Working as a dev, I have the same experience. The few times I've tried to bring Linux up as a viable option to the OS we're all forced to use at work, and most of us hate using (Win11), there's little to no interest. There's a few Mac users on my team, but that's about it. I think it's that the majority of folks, even if they're working in tech, simply don't have enough of a reason to try something unfamiliar, which might cause them new and unknown problems, or require them to rethink how they use computes, on their own machines. Even though I'm pretty sure that most would prefer it, given some time.
Thanks for the tip, I might get one of those :)
It is possible to put it in a VLAN that is unable to talk to the internet. This is fine, but I wish I could just get a TV that doesn't have this tracking functionality to begin with.
Please tell me where I can get a modern high-res TV that is NOT smart. I have tried but cannot find them anywhere
While I agree that most websites ship way too much js, there are many possible use cases which aren't just to facilitate tracking and data collection. Some legit uses could be animations which cannot be achieved easily with just CSS, or the ability to update data asynchronously without reloading the page.
Which ones are you thinking of? Out of the options I am aware of, Signal seems to be the most secure, most reliable, and most privacy respecting messaging app in this category.
The anxiety of gift giving is real. All my family have their birthdays from September through December. That + Christmas always leaves me more stressed out and poorer than necessary. I never know what to get. I would prefer to just not give each other gifts at all.
Use AI for what purpose, to what extent, and with which mindset? I think you'll be hard pressed to find dev organizations today that don't at all use AI tools to some degree. There's a difference between pushing vibecoded slop that no one understands (including the developer that prompted it), and using LLMs as productivity tools in a responsible way, with sufficient oversight.
Their AI stance? What is that about?
I'm a bit torn. EU is really going hard on these regulations. It's very convenient to have a single type of port that just works with all devices, sure, but legislating this for laptops may be overkill. There may be good reasons for other types of charging ports on laptops. Granted I'm not very knowledgeable about this particular topic so I'm not sure what the costs and benefits to different charging ports are, but somehow I also doubt that a lot of these regulators are.
Same. I don't know why, but it just annoys me.
Imagine being this arrogant
