Remove them. There could be another community for slop.
lmao, honestly from what i've seen lemmy is very much pro slop -- and it's been quite disheartening. i've mostly just stayed on mastodon lately cause i don't have the bandwidth to fight with people who say "but local models!" ... nah fuck that. LLM's are a racist, fascist, anti-human, anti-social, anti-intellectual, regressive, inefficient, ecoterrorist, counter-revolutionary, class traitor technology. Even with open weights / open models ran locally, it still only reduces peoples capacity to learn, create and build community. It still pushes us as a society apart. There are technologies that can be up lifting and constructive, but this isn't one. There is no reason to chase more lines of code, or more pages in a book -- instead chasing to better understand, better communicate, better organize together. Every "leftist" person on lemmy who is pro local llm's, is just excited about the technology and that leaves very little room for organizing and utilizing this unique time where there could be a non-partisan reason to organize against the oligarchs and fascists who are in power in much of the world right now.
I dabbled with AI usage for a while, ran some local models, would try whatever was the current best for when there was a project that I didn't really want to put the effort into learning about--and I found it was just always regressive and annoying. I'd brick hardware, or my context would get so big that the output would continue to become more sloppy. I started just going back to reading documentation, and it was just always easier. It was always easier to just grep for whatever I needed. Whenever I'd go back to simply trying to understand the problem and just fucking read, I'd feel almost like a haze being lifted. I think this is the point where I realized, most complaints that people have with software etc are already solved issues that most "tech" refuses to implement or has enshitified. So instead of just solving the problem in a predictive / deterministic way, we are instead being sold a technology that will burn incredible amounts of fuel, will requires incredible amounts of resources all to what--search through my email? More slowly than what was developed in the 70's would. Then I read 'Blood in the machine' and 'End times fascism', watched 'ghost in the machine' and read more most and articles... The sheer mass amount of violence and suffering created is unimaginable.
I think my stance is mostly, even without the ethical issues -- what use would this technology even have? Why would I want a computer to do the learning and creating, when I could instead enjoy the work of my friends, and enjoy creating something for others; while building a community. and community is the #1 way to curb fascism. also my computing is more and more evolving into something more similar to permacomputing. My music and art taste has always been more into finding & connecting with artists locally, or at least artists who I can actually interact with and understand. Outsourcing these things to a machine would not bring any joy.
lmao here
One thing I find interesting is under "Modern Use" on wikipedia it says:
On January 6 2025, Elon Musk sent a post on X (formerly Twitter) containing the slur. The Montclair State University published a study pointing to a 207.5% increase in posts on the site containing the word r***rd following Musk's post.[12]
In May 2025, CNN noted that the word was "surging in popularity online among some celebrities and their fans," and quoted Joe Rogan as saying, "The word ‘r****ded’ is back, and it's one of the great culture victories."[13]
As if I didn't already think that this was a fascist dog whistle... seems like there is actual evidence to back up that while fascism is on the rise, the use of that word is also on the rise. I've probably watched / read some shit on this already, and just forgot lol
chimera-linux https://chimera-linux.org/community/#project-ai-policy
Chimera has a strong no-AI policy for contributions in all of its repositories. Contributors found using LLMs will be barred from further contributing to the project.
We take objection against the use of LLMs primarily on ethical grounds. This is based on many factors, including societal impact of LLM use, ecological impact, and others. We reject arguments about “useful tools” and similar, because technical aspects can never be considered in isolation.
LLM-using contributions additionally have a disproportionate burden on reviewers, their mental health, as well as project resources, which we have limited amounts of.
Chimera is a small project and has limited control over what upstreams do, particularly due to dependencies and widespread use of LLM usage in projects nowadays. We try to do the right thing when possible, preferring appropriate alternatives and so on.
also if you listen to 10 seconds of any podcast with him you'll hear him say the r slur like 20 times. when I first heard about him two or so years ago, this was my first red flag. I immediately paused and checked his blog... yep fucking nazi piece of shit
I've been using Chimera linux recently (coming from Arch), and APK v3 is so good. It is so fucking fast and it's dependency management is next level. Also the world file is really cool. Pacman felt more powerful in some ways, but a bit slower and more cumbersome. I also have had it just remove dependencies that another package still needs, and optional dependencies aren't handled as cleanly.
as someone who has been using t9 phones for the last 3-4 years, the tough part is will the software and keys even be good on this. you just don't know till you use it. It's true, having an underpowered phone sucks ( I'm using the Sonim X320 now which I believe has 4GB of ram, and it's soooo nice compared to the Cat S22 Flip ). But a lot of issues on my previous phones (prev mentioned Cat, then the Qin F25) was mostly the software not working well with buttons or the screen size. The sonim I have now works well because the stock apps a designed for the hard ware. $450 or whatever is still too much, but if it covers all the bands and use usable, at least it's an option.
i am using KWM with river. I really like KWM, but I am tired with how rapidly the config is changing and needs to be updated to compile KWM updates. I'm thinking of switching to ZRWM since using CLI commands to config seem more stable than writing source code that needs to compile. The only thing I'm not sure about with ZRWM is I use monocle and deck layouts the most with KWM--and I'm not sure if ZRWM supports monocle.
If I don't get to a comfy place where my WM just exists and doesn't need to be updated, I may move to DWL.
I've used sway, hyprland, dwm, niri, mangowc, river-classic and now river with KWM. I'd say dwm and KWM are my favorite, but river-classic was up there (I just didn't have enough layouts set up).
it was honestly super cool of them for proprietary software. it was funny cause it was just a drop box link, and they said "please don't share with anyone". even though i wish it was foss software, and i would move off it ASAP if there was a good foss option for my use case--they still get a 1+ for just sending me the APK that i purchased that isn't tied to google services, and can be updated or not updated in app.
this is absolutely insane, thank you for sharing lmao
because i use a "dumb phone" (non-touch android flip phone, Sonim XP3 Plus 5G (X320)) my apps reflect that need a bit more.
- TT9 invaluable app for T9 android phones, it works so so much better than the stock keyboard.
- SimpleEmail this was the only email client that i could find that could work without a touchscreen. So far I've been reeeaally happy with it--it's so nice to have a solid email client again.
- DSub2000 subsonic/navidrome client that "mostly" works without a touchscreen. it's not perfect, but for my use case it is usable when i don't want to pull out my MP3 player.
- Localsend OS agnostic "air drop", must have
- KDE connect Works really well on the Sonim for SMS, notifications etc (I had more issues previously when running older versions of Android on "dumb" devices)
- DAVx5 Contact and Calendar sync, works so well with fastmail (or self hosted options); this is a life saver for me so that i can use the built in contacts/calendar for my non-touch device.
- Delta Chat works surprisingly without touch. it's hard to get people to switch off text or signal. But because my phone doesn't support RCS, and signal is pretty mid (but still usable) without touch, delta chat has worked good for me.
- Privacy Friendly QR Scanner works perfectly without a touchscreen, and has been invaluable on devices that do not come with a touch screen.
These are a couple apps that are not on fdroid, but work really well on my device if anyone is curious:
- BIG Launcher Expensive AF, but I was able to purchase the launcher on my pixel (that runs grapheneOS), then send them an email saying it doesn't work on my Sonim X320 because it doesn't have google play services--they sent me an APK of the full version that does not need google play services. This is one of the few launchers that works on non-touch devices, and it's actually really good. The default launcher on the Sonim bugs out and does not show apps that are not pre-installed.
- PodLP is a podcast app that is specifically made with non-touch/feature phones in mind. The developer did some AI assisted work to reverse engineer the API's for the softkeys on phones like the sonim. While I don't like AI, and try to use software that is free of slop--this is really cool work that I haven't seen in any other applications. The developer just recently put out the apk on android it seems like maybe it will come to f-droid or something.
- MATVT Is the virtual mouse that I am using to get around not having a touch screen when needed. But TBH the scrolling is jank and only works on some apps... If anyone has another options or tips, I'd love to try anything else at this point.
i've been using arch as my daily driver for 4 years. but i am thinking of switching to chimera linux. i really like apk, i think using dinit, llvm, musl and *bsd core utils would be great. for server, i use proxmox as my hypervisor, and debian for most vm's, starting to use alpine on lxc. I am using openwrt on my router.
