although these games you covered look good, they don't appeal to me enough to wishlist them.

The user interface of Ablahshikar feels very intimidating.

I think the PS1 graphics style has settled as the pixel art of 3D. It has a very distinctive look that isn't typical of other low-fidelity 3D graphics, like an N64 game or an old PC 3D game like Deus Ex. A modern game using those other styles for the retroness might (I believe) at first glance come across as just looking crappy.

My understanding from the outside is that it's for political and social legitimacy. The party formed from the student protests and chose people for their list in student meetings at a bunch of universities. The point of listing no students is to show that their demands have support outside the student body. For the same reason, they don't list anyone who has had a career in politics.

I like ambient music without vocals for when I'm working, since I find hearing words distracting. You might like these if you like Tycho.

    • 2 Mello has a range of albums that are chill hip-hop, like Sunsound Collisions and midnight broadcasts vol. 1
    • QUADRATA by Oyster is Boards of Canada-inspired downtempo
    • Interstitial Geometry by Insectoid Intelligence is some ambient electronic roughly in the dark and drone corners of the genre
    • Kitten Burst by Jam2go is the soundtrack for the game Kitten Burst, also by Jam2go. It's split into five albums. The set as a whole is a wide-ranging tour of Y2K-era electronic music, from liquid drum & bass to eurodance to house.
    • From nobonoko, there's Music For Animal Cafés, which has a warm and cheery sound to match its name, and Television, which is more minimal electronic
    • Floating Points makes chill house music that's kind of hypnotic, like Someone Close and Nuits Sonores

If you like Old Giant, check out MASTER BOOT RECORD's albums, like INTERRUPT REQUEST. It's prog metal that incorporates old PC sound chips.

And for some totally weird stuff:

    • Oscilloscope Music by Jerobeam Fenderson is music designed to produce animations when shown on an oscilloscope. Here's a video of one of the tracks! The album feels like it's poking your brain when you listen with headphones.
    • van by clown core is… something. Grindcore with sudden switches to jazz and screaming.
