Okay, maybe I put the cart before the horse with my reply. Sorry.

Still, asking someone's phone number for no discernible reason, and then asking them their name when they least expect it may raise an alarm. See my other comments.

I have to regularly help my aging mother (and sometimes neighbors) with their phones. The damn thing of every manufacturer having their own Android version(s)/skin(s), and UI/UX designers changing the layout every new version of an app, makes me want to violently slap their collective faces with a large trout

Just bought a 2m section of flexible tube for a gas stove, and the sales clerk asked first for my phone number, to which I replied "I don't have one". Then she asked me for my name, to which I replied "I'll pay in cash". She then insisted it was so "the cashier will call you by name", to which I replied "I'm not giving you my name, I'll pay in cash". [Edit: she apparently got a bit upset when I refused to give info, but ended up entering "no name" according to the receipt]

Am I wrong for not wanting to give personal data for an item paid in cash, in person? No other hardware store ever asks me for my personal info.

A few months ago, we were at a supermarket with my mom, buying some stuff.

My mom needed an antiperspirant. When she was about to grab a black one, I heard a guy "helpfully" telling her that she was grabbing one "For Men™", that the ones "For Women™" were the pink ones.

I immediately looked at the guy like "lol what, who asked".

(My mom uses "men's" antiperspirants because she doesn't care about that, and they are usually cheaper than "women's")

Women get to smell like real things (vanilla, lavender) but men have to smell like concepts. What the fuck is "cool sport rush"?
